Wish I was to the point you are on yours. I'm shooting for next summer on this one.

Since we are taking a break from the body, I decided to take care of the dash. I sent the 5 piece set to Vacuum Orna-Metal Co. about 10 days ago and received them back today. The pictures don't do them justice - they turned out very nice. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their services to others. Very friendly and fast. Thanks Prop for steering me to them. I also sent off my gauge cluster yesterday to Redline Gauge Works. They seem to be a decent business and the owner really knows Mopars. He told me they do all of the cars that Restoration by Julius does. I've used Auto Instruments in the past, but decided to try another company. Redline quoted me $210. less than Auto Inst. for the same services. Should have them back in a couple of weeks.

Those look great, I'm jealous...

No problem H2E......Glad to see they turned out so nice and you're happy with them. :icon_thumright:

They look great. And that seems more than reasonable price for that.

They sure do look great! The gauges will make it look even better, hope they turn out as good for you..

Still a lot of money any way you look at it, but having mine redone was $150. less than buying a set of reproductions. And I will take original parts any day over China repo's.

A whole month without posting any progress. Been busy with work and hauling the kids around since school is out.
I did manage to get a couple of things accomplished though. The interior is scuffed and seam sealer smeared in.

Then I decided to take apart all the dash switches to get them functional. All the rocker switches were no problem - just pop them apart, clean everything up, put dielectric grease on the contacts, and put them back together. But then I got to the dash light dimmer switch. This one is held together with 2 rivets that aren't reproduced. So I drilled them out and found some 8-32 socket head cap screws with a solid shank. I cut these down and made new threads on the shorter one, and tapped out the case for these. The worst part of the switch in my opinion is the way the coil is attached to the contact bar. It is only crimped together for some reason. I'm not sure why the factory would have done this except that maybe the coil is some type of stainless that solder wouldn't stick to. This area was corroded and took awhile to get it cleaned up decent and tightened up to get continuity. Once everything was put back together I should be back in business with the D terminal shorting to the case when it should, and a 0 - 20 ohm reading between I and R as the wheel is turned.

Great work and a nice write up on the switch!

Thanks Prop. I did forget to mention that I put a dab of Loctite on the 2 screws because tightening them down to much will not allow everything to move freely.

I've finally made up my mind and decided to dare to be different and paint the car something other than stock. I think my 2nd choice of black is still a good one, but so many Chargers have been painted this color that they are quite common now. While I like most of the original colors on these cars, I want something that will stand out a little more. I had a test panel of the Dupont Hot Hues Coppersunset sprayed and I am glad I did. I have never seen a car in person that was painted this color - only pictures on the internet. It is lighter than in the pics. I have been looking at online. I am using Martin Senour products so need to stay with the same brand. The panel in the pictures is the Dupont and the 2 chips are what I am down to from M.S. These 2 chips match very close to the pictures I have of the 68 Charger that was posted here a couple of pages back. It is hard to get a decent picture on camera, but here are a few in different lighting. So I am at least getting close to a color decision - a few more restless nights.....
