Back in the day

I was pumping gas in 1981. It was over $1.00/gallon, but our pumps only had 2 digits. So the price was always set to 1/2 and then we had to double whatever the total was.

Nothing like a small, semi-controlled environment for an electro-chemical EXPLOSION.

Personally had very little trouble with that (and knew how to fix/splice, if I did).

I had a Sony deck 2-ish models up from that one and it never ate a tape.
Started with a Realistic that ate about 3 in the 6 years I had it.

However, those prerecorded tapes were generally not of a very good quality.
I preferred to buy vinyl and use Maxell UDS II (after extensive cost vs quality testing).

Also practiced "safe tape insertion" and refused to put my package into a known tape eating deck or low quality deck.

With EQ, level control, and a dolby trick, I could make a tape that sounded better than the vinyl it came from and also make a decent stereo system sound better than it was.
