Any of you guys still run a 2bbl on your 383 or 400. Im looking to keep mine somewhat stock for my rebuild. im goin to go with the kb240 pistons, zero deck. balance the lower, and work my 346 heads a little and hopefully attain a 9.5 - 10:1 compression ratio, just to get the engine running a little stronger. Im debating wether to keep the stock carter BBD or try an run a holley 2300 500cfm street carb. Im also looking at possibly bumping the cam up to a Magnum 383/440 resto-cam or a lunati 10305. Any thoughts? Id really like to keep it a 400/2bbl configuration just cause thats how the car came.

well, if you plan on doing all of that, then you better richen that carburetor up to meet the demands of the engine. a set of 346's (non-milled) and KB240 pistons will only get you close to 9.5/1 CR. I am sorry to say, but your 500cfm carburetor (unless you plan on driving like a grandma everywhere) will be unable to meet the needs of your engine in high-rev situations.. you will simply just "lean out" on the top end.

Now, with that being said, is it the most ideal intake/carb combo.. hell no.. but it will work and maintain the stock appearance. Just do not expect to win any drag races against cars that breathe easier due to a better intake/carb setup.

I am not a naysayer.. I say build it!!! I would love to hear your experiences regarding the performance.

thanks for the reply. This car is just going to be a cruiser, its a GY9 1972 Satellite Sebring Plus, 727 trans, 2.76 rear. If i ran the 2bbl i would definatly set a rpm limit of 5000rpm. with the extra low-end torque pushing those 2.76 gears it should be relatively quicker (than stock) and cruise 120 like nothing.

fwiw... my 73 charger had a 400/2bbl with 2.76 gears in it and i was clocked at 148mph.

All around performance (fuel economy as well as throttle response) could improved if you a used 72 style ThermoQuad setup. Fairly easy to keep it all factory looking.

70 coronet. Freeway cruiser. I too have a 383 with 2.76 gears. The 383 was a 2 bbl. It sucked gas bad and even though I rebuilt the carb it still sucked. I ran hot. 200+ degrees. I put a edelbrock performer rpm and a holley 770 cfm 4160 vac secondary with down leg booster venturis from som chebby 383 dude off EbaY. It's modified....has the choke tower milled off, and metering plates added. I now get 17 mpg at 70 on the highway and run at 180 degrees on the highway 170 around town. The Primaries on the 4bbl are smaller than the 2bbls ,I believe. and what a diff when I stomp it! If I get headers I think I would pick up 20 hp maybe, but its gonna be a lot louder.
RPM's.... 27" tall tires with 2.76 gears is 80 mph at 2500 rmp.. dude if you see 5000 rpm you better have a crash helmit and a roll bar:confused2:
Dump that POS 2 bbl!!!! The Holley is great...

Thanks for the reply guys. If i do go 4 barrel, I will go with a stock looking manifold and thermoquad or AVS setup. I geuss i can put the 2 barrel carter on it at first and cruise for a while and if its not enought go with a 4 barrel setup. Gotta get the body done first. Would still like to hear the guys that run a 383 or 400 2bbl sound off, seems like there arent too many out there.
