1969 Charger R/T resurrection

Yeah-yeah, quit rubbing it in lol. That hole in your hood is looking better all the time. I think I might pick up a K&N and try it with the Proform base. Then I will have boughten 3 air cleaners for 1 car :BangHead:.

Don't feel bad Joel, I ended up buying a couple myself. I have the K & N Extreme filter, filter lid and drop base on mine as well. I have a new Summit element top (doesn't fit K & N filter), and a new summit element filter (too tall) sitting in a box, collecting dust. I'm using a K & N Drop base.

Good to see you back on the forum Speedy. Everybody must be healthy again in your neck of the woods huh? I looked at the K&N also and like the extra flow through the top, but thier bases only drop 1.25" - the same as a Holley.

Thanks Elk and yep I'm finally done playing Dr. Love lol and pops is coming back from his trip tomorrow so I'll finally be back to the shop working on frankenstein, been a long couple weeks! But yeah I was using my K&N Xtreme on my Chevelle that had some hood clearance issues too, like you said I chucked the K&N base for I think a 1 1/2" drop I had laying around. Think it was a Mr. Gasket or something but piecing a setup together with the proform base like you said might be your best bet :thinker:

Hey H2E . . . here's a wild and crazy idea . . . just a thought . . .

What about changing it up and making it a Cool Air setup ? ? And you could place the filter like this ? ?

View attachment 176289

Just throwing the idea out there . . .

You already know I think outside the box . . . or in this case, inside a box ? ? ( smile )

That would solve my problem, but it is a little to modern looking for me - no offense.

Hunt, Here's a suggestion that isn't too modern: Do what Ma Mopar did in this predicament of wanting longer time to mix air and fuel and not having room under the hood to fit a carb spacer.......... Cross Ram Intakes.

Hey Will, not sure if RR's and Chargers have the same hood clearance but what kind of space do you have from the top of the stud to the bottom of the hood? Are you using a hood pad? I see great minds must think alike - we both mounted our coils the same way.

Anybody using this Edelbrock model? It comes in either red, blue, or black. Looks a lot like the K&N's, but I cant find any heighth dimensions.

A/C meant air cleaner sorry :). modding stock air cleaner base by using the drop base to lower it. cutting and combining the two to drop the original.

Someone on here has done it

And they talk about women and their shoes...

You will want to keep that 1/4" spacer, its a good insulator to keep fuel peculation at bay. From the looks of your pics that lid is pretty tall? Maybe there is a flatter one out there?
That Edelbrock air cleaner does look nice, but wonder how much help the lid will be when its close to the hood blanket. I guess any added filter area is better than nothing.
I have a RPM on the shelf that I'd like to put on my '66 Charger, after seeing all this I'm a little nervous. Running a Torker II and the RPM is approx .5" taller. Plan is to get a WO scoop and then there will be no problems. Just haven't collected the funds for that yet.

P.S. June is right around the corner.

Yeah, I know - coming right up. This buffing project is kicking the kids a$$. He is taking a couple days off to let his arms rest. About 3/4's of the car is done with the wool pad and aggressive compound. After that is finished he will be doing the 3 step 3M process with the foam pads. I will say though that what is done looks awesome.
As far as intakes go, these RPM's are very popular but I think I would seriously check into the Holley Street Dominator if doing it again. It is a short single plane that seems to hold its own against the RPM.

Yeah the Street Dominator used to be the hot manifold, recommended by Mopar.
Actually the Torker II isn't too shabby either, should just leave it alone.

Good point Reed!

You bet Joel!

Going off the machinist puddy test, I got me a whopping 1.4" of clearance. I looked up the Summit Racing receipt from the drop base, I was mistaken, it's a Keyser MFG 1.75" drop base, not K & N. It is a K & N 3" Filter and Element top. I'm running an Indy DP intake, so i'm about .250" shorter than your eddy. No hood pad.

As far as clearance RR vs. Charger....the 68-69 roadrunner is known for just a tad more clearance than the 68-60 Charger. That's coming off Dodgecharger.com. I would think with a 2" Drop Base, you would have no problems. I know when Pettyblue72 was around he ran the same Intake/Carb as you with a 2" spacer on his '67GTX and it fit fine. And those aren't known for great hood clearance either. I don't know how you could manage a hood pad under there, that's a tall intake.

Wow, you could throw a party in there. I just ordered one of these from Jegs. It is a Spectre Extra Flow. I will try it with my Proform base, and if that doesn't work maybe the base you used. What is the minimum amount of hood clearance that a guy could feel safe with?

Hehehehe...Yeah, a regular old hoedown. As far as a reasonable distance, I honestly wish I had more that I got, just in case I threw a mount and the motor twisted up. But, I guess with even 3 inches the same could possibly happen and a lot of cars don't have that. That don't really answer your question, so from where I stand the best answer I got is 1.4" inches. LOL. At least 2" I would feel better about it, but no problems so far, and that's all I got to work with (unless I change the intake).

Good luck with the Spectra. Sharp looking set-up.

Ok Will, last question I am going to ask you about this - fingers crossed. Here is my Proform base and measuring like this I have 1 7/16". Does your Keyser measure much more than this? I've already bent my throttle return bracket way down and think much more of a drop will be interfering with my throttle linkage.

Joel,

Just got done measuring my base out. Keyser was being a little optimistic about their 1.75". I got 1.5", maybe a 1/32" over .5

I have the throttle return spring set up like yourself and had to do the same, or the springs would have been rubbing up against the bottom of the base. Anyways, IMO for maybe a tenth of an inch, don't think the Keyser would be worth $30 bucks to ya. Heck a little trimming on yours and you'd easily be where i'm at. One thing I will mention is just like the spectre and eddy filter lids, the K & N lid also pitches up a tad. Finding a nice flat one might give you another 1/4" or more. I would imagine you would need to trim down your carb bowl vents a little, which isn't a big deal.

This is one of the last purchase choices I have to make once I get my hood back on and fitted... I definitely know what thread I'm coming to now to help with my decision!

Thanks Will - you're the greatest! I thought about grinding the bottom flange of the base too. I think I should be able to get 1/8" off and still clear my throttle linkage. I'll make that decision once the Spectre arrives. Regardless, I wish there was more room under there.

I've got a real nice looking/brand new Holley air cleaner kit with a 1 1/4" drop sitting on my shelf that would look sweet on your car lol.

Hey no problem Joel....Car guys helping car guys out. Nice thing is internet, parts availability and sites like this. Imagine if restoring/modifying our cars today was like 15-20 years ago? Mail order catalogs, telephone calls to down south or out west. Fitting parts, troubleshooting, scouring every available swap meet and knowing what works and doesn't. Miss certain part of it all, others i'm glad.

Hope it works out for you Joel. :icon_wink:

Which Holley kit is it? If it left you that tight I'm not sure I would have room for it either :(

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-120-102/overview/

This is the one I have. I wouldn't use it on a Charger with a RPM, but Will thought RR's had more room under the hood?

That is sharp! and you're right I do have a bit more room so it could squeeze in. I don't think the chrome look is for me though I'm either leaning a filter element top like you guys have used or spun aluminum.

You should throw that Holley in the For Sale section though someone will grab that up!
