71 Road Runner Restoration Started

That car is a thing of beauty !!!!!! And a HEMI to boot..........

Yes sir, i do agree but i have to say with the white interior, i truly think a white stripe would enhance it even more.. Sometimes you cant make it more then the beauty it is i guess.

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgHere are a few photos of the SSB with the nose clip in black epoxy primer. The sky is cloudy and gray this morning so the pictures didn't turn out as good as I hoped for.

You can see the improvement by just looking at the doors which still need sanding down to bare metal.

There is no comparison.

Actually, there is a comparison and your black areas look much better :)

Today's Progress on the SSB

The passenger side door has been sanded down to bare metal. After these pictures were taken I wiped the bare metal down with Ospho.
On the rear quarter panel I sanded it down to the original paint. In some areas I took it all the way down to bare metal here too.
Hopefully tomorrow I can finish sanding everything down and spray the rest of the car with the black epoxy.

Or maybe just leave it the ospho if that will keep it from rusting or clear it ????

It's looking like a very nice project car! Someone is gonna get a nice car to do what they want with

careful....ou're gonna make it look so good you won't wanna give it up!

Man this looks awesome keep posting the pics I love them. It's amazing how people like me learn so much from all the information that you guys r posting. I love it.

The more i see this car the more i wish i was able to get it, especially with that black front end! May not be done but looks like a sinister car to be.

Back in Black !!!!!

careful....ou're gonna make it look so good you won't wanna give it up!

I know, that's what I've been telling myself too. Drove it around in the yard a little today. Then I turned it around in the driveway pad in front of the shop when I parked it so I could work on the rear of the car.:headbang:

I just couldn't stand seeing the remaining original paint on the passenger side rear quarter panel. so I sanded all of it off.IMG_0230.jpgIMG_0944.jpgIMG_3036.jpg

Then I decided to grind out all of the body filler on the trunk lid too.

- - - Updated - - -

There was a pretty good sized dent that someone tried to pull out a little with a dent slide hammer. They didn't doo to good of a job. The dent is still about 1/2 inch deep.

Then I sprayed it with Southern Poly Urethane black epoxy primer after the surface rust areas were treated with Ospho.

I still need to sand the driver side door, remaining portion of the roof, and driver side rear quarter panel.

- - - Updated - - -

The Driver side rear quarter was repaired from a minor collision at some point during the past. Who ever did the repair just took a chunk out of another car and welded it right over the existing quarter panel.

If I was going to keep the car I would be replacing the whole quarter panel with a complete one from AMD. Because of this I'm not sure exactly how much time I will be putting into cleaning the other side up. I'll probably grind all of the filler out so the prospective buyer can see exactly what the car needs.

Hopefully tomorrow I can have the rest of the car black.

Stay tuned...............

I have to agree with you Ron.............. She is starting to look sinister..............

I like that.

Wow man, do you even sleep! You sure are making that car a tempting piece of "sinister"!

I was teasing the wife and told her if I didn't sell the car I could drop a nasty 440 in it and gut the interior. Then I would install a pair of racing buckets and paint it like this.2270067632_2f067e6508_o.jpg

I pretty much have everything to do this.................

She liked the idea !!!!!

Keeping it street legal of course...........

"if I didn't sell the car" That would be surprising!

"I pretty much have everything to do this" Cool and not surprising! :)

"She liked the idea" Thats pretty cool, i don't think i could get the same reaction from my wife..

"Keeping it street legal of course" Ok, But i would think after seeing it sit at your place for awhile temptation may set it!

It is one nice car Louis and it appears to be in even better shape, i hope you will be able to sell it so as to bring the bird back to life but if and i think thats a big if you don't sell it It would look great painted up Petty style and ill bet im not the only one who would be intently watching you make it look like the Kings racer..

How much are you gonna be asking? You are doing a lot of the restoration prep for a perspective buyer so it needs to be a lot more than you paid for it. It looks sexy as is and with the new emerging trend of leaving the body alone and doing the drive train and suspension it's getting close to a really cool driver already :)

I originally was going to ask $2499 for the car and accept any reasonable offer. Now I have spent some more money on it with the tune up, fuel pump and lines, remanufactured carb and paint / body supplies. Plus I have spent some time working on it too. The brakes still need some serious work.

Like I mentioned earlier, this car is rock solid where it counts. The frame rails, floor pans, firewall, inner fender wells are all rust free. The trunk floor has two small holes on the driver side that a dime will cover and would be a very easy patch. The AC system still has Freon in it too. It will make someone a good starting point for a decent car. I seriously wish my RR was half as solid as this car is, even though this car will need a quarter panel.

The current NADA book value is a little above $3400 for an "unrestored driver".

I'm not trying to get rich off the car, but the more money I get from it, the more parts I can buy for the Bird.

So I guess a good starting price would be to ask right around $3,000 for it and accept any reasonable offer in that range.

We live about 30 minutes from the Daytona Speedway. :headbang:

I have some friends who work there (like I did a while ago).

So seriously, this could be a possibility............ LOL

Real Race cars have dents..............

It's tempting..............

Found this picture today on the internet. Definitely a plan "B" if the car doesn't sell. Didn't do anything out back in the shop today. Instead we spent most of the day visiting with Mom.
It did us all some good to spend some quality family time together.

For Sale on FBBO and Craig's List Daytona Beach FL

I just listed the 72 SSB for sale here on FBBO, as well as on Craig's List. I started out asking $3,499 but will accept any reasonable offer.

Please check out the photos here on FBBO for sale forum. They show just how solid the floors and trunk are. I don't have any pictures of the fire wall or front inner fender wells just yet. I will try to take some good photos tomorrow of these areas and will post them with the add too.

I also have a stock complete 440 engine with a steel crank and a 727 transmission to go with the car for a little extra $ if anyone is interested.

If you have been following this thread, you can see how good the car is. I have a clear FL title registered to me, so it is all 100% legal.

If your interested, please send me a PM. I found a POS for sale in NY with no motor or trans, with major collision damage and rust for $2800. This car beats that one hands down.

Thanks !!!!

That color combo is killer! It would be awesome to see it done but, I totally understand you selling it. Sometimes you just got to stick to your priorities. Having extra money for the '71 is a good idea.

...And the red pants with the blue and red striped shirts are pretty cool too:icon_lol:

I found another cool one i had to share, ive seen Don Grotheer 69 RR he raced and think they both were cool.. And good luck in your sale! don't mean to get off track here but this is a way good looking racer..
