Three normally aspirated Mopars all on the same day. I think Darren had more money in his cylinder heads than I had in my entire engine.......maybe my whole car.

Many photos out there of Kalitta and Prudhomme with 427 SOHC. A BBC won a national event once. They just showed this photo of Kalitta with a Boss 429 on TV.

Not mentioned, because it was 1964 hemi and 1966 440, so two years is closer.

In the videos it is the green '72 Demon with the orange '70 Duster front. Johnny Hunkins once gave it the 'Joe Dirt Award' for the ugliest car at Mopars at The Strip. It still looks exactly the same today. It's parked out in the yard with no engine or trans. I built it while recovering from cancer surgery. 4-link with NHRA certified cage.

While at Summit Racing Sparks, NV we qualified for the DynoMax Power to the Wheels finals. A guy there said, "When I first saw your car from a distance I though it was a POS. Then I went over and looked at it. You built a really nice car!"

Just for discussion, I remember a time when the NHRA A/stock automatic record holder -a 70 Hemi Cuda had a slower time than the B/stock automatic record holder -a 70 440+6 Challenger

The good; Hemi heads flow well even stock. 5/16" valve stems, 2x4 intake so plenty of carb. Biggest cam of any 2nd gen Mopar motor. Strong rods. 440 Wedge; cheap, more cubes, 6pak has plenty of carb. The bad; Hemi pistons are heavy even in aftermarket form. Valve train is heavy. Cost of aftermarket valve train. 440 Wedge; block suspect over 700hp.Stock pistons have the highest compression distance in the market. (However this bodes well when you add stroke. Plenty of room) Stock pistons heavy. Shortest valve length of any American V8. Now in aftermarket form to the 700-950hp level. There isnt much difference. Hemi will cost more. Have to be careful with internal weight because they will keep making power well north of 7000rpm. All out power. Aftermarket Hemi is king.

dvw, excellent points on the internals! I don’t see how a 440-6 could beat a well tuned Hemi, both with competent drivers. The 440-6 used the same heads as the 4bbl, flowed around 230 cfm I believe, not good for that many cubes.

Yeah I'm sure it happened more than once. You know racers "tweak" a little sometimes. I think just on the dyno it looks like a mismatch, but real world sometimes things are a little different. Everything I've read about head to head was the same as mentioned here, the 440 jumped out and then the Hemi rolled by. With the differance in torque I can't see the Hemi losing 5 out of 10 attempts. IMHO ..I'll take either and not complain.
