1969 GTX....The T stands for tetanus

In prep for some stickier tires, I installed a billet pinion yoke from Mancini. The piece looks nice but doesn't have room for the seal guard. This is a 7260 u joint in a 741 housing "gasp!" but I am not going to run wrinkle walls and I will footbrake off the line so i don't anticipate any issues. I still need to get a driveshaft loop. Install was very simple.

I finally took her out of the comfort zone and drove her to Dateland and back to Yuma on I-8. 110.67 miles to be exact. I filled up the tank before I left and after I got back to see where my mileage is, roughly. Cruising at an average of 61 mph, most of it was 67-70 at 3200 rpms on the highway I was averaging 10.64 MPG, kind of where I thought I was but now I know.

Max speed 92? Isn't the speed limit 75?

Well....yes :) I had to deal with a Cali driver who thought it would be fun to pass me, get in my lane and slow down to 62 mph. And when I went to pass him he took offense and sped up so I had to get it on!!:D

Another tidbit of info. Because my speedo is unhooked (sending it off to get fixed tomorrow) I added tick marks along my tach at certain constant speeds. I marked it in 4 spots, 35, 45, 55, and 65 at steady, flat cruise. It is pretty accurate and I really don't even need the speedo but figured after @Billccm buys it he will appreciate it working :)

And what turned into replacing a small steering gear seal ended up being a rebuild. The worm gear bearing adjuster seal was weeping so I went to replace it and while backing the adjuster off, the worm gear backed off enough that the lower cage bearing fell from the race and was smooshed when I put it back together.

So, I'll order bearings tomorrow. These are pretty simple mechanically but......watch those needle bearings!!! I have the original Miller Tool to keep them in place but boy can they be boogers if that sector shaft slips out.

Looks like quite the job! So your selling the X?

Easy job with the right tools. I'm not selling it at the moment, just giving Bill a hard time :)
I'm waiting for the opportunity. I figure time is on my side as you continue to repair and improve. Besides I've lost the interested candidate for my road runner. He ended up buying a 66 mustang convertible.

I didn't think you were selling your car.

Mustang....is he a secretary? :)

Of course after I order a set of worm bearings I find a new one I squirreled away when I rebuilt my last one. Got it put together this morning, filled with new grease.

The old grease is neither bearing grease nor gear oil. The closest match to the thick soup is John Deere Cornhead Grease. Flows great but not thin enough to seep past the seals. I'll get the box installed tomorrow.

And I got my driveshaft loop to install!!

Pictures, we need pictures!

Here you go....

:)

I didn't get pics of the steering box rebuild, I was too focused lol. But here it is re-installed...

And the driveshaft loop. After I get it fit, I'll probably weld the upper section together and just leave the lower loop bolted.

Looks almost identical to the jegs one I got.
Is that your border patrol ride with the ears?

Driveshaft loop is installed. I used a few spacers to even the mounts up since the floor under the seats is not flat but it worked out.

And I put on these new grease caps from Bill Rolik...

I was a little concerned about you driveshaft input shaft depth but then I figured your rear end is probably hanging, making it look that way.
