67 GTX starts instantly when cold, hardly even cranks before it fires up. Two days, 30 days sitting always the same. Starts faster than my new cars cold. Hit the electric fuel pump for 15 seconds, pump the gas four times and it instantly fires and goes into an idle immediately.

Car normally cranks a bit longer when warmed up, and I have noticed a brief clanging noise immediately after starting a few times recently. The noise only lasts a second or so. My best guess is the starter is not completely disengaging when the car is warmed up and I am hearing the flywheel knock it back into the disengaged position.

Does this sound like I am on the right track? Anything to diagnose before I pull the starter and have a look?

Thanks!

Check for loose bolts that hold the starter to the bellhousing.....wouldn't be the first time I've ever seen a starter work loose....

If it's the sound I think your talking about, I believe it's the bendix not meshing exactly with the teeth on the flywheel.
It's a weird sound, higher pitched and kind of hollow sounding. It's usually due to worn teeth. You can easily check by dropping the starter and apply 12v to just the solenoid to eject it and inspect.
Being slower when warm... I'm guessing it's an older starter? and it's integrity is starting to decline, heat is the enemy of anything electrical. Windings start to break down, connections loosen up ect...
