1969 Road Runner facelift

I think I just used about a 1/4" drill bit for the trunk pan holes.

Mother's day yesterday so the bird got some rest while I worked on the driveway and other outside yard type chores.

Just a little sanding tonight, getting down to bare metal.

bondo excavation.

The dent in this door must have had a half a gallon of bondo in it, there is no sign of thenm even trying to pull the dent. I think I'll get by with a little less filler when I redo it.

I also took a picture of my paint color (new color) in natural light. It's the sunburnt copper.

Yikes......Lotza mud.

BTW, That color is awesome!!

Who makes Key Slime Pearl? LOL ...See it in the paint chip guide up there....

No Doubt....I'd paint a car that color just to be able to tell people.."I just tossed on a few fresh coats of Key Slime."

I just got a PM reply to my hunt for a windshield gasket. (moparsteve636)

I could have a new gasket in my hands as soon as the end of May.

That's really good news that's going to breathe some life back into this project. I was actually slowing the pace a bit because I was so gloom & doom over this gasket and really wanting to pull the old one for propper cleaning/prep of the glas tray and a nice new leak proof install.

Time to pick up the pace a little bit again.

Pert neer half way sanded.

Mopar steve's talk of a possible windshield gasket by the end of the month inspired a pretty good heap of work tonight.

That is awesome news, I need me 1 or 2 of those myself. Car looks very bland compared to last week! you better get some paint on that old hippy!

First pass at shredding all the old paint and fillers off this side. I'll go around the entire car again with 80 grit to "clean" things further.

But it feels really good seeing the slate partially wiped clean so I can take a fresh run at the body work and paint.

A lot of things have changed in the past 35 years when this car was last refinished. Better products are available today and more importantly the car is 3 1/2 decades older and that much more desireable. So the expectations are up quite a lot as far as body & paint.

unfortunately I uncovered more problems with the rocker than I thought I was going to find.

I can patch it, but I might have replaced the rocker entirely if I had known sooner. Rookie mistake by not exploring the rocker further before putting the quarter skin on.

But it's ok, it will be fixed correctly when I'm done.

ah yes the many many hours of sanding. i dont understand our mentality the work is hard we mumble and grumble while were doing it yet were always eager to go back and do it again on another car

Are you going to hit it with epoxy primer first before you start body work?

well I usually like to press a shot of metal 2 metal across the long weld seams first, seal pin hole/perosity concerns first, then sand it flat across that long seam and squirt the epoxy before I start the typical polyester fillers.

I imagine I could shoot the epoxy first too, I just love epoxy, I's my default foundation for this stuff.

What would you suggest?

I see guys using epoxy, some using self etch primer then epoxy, some just using self etch and then filler and some using filler on top of bare metal which has worked for eons. Any metal fillers for the factory joints or the lap & flange joints you did need to go on bare metal first and then primers from there. I will be using some metal fillers and then epoxy primer ( black ) on my project. I have a gallon of the PPG epoxy already, $145.

Nice!

It looks like it is coming along really good Dave. Are you gonna have it done in time for the Midwest Mopar show?(I was the A-body tech guy there for over 10 years) Keep up the good work!

what's midwest mopar show?

(flame suit on)

I'm a brand new mopar guy lol!!

I'll be rollin probably as soon as I can get my hands on a front windshield gasket.

I sanded just a bit on the hood last night until my oldest boy got done with track then the 2 of us took the trailer behind my pickup out to our cabin to load up a little tractor to bring home. My driveway is a mess at home, need that tractor to blade/fix it up.
