1969 Charger R/T resurrection

Sweet looking engine there buddy

Forgot to mention that I got my motor hauled home yesterday afternoon. The shop forgot to machine the flywheel for me, and as he was doing that decided that I should have a new ring gear. For some reason the 134 tooth gear is not very common around here and is being shipped from Missouri. So it will be next week before I get that back. Not like I am lacking for things to do on the car anyways, so it isn't holding anything up. I'm trying to decide if I want to take the front end back apart to drop the car over the motor/tranny, or just wrestle it in from the top in 2 pieces.

Concur 747 but gotta be super careful you don't dammage the paint and bodywork .. rad support area is really tricking going in as a unit from the top or out for that matter.

Of course he's got a lift so motor in from top, trans in from bottom would be less risky

Good point Tallhair but I actually had an easier time putting them in together than one at a time as far as staying clear of the car. I think the tranny makes it easier to control and there is no fighting once it's in but going in the bottom would probably be easy too "I wasn't about to tear everything back apart". Good luck

if you got the lift can you put the whole thing together on the k-member and lower the car over the motor and trans. just another option if your capable of doing it. the motor looks awesome.

I did it this way earlier in the build just to check that everything would fit after all the welding we did. I really was easy, but now I have the steering, torsion bars, upper & lower control arms, and k-frame in the car. I did this to make it a roller to get it hauled/moved around. I'm just thinking I will scratch up a bunch of paint taking it all back apart and putting it back together.

oh please dont scratch the paint. take your time how ever you do it. lol

I already sent the bad dizzy back to Mancini so no pics to post. They are having them made by some company here in the States, but I can't remember who but it was not Firecore. It looks just like the factory units, but does not have the provision to adjust the vac advance through the port by the diaphragm. Neither of these units are capable of easily adjusting the advance curve. I am kind of upset about my ignorance on distributers, because if I had known about the Firecore 6 months ago I would have boughten one of those. And the worst part is that for the time and money this current one cost me, it would have been cheaper to buy the Firecore upfront. And I would have been able to easily adjust the advance. I am not sure the current springs are going to be the best in mine as it is not all in until about 3400 rpm.

If it were me I'd throw that dist in the trash and get a Firecore. If there is no provisions to adjust the mechanical advance in the current one it gonna be a real pain in the butt to do any adjusting.
Mine was $165, its only money right? ha ha ha
Motor and car look great! Think you might make it over to Minnesota in June for Mopars in the Park?

Yeah, I am thinking about buying a Firecore. At this point though I will get the car together and running before switching over.
We go to Mopars in the Park every year - great show. Maybe the Firecore guys will be there and I can save on shipping.

I could have swore that the new Mancini kits came with a Firecore. Mancini is a dealer, you could buy from them and pick it up at their tent during the show.

I managed to get a couple of things done this weekend on the car. It's a blast being able to finally put pieces back on the car, but everything takes about 10 times longer than I would estimate. Good thing I don't do this for a living because I would go broke. I managed to get most of the rear trim on, deck lid torsion bars, taillights, wiper motor , pivots, and connecting rods, some 5x7 rear speakers, sound deadener glued on the package tray, and started looking at the master cylinder and pedal assembly.

Progress is moving along great. The car is looking good. The motor looks and appears like it is going to be a Pwr house. As far as installing the motor when I was younger we would drop them in everyday but never thought of putting one in with no damages, kinks, scrapes, dents, tears or any thing else. With that being said your on your own for installation. Good luck.

Looks like you have a good lift system for car i would use your lift system and engine hoist in sync to lower engine into bay thus not having to just using engine hoist just a thought dont know if any one has tried this.

10X longer . . . and look at all the stuff that you got done . . . Great Progress H2E . . . Thanks for the update . . . looks fantastic ! !

Love the way it's all coming together . . . are we down to 900 parts left to get installed yet ? ? ( smile )

. . . and counting . . .

I am chomping at the bit to get back at it!
And I have to say, it doesnt help seeing everyone on here just flying through there resto's!
I should be back at it very soon. (fingers crossed)

I know that feeling well. I look at all the great work coming together here and hunt Your one of the best, Then I go outside to my Coronet and get a little depressed. I want mine to be done too!!!! LOL You guys are such an inspiration.

Man, every time I see more pictures of your car in paint I have to say "holy $h!t that thing is gorgeous!"

Dropping that engine in will definitely be interesting.. mainly the headers are the biggest pain in the @ss, my install would've been damage-free if it weren't for monkeying with the headers and accidentally scratching my shock tower. For what it's worth, here's how I did it:

With the headers hung loose and car on the ground, very carefully dropped the engine in by itself (some really thick blankets might help protect the paint) and got it bolted in place (motor mounts already bolted to engine). Then I jacked up the front end of the car with a buddy jacking up the back end of the engine with the engine hoist, matching how much I lifted so the motor mounts wouldn't get damaged.

Once it was jacked up high enough I slid the transmission and a floorjack under the car, then lifted the tranny onto the floorjack with my friend's help. This is where the headers being loose comes in. Swing them out away from the engine and jack up the transmission with the bellhousing at an angle, and straightening it out as it starts to clear the collectors. Once it's clear just slowly jack up the transmission as you roll it forward (as the trans tunnel allows) and eventually it'll be in place to bolt up the bellhousing and crossmember. (But you'll want to bolt the starter on before it gets too close to the engine)

This way you don't have to screw with shoehorning the engine and transmission in together, probably would make it a little easier to avoid the dreaded paint chips haha if all that made any sense, I hope it helps :icon_thumleft:

Got a little sidetracked from the Charger project but it was for another black Mopar. I traded in my 2012 2500 for a new 2014. Since I use it for work I spent all last night and a part of this morning transferring tools and parts from old to new. A couple of noticeable changes between the 2. They went to a coil rear suspension and touchscreen radio. Wish I could say they improved upon the gas milage, but that didn't happen.

Hunt2elk, did you get the Hemi or the diesel? Looks like the gas, does it have 400 hp?
