$500- 68 charger

Everything is GO for the 1/4 skin install, but I had this one rust spot in the door jam bothering me. It was best to get it now before the skin goes on. I gouged the rust out and made a patch for it.

One more thing before the skin goes on was I wanted to cut a little off the upper and some side of wheel well lip.. I cut about 3/16 off it, which will let my spot weld hole puncher get closer to the middle of the lip, and this is the area I use to reduce width on to help with big tires on my RR's. I can take a little more off later if needed, down to close to half it's original width is possible without weakening the spot welds.

These butt weld clamps are nice but a little tricky., You don't want to tighten them to much or they will put a wave where they are, as I found out. I used 6" scale/ruler as a wedge to align the connecting edges pryor to weld. Also you need to grind the tongues down thinner or smoother so they will come out easy or they can bend your edges of the sheetmetal, as I did in 2 or 3 spots. I may could have gotten them out easier if I had taken them out sooner than with the welds so close. I also smacked the small keystock bars that go thru the back of the butt clamps in their centers with a chisel to prevent them from dropping out and into a spot of no return in the car's crevasses.
Feel good about the fitment, and all is going weld, I mean well.:nike:

There is nothing wrong with flux core. It's just that gas welders will blend the metal and wire together with the heat for a more uniformed weld. The flux is a little harder to grind down, but it is still good. I used flux core on my ramcharger but upgraded to a gas welder for my RR.

My welding is not that pretty I admit, but most of my welds look better than that close up pic. My welder can be set up to use argon also, so I may have to get that going. Thanx for the advise.

I agree. The welding that you have done, I would not have known they were done with flux core. So,you must have been doing something right, cause they seem to be good solid welds.

I was a better welder when I was young. At 58, my eyes are going, my hand is not as steady, I have not mastered setting up my welder, I have many excuses. But I can get a ok weld most times., Better than factory anyway.

Why was I under the assumption that you were in your early twenties?
Any pro will tell you that flux-core is not for sheetmetal, just saying. Now back to this 58 yr old age thing.

Looking great daytona, Im sure the gas welding will be better if you do it but following along i do think you'll get it done in good order.. I hope you'll post some pictures once you finish and grind the welds down..

He is man...just add 6 or 7 beers and Walla, 10 foot tall and bulletproof!

If you have a bottle and a regulator for that welder, run with MIG. Like Roger mentioned, flux core will get you by, but the MIG will produce a better weld on sheetmetal, can run it in cooler, less porosity, no slag to chip/wire wheel away and a lot less spatter.

Yep, like everyone is saying I'd also suggest MIG rather than flux core, especially when you start getting into more sensitive areas like the rear window surround near the roof skin. It'd make things a lot easier but looks like you're getting along well with that quarter :icon_thumleft:
