1969 Road Runner facelift

here's a look at what that quarter skin seam looks like from inside the trunk.

Gonna be really easy to hide that seam.

102_5890.jpg

that looks like a real smooth seam on the top of the quarter.and you're right, you won't be able to tell anything from the inside trunk.my lips are sealed(for a small fee)LOL.

Ha! I'm wrung the heck out man! Too much crawlin round, fit and trim, re-fit etc... Damn!

lol!!

Plus I was babysitting 2 racks of pork ribs that I charcoal/apple wood smoked for 6 hours today...

Good stuff, really good

GREAT work DAVE! You are an inspiration. Glad to hear you got your parts from Jeff. I've bought some parts from him and he is an awesome guy! He's got a couple MOPARS too so he's in this just like the rest of us. Keep the pictures coming. Now if I could only get back to Kansas and work on my convertible!

Jeff was damn good to work with, fast and straight forward.

Nothing to do with Jeff when I say AMD might want to take a look at that trunk extension.

I'm used to trimming T-extensions for being to long, sucks bad when they don't reach.

I agree, Jeff is a great guy to work with...

That's strange you have an issue with those extensions Dave. My AMD extensions lined up pretty much perfect with the new quarters on the bottom.

Maybe you got blessed with a set of late friday night shift parts or like Matt's quarters, mutant prototypes..

Looks great other then that extension. Looks like it falls short of lining up with the wheelhouse too! Let me or prop know if we can take some reference measurements off the "DOG" and Skeletor. I think I am going to try to spend some time down at the collision shop this week. I gotta say that that is one place that my quarters fit up nicely.

I've never had trouble with a trunk extension reaching the quarter, If anything I've had to trim them back for being a little generous in length. These look like they would maybe fit a dogde dart or something lol!

(it's really not funny at all but, what the hell do I do? they are bought, paid for and welded in place)

I suppose I'll have to graft in some length to reach the rest of the way, extend my extensions...

Ok guys, moving along..

I did a little old school metal bumping with the old martin hammer & dolly set tonight.

Straightened this area a little.

Before:

A little door jamb work and I can hang this quarter skin.

nice work with the metal bumping. it's amazing what can be done with simple tools and a whole lotta patience.

Thanks.

What a lot of people dont realize is that the biggest rule in metal bumping is to NOT strike directly on the dolly, meaning... If you are getting that "ping" noise with the hammer, not good.

You have to strike slightly off center with the hammer, that's how you raise dents.

But if you ping, you are flattening the sheetmetal (stretching) and that aint good.

Martin Hammers are great! Made in the good ol' U S of A...... You got the cross hatched shrinking head on yours Dave? Looks like you made nice work of taming those ding's.

No I don't have the shrinking head. I'm just not at that level, that srinking stuff is like master black belt stuff, I think I'm just a brown belt.

I've got 3 or 4 hammers including a pick of course and several dollies.

Have you ever seen those metal rotarry wheels or "shrinking disks"?

That's getting up into jedi metal worker level.

And yes I do my best to suport US manufactured products with everything I buy. Pretty much impossible to do 100% but I watch for it really hards and it's always my first choice. Tools, guns, optics, boots... what ever I can.

Door jamb tonight compliments of Detmatt1's donor jamb from the junkyard dog project.

(I'm still determined I can find some bbq sauce for him even though I aint in texas)

LOL....Jedi level.

Nothing wrong with a brown belt! Now if it was a rainbow belt, people might start asking questions...:eusa_think:

I never tried the shrinking disc's Dave.. Raised an eyebrow seeing them, but never took the money or time to try them out.

Have a good time with the jambs tonight...Ol' Skeletor will be getting my attention tonight as well

To be honest, i simply do my best to avoid dent work by trying to not purchase too many of them.

But they find me, they always find me.

Roof dents, that's my nemisis, roof dents follow me through life, I can't escape them!!

lol!!

I swear every damn job I take on involves roof dents, or hood dents, trunk lid... arg!!

Dents out in the center of the "drum skin"

Hateful to deal with a dent out in the center of a frickin trampoline!!

lol!!

Have fun with skeletor.

Bad door jam piece coming out.

New piece from Matt trimmed to fit

102_5907.jpg

There actually were some cracks in the replacement piece which I think is normal, I welded them up and installed the new plate.

Welded from the back side to try and keep the outside grinding and cleanup down. I still need to get into some of the inside radiuses with a die grinder stone but it's not bad and the door shuts great now.

I measured the reach of my extension on this side and found that it would fall short of reaching the bottom edge on the quarter just as the other side did.

But it's in there right, It doesn't make much sense, it's resting on the end cap piece which is flush with the top of the rear crossmember.

102_5912.jpg

So, I bent the bottom edge down so I could reach with the edge of the extension when I put the quarter on.

I hung the LH quarter skin tonight also.

I have to finish my wheel house welds, actually I need to do all of my bottom welds, but it's tacked up top, tail pan is welded and door jamb welded. Fits nice.

Dammit, I ran out of shielding gas for my welder again, guess that means I've had a lot of trigger time on el polo loco.

I finished welding the bottom side and wheel house of the LH quarter, I managed to stretch the trunk extension bottoms to touch the quarters with the bottom edge of the extensions so I was able to weld them.

Then threw on a spool of .023 wire and started stitching the long splice seams on the quarters, and ran out of gas.

oh well, I was ready for a break.

I don't know if I'll be able to pick up my shielding gas tonight or if it will have to wait till saturday morning. Could just as well wait, I could move on to sanding the rest of the car down, it would be a change of scenery for me and a whole new smell, I was getting tired of smelling my own skin burning anyways.
