'69 charger r/t-se: Building my dream car

Wow thanks for all the compliments on the dash guys! I'd settle for "not too bad for some kid" haha. Sorry I've been slacking with the updates, been really busy lately but I've kept the progress going when I can

Ended up deciding to strip all of that crappy filler primer and everything off the car to start my bodywork with a clean slate and save myself from any surprises down the road. Started with the passenger side quarter

Then etch-primed it for protection in the meantime until I finish my grille. Also just a note this side I still have to do a lower quarter patch on forward of the wheelwell, where the thin warped metal is. More fixing previous bodyshop sins.. :banghead:

Working around the back of the car, I took the wire wheel to the rear window shelf and laid down a smearing of All-Metal to smooth out the grinding. Started sanding it down in this pic

So I've been switching between a few different things but this has been the main focus lately, finally got the plastic sections of my grille repaired, smoothed out, and scuffed up ready for paint :icon_pray:
I don't even want to know the number of hours I have in just these 3 pieces.. went a little ocd with making everything as close to perfect as I could get but I think it'll pay off, and once it's painted you shouldn't even be able to tell I pieced in that large part of the "finned" section on the right side. Surgery was a success haha

Some awesome work going into that Charger Mr SF :headbang:

Grille paint question

So here's the issue I have now, I bought "matte aluminum" krylon to try for the silver in the grille, but when I tested it on my donor center section, it came out just a shade lighter than I wanted and a little too reflective I think (?)

20131023_065457.jpg

I've heard "Argent silver" and some kind of silver wheel paint mentioned but does anyone have a suggestion for what to use??
I'm going to do some digging through the grille resto archive on the DC forum tomorrow, too.

Also the duplicolor adhesion promoter I used on the test piece didn't go on very smooth so I picked up a can of SEM 39863 since I've had good luck with their stuff so far. Should work for the ABS plastic of the grille right?

From all the digging around I did before painting my grill, it seemed the consensus was Eastwoods Argent Wheel silver, and SEM trim black. So that's what I used on mine. Don't know if it is correct or not, but it looks a lot better than before I started.

SEM has multiple shades of silvers and grays and are very easy to work with and durable. I am sure the same can be said of the eastwood products but your local paint store should have a chip book for the different colors of SEM trim and bumper paint. Main thing with those is lots of very light coats 5-6 light as apposed to 2-3 heavy makes them more durable.

Thanks for the input guys, I already have SEM trim black onhand for the black so if I can find a decent silver I'll be set. (Really like how your grille came out Joel!) I might as well be an SEM posterboy at this point lol

I think I'll see what I can dig up at the local paint/body store after work and if nothing looks right I'll pick up the Eastwood argent silver. For what it's worth this is the exact silver I'm trying to go for:

busy busy haven`t we, looking very good thanks for the up dates:blob1:

" Not bad for some kid " ( isn't that what you said ? ? ) . . . I'll have to settle with Awesome job Speedy ! ! !

Keep up the great work, it's really looking good . . . thanks for keeping us updated ! !

It really is looking good Speed! The Charger grills are so cool looking, That grill in the picture looks as good as it gets, real nice... Good luck. :)

I used the argent silver for some rally rims I painted. They came out looking good, not too reflective. I can't even see where you repaired the grille. The back window lip came out great and the quarter doesn't look like it needs a whole lot of repair.

Great work Speedy, I just finished my grill and also used SEM matte black but chose a charcoal color instead of the silver but they had a huge selection of SEM silvers and greys. Progress is looking good "you'll be painting in no time".

Don't know it's the same shade but 5.7 recommended for the dark argent and he's know's his grill resto's.

From what I understand, Totally Auto is the only place that makes the correct textured dark argent paint. It is pricey, 24 bucks a can!!!

Thanks for the compliment, but I just refinished the grille. It belongs to member MoparBill.

Thanks guys! Actually a pretty cool update, I was able to track down the guy that built the exact Charger I posted earlier. Found a feature article in Mopar Muscle, then googled the shop and gave em a call. Turned out to be Munk Racing Fabrications in CA, and the owner Angelo was really helpful and cool about me asking for help. He said it had been a long time but from what he remembered it was some type of silver krylon fusion paint, which there's only a few of. The only one I found at walmart was the Nickel finish, but it's definitely more on the right track

I'm heading over to a home improvement store right now that has a wall-o-krylon, hopefully they'll have the other finishes for me to test out.

@rrman, yeah that quarter wasn't too bad other than that area I need to patch, I'm just glad there weren't any "half gallon of bondo" surprises haha :icon_thumleft:

And thanks for that link Brian, definitely something to think about and I saw some guys on moparts talking about a darker argent too, but on 'Cuda grilles :thinker:

Speedy - if by chance they don't have a good selection, I can check on the colors that they have here to see if there are any more ? ?

Who knows, different areas may have different colors ? ?

Yes sir, You have this looking great! Looking good now buddy keep up the good work on that Charger!

Well it looks like we got a winner fellas, I talked to my friend Mike that does restorations and got it all figured out. He originally told me to use that matte aluminum, but I bought the wrong one, "metallics" line. The one he meant is Krylon #1403 "dull aluminum" that's only available in my area at Ace Hardware. Tested it out and it looks just about perfect to me, what say you guys?

20131028_065314.jpg

The only downside is this one is pretty thin and shows everything so I'll have to go back and do some wet sanding with at least 400 grit before paint. I liked the nickel finish too, but the one I got was some "shimmer" paint that had too big of metallic in it for what I wanted, didn't really notice til I looked at it in the sun. The "dull aluminum" one still has some metallics but is the least reflective out of the ones I tested, and I think is a shade darker than some of the other argent silvers.

And thanks for the offer anyway conv67 :icon_thumleft:

And I should note, I wasn't too worried about being 100% factory correct in this case, but Mike told me that paint is a dead ringer to the factory silver on a lot of mopar grilles. He had just used it on a '68 Dart grille and mentioned it also being used for the inside of '71 'Cuda grille and fender "gills."

Here's what the cans looked like of the 3 that I tested, "dull aluminum" on the left, "nickel shimmer" in the middle, and "matte aluminum."
