1969 Road Runner facelift

Thanks guys, I'll take another run at it this weekend, see how far I can get.

Looks great Dave! By the way, is that a 66 Caprice Classic in the back ground of one of your pics?

Yes it is.

327/powerglide.

We had one when I was a kid, (also had road runners and other cool cars).

When I left for the marines in 1990, my step dad gave me a ride to seps in his 66 caprice, sweet car.

It was stolen while I was away at boot camp.

In early 1991 I was serving in the gulf war, I sent all my money home and asked my step dad to go buy me a car with my money. I gave him a "short list" a 66 chevy 2 dr caprice was one of the cars on the short list.

He found one in the classifieds while on business in the twin cities area in MN in 1991. He bought it.

He, with the help of my 2 younger brothers tore the engine out and rebuilt it, freshened up the trans too. The car was nice as he purchased it but they had the interior freshened up as well as some spot and blend body/paint work.

When I returned to the states in 1992 I got my car, and my wife. (Married 20 yrs ago)The car was our daily driver, it was our wedding car. We have 3 kids now ranging from 18 down to 8 yrs old.

All 3 kids came home from the hospital in that car after being born.

Truth be told... I'm kind of a Ford guy. But that's my chevy, and you guys have seen my mopar.

That's a great story. To some people they wouldn't even remember those things, but to a car guy its awesome. My mom had a 66 Caprice classic when I was growing up in the 70s. I love that roof line! Don't see them much any more.Sounds like you're younger then me, I'm 48. Just had to ask because it brought back many good memories. Keep up the good work on the 69!

And its a great Mopar Dave... But i can appreciate your 66 Caprice, My first legal driving car was a 66 Chevy Impala 2 dr HT.. Little 283 automatic, loved that car and still have the horn button with the Impala on it lol. 70s were a great time to be young, cars, music and my wife of almost 35 years now, well May 28th...

Well it wasn't the committed weekend that I wanted, but some work did get done on the car so that's better than nothing I guess.

I decided to use ordinary construction adhesive to "glue" my hood skin to my stamped hood frame in the spots where there was originally a seam sealer of sorts which sets the height of the hood skin in relation to the stamped frame on the underside.

To do this I decided to use a pair of saw horses as support bunks and a wheel/tire as a weight to offer some downward pressure on the stamped frame as the adhesive sets up.

Here's a shot of the new rear bumper with most of the hardware transferred over to it from the old bumper.

Here's my best worker running the 90 degree angle die grinder with sanding pads inside the engine bay.

The exhaust manifolds are off.

I will cut that shaft out of the manifold and plug the 2 holes it went through as part of my manifold refurb.

I'm really glad I pulled the manifolds, I did have an exhaust leak that sounded like hell under the hood before and I was also getting a bit of a coolant smell from a minor coolant leak on one side that was burning on the exhaust manifold. I see that I was missing one of the special long reach manifold nuts on both manifolds. So I'll be ordering a fastener kit for these along with my gaskets.

thanks.

I started to develop an awareness yesterday, a realization I guess you could say. Realizing that I'm actually pretty damn close to pulling this car back together again.

It's the sort of thing I need, that realization. I need to motivate that desire that drives me to stay out in the shop till midnight on week nights, tinkering with the car. That’s the kind of forward surge this project needs right now.

Man that's good to hear. Nothing like some fresh wind in your sails. By far you're over the hump. Sure would be nice to have in house help, you're truely blessed to have a family that not only understands your passion with cars, but actually helps you. Good stuff!

Me, I get an occasional cold Leinnenkugel's delivered and a "Car's looking great" now and then....but that's fine by me. Anyways, as always, progress is looking great Dave.

Good woman, grinder in one hand beer in the other...she got a sister?

lol! No she's one of a kind.

I've been searching all night for parts from classic industries, 521 and Herbs.

I hate this, searching for stupid little parts, it seems there is no one stop shopping for this stuff.

Nobody says whats in a "paint gasket kit" I'm hoping it's side marker housing gaskets and stuff like that?

521 has the rivets for the air grabber, someone else has bumper bolts and fender bolt kits, classic industries has the bulk of my order I guess with carpet, vinyl top, weatherstripping etc...

What do I need for my back glass? I mean the glass rope/ribbon, the stuff you use to install the glass itself?

ughhh, money...

Dave the stuff for the back glass is 3M Butyl seal and comes in 2 sizes 5/16 and 3/8,same stuff you use on the GM products.Have you checked Dante's Mopar parts?I ordered a pile from him, saved $200 alone on a Legendary interior kit by buying from him and not direct from Legendary.

Here's a link to there site. http://www.dantesparts.com/index.html

dave-she sure did good work on the engine bay. Glad to hear you're kickin' it into high gear. You'll have that paint on b4 you know it.

I've had good luck with Dantes also. Have you ever heard of Penstar? I have just run across them, but not ordered anything yet. They seem to have very competitive pricing.

Thanks, I might check them out too.

biggest issue I see with this mopar stuff is that all the vendors seem to be into a segment of the products needed for these cars for the most part but nobody seems to have "one stop shopping" Which I guess is fine. I couldn't believe how difficult it was to find a fender fastener set (all the U-nuts and correct bolts) and even the bumper bolts.

Looking at around another 2 thousand $ to pour into the money eater.

That buys all my weatherstripping and body gaskets, glass run seals, carpet, vinyl top, rubber bumpers for doors, hood, trunk lid etc... a bunch of new hardware for things like the fenders, bumpers, exhaust manifolds, air grabber assy... decals, emblems, door handle pads and lock gaskets... the T-7 bronze basecoat, misc shop consumables like sandpaper, rear window ribbon, windshield molding clip sets, a windshield and gasket.....

Oh my....

then another $1200-$1500 for wheels and tires I suppose...

It's a good thing I have money to burn....

Wait.......

sonofa...

I'm still poor. :(

Ma did some more engine bay sanding tonight and I did some detail filling/sanding at the back bottom corners of the door openings to improve the reveal. Then I switched over to some blocking with 120 grit on the body prior to my next shot of epoxy which will be followed quickly by my polyester primer.

Once I get my poly prime blocked to around 400 I'll urethane prime/seal. Then I can start spraying color inside the doors, engine bay, inside trunk, under side of the trunk lid/hood...

I'll spray base, then clear, then mask and shoot the A-surfaces.

(I still haven't touched the fenders though... )

I'm thinking about welding my antenna hole shut on the RH fender top.
