I'm hoping to be able to afford and build a 500hp (or so) motor. I've got a 400 block that I'll probably get a 512ci stroker kit for but I thought $500 for a 440 long block with steel crank would be a good deal and nice to have also.
Not sure about a goal, but I'm hoping to race the car and would like to go as fast as reasonably possible with a 512 and maybe some nitrous.

my mild 512 is fast for what it is, build one YOU WILL LOVE IT!!! hope to make it to the track this fall.
You should be able to get 500 out of a 440 easy!! I'm planning on 550-575 out of mine with just alum heads and careful parts selection. My goal is 11.50 in the quarter in street trim. So we shall see how it works out.

A 512 stroker can easily net you 600-650 hp depending on final choice of parts.

I'm about to order a new front valance from Restoration Performance Center and they have several to choose from,. which should I get? AMD $270, Goodmark $136, or Sherman $169. Shipping is about $26 for each. I'm assuming you get what you pay for, so is AMD's that much better than the others? Anyone one know of a better deal? I should know after all the different parts I've already got, but can't remember and too lazy to go through my receipts. And I've had pretty good luck with most of the different brands of body parts, just the usual tweaking to fit. I think I remember some stories of some crappy front valances not fitting well.

Don't bet on the fact that AMD costs more so the part will be better. I've had my share of problems with their parts not fitting right. If possible find someone who has used the part you're interested in before deciding.

Hey kid, glad to see you're still plugging away. I bought a outer rocker from Sherman for a good price and I was impressed with the quality and the inner brackets that came with it. I did have slight fitment issues but nothing major. When it came time for the other side I got a deal on a AMD rocker. When it showed up I noticed the thicker gauge steal and the weight. The stamping also seamed better. When I put the Sherman piece in it was like the 90 degree bend wasn't quite 90. Although the AMD piece did not come with inner brackets and I had to steal them out of my old rocker.Hopefully this helps in your decision.

All I can add to this is the difference between the ABS metal and the AMD stuff I bought was night and day. After using some of the AMD metal I actually cut one of the ABS panels back off and replaced it with an AMD piece, fit and quality wasn't even comparable. Never used the other brands you mentioned and my panels were bought back when AMDs dies were still pretty fresh so who knows what shape they're in now?

Thanks David, Enjoying your thread also, love 70's, just a hair less than 68's, lol. It's a pleasure to think that my thread helps others here, because I've sure gotten a lot of help from other guys also. As I've said before it's kinda like "each one teach one", in some ways. I did this thread also for documentation that may help the value of the car, or maybe not. And it's good to be able to go back and see how I did something that I can't remember. So in other words these threads are multi-beneficial to writers and readers.

Well, the car show was ok, guess I was hoping for a bigger turn-out. There were about 25-30 cars, and they were very nice ones, There was a nice variety from stock model A's to more modern blown street rods, but no mopars. Maybe/hopefully I will have mine there next year. Sorry, I got there so late I didn't take any pics. Maybe I can find some that some other guys took.

daytona kid, I'm enjoying your build, looking forward to the finished product. As far as the brand of panels to choose from..... I discovered that Goodmark sells a lot of Sherman parts when helping my dad find quarter patch panels for his '66 Satellite. You don't know they aren't actually Goodmark brand parts until you ask. Just hate for you to order theirs hoping for a better or cheaper alternative. As far as Sherman parts go I've never heard anything good about them. Goodmark actually called them "cheesy" when I called them 2 weeks ago, but they still sell them. Much thinner gauge and bends just aren't right. Another place I called (Motorcity Metal I believe) said the same thing as they also carry Sherman parts. Highly NOT recommended for what they described as a nice car. Jim

Due to low funds I went with the Goodmark valance $160 w/free shipping, fortunately it fits fine. But unfortunately while installing it I cut my hand and had to get 9 stitches. And believe it or not, this is the first time I've ever had to get stitched up from a wound/mishap. So anyway, after the doctor bill is figured in, I could have bought the AMD that probably wouldn't have cut me. LOL
That should be that last thing I do to the car before taking it to the paint/body guy.
Speaking of the paint/body guy, I finally met him face to face at the car show and talked with him for a while. He still hasn't seen the car but I will hopefully be taking it to him soon. He is about 75 years old (lots of experience) and has 1 helper. He really seems like a nice guy. He was friends with my uncle so I hope that will help me get a good deal from him.

My painter/body man looked at the car today and we talked numbers. He said he would do all the filler smoothing and paint it gloss black PPG with buffed clear coat for $4000, and it would take no longer than 3 months. Sounds like a deal to me, what do you guys think? He has a long history and good rep in this area so I think I will be taking the car to him in the next few days.
