1969 Road Runner facelift

Well I'm pretty much ready to spray my polyester primer on the body shell and doors. I've used evercoat slicksand in the past and I really liked it. This time around I went with clausen all u need because the solids% was so high I figured it might be even better than the slicksand. I cracked a can of the "all u need" open last night and began the stirring of the poly prime task which can take an hour if you don't have a shaker (and I dont).

Well I finally got it mixed up and.... I'm not impresed so far, it flows off the mixing stick about like any other primer. It doesn't seem to be the typical heavy bodied fluid I'm used to for a poly primer. i think I could shoot this stuff no problem at all with my 1.8 tip Devilbiss JGA... but I have a gravity feed gun set up for poly prime with a 2.2 fluid tip so I gusee I'll use that.

Waiting for my supplied shipment to come in, I am out of scuff pads. I want to scuff my cured epoxy completely before shooting the poly primer.

I'll report back with my opinion on the "all u need" vs the slicksand I am more familiar with.

Well I sprayed the poly prime tonight (clausen all u need)

My thoughts are that they tried to create a do all primer that was an etch, an epoxy like prime with it's water tightness, and a surfacing primer with great sandability.

So, it's like any multi purpose product. Like a crossover car/suv/truck. Kind of ok for everything but not really great at any one particular thing.

Like a dual sport motorcycle, it isn't really an awesome motocross bike and it isn't really a great touring bike.... Know what I mean?

Long story short, I wont be buying it for any future projects, because my body and paint work is multi stage, one step at a time with the right product for each step.

I wanted surfacing, high film build. I didn't need any of the other wonderful claims that the product has. I just wanted great film build of polyester for block sanding.

I will be going back to something like slicksand from evercoat.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not mad and i am not discouraged, this will work fine. It's just not the best high build polyester I've used.

Engine bay is epoxy and poly primed too.

It was a good night.

Still drying.

Just curious as to why you wouldn't have pulled the motor and tranny?

ok, I'll do this again...

How can I make this as short as possible....

I have no problem with pulling an engine/trans. What I do have a problem with is stopping with that. The K frame would be next, then the rear axle and springs, I'd be ordering tubing to build a rotisserie, I'd have the engine apart even though it's healthy.... I'd be researching the latest modern grind for cam shaft, no bolt would be left un-turned.

And that's not a bad thing, if that's what you set out to do. But that's not what I originally set out to do with this car and I'm trying to stay tethered to a certain set of limits, I'm trying to remain connected to a certain budget of time and money.

I hopefully will keep the car for 20 years and if that's the case, then I will have another run at this some day when the kids are grown up and I maybe need a hobby or something to tinker with.

But right now I am a busy mofo and I want to remain focused on putting a nice sharp “driver” together. I want to drive it this summer.

Most folks would have the restraint to just pull the engine, clean it on the outside, paint it up pretty, as well as the K frame etc.... and stuff it back in after paint.

I'm not that guy and I know it better than anybody.

I'm more of the "Hey, we came this far, let’s see what's over the next hill" and so on and so forth forever more.

So this is sort of a line in the sand I have drawn for myself. (leaving the engine in)

Hey guys, the primer looked really good this morning, I may have been a bit harsh on the product last night in my rating of the product, we'll see how well it sands and how badly it loads the paper when doing so. That will weigh pretty heavily on my opinion of the product.

Looks great Dave....I hear ya on opening up on any project. Can't just leave well enough alone once it's exposed and there's only one way to do something....the right way. Hope the paint flows well there chief.

Thanks prop.

See I have a string of projects lined up behind the tin chi.... oops, not supposed to use that name anymore

Behind the road runner, lol!

I have (3) 70's vintage trucks, all 4x4 fords waiting for some attention, a 66 chev caprice 2dr hdt, a pair of 64 galaxies, a 54 chev 2dr and a 51 ford 2dr.... They are all waiting their turn to get into the shop.

As you can see, my project list slightly outlasts the remaining days of my life here on earth... LMAO!

I'm going to cull the project herd a bit, but even still.... Yeah it's just too much.

That's no excuse to skimp on the bird... but I just have to get it back on the road ASAP, it's been a beautiful spring and that car should be out there pounding pavement and intimidating high school hot rods (dodge neons with glued on plastic spoilers and a metal coffee can exhaust tip is what passes for a hot rod these days.... it aint right...)

Dave I hear ya on that. I just got rid of the mustang project and will finish breaking down the 68 T&C to parts, mostly sheetmetal, chrome and seats, and then that's it for me. I told myself no more projects no bringing home of anything except scrap metal which = $$. Lots of room in my shop now. Keep up the good work Dave.

I'll call it the "Tin Chicken" for you Dave, just as mine is "Skeletor". Hell man, it's a tradition, just like someone naming a ship. It's like having a dog and naming it "Black Lab" or "German Sheppard"

dave-that primer didn't look to bad.How did it dry and sand.I'm jealous now,i don't have a name for my RR.Maybe we can start a RR name service. Are you getting close to paint now?

I haven't put any sandpaper to it yet but it sure dried nice and hard.

I'll start sanding today.

Lookin real good Dave. It'l be in paint before you know it. What color? I'm sure you already said somewhere, but I'm lazy. LOL

Alright, the "all u need" primer sands really nice. No clogging of the paper, the dry film build is very good for final leveling..... Yeah I guess I might have been a little rough on it in my mini review the other night.

It's looking good.

Yep, this is why we surface and block sand. Even brand new steel isn't perfectly straight.
