Car Show pet peaves

Around here the Mopar shows are as bad, or worse. They put new Challengers in the same class as classic, then give the trophies to the new cars, when all they did was wax it. Never mind that someone spent years building their classic, spending all their time money and creativity on it. When they do pick a classic, it's usually a buddy. And yes every time I went there the p t cruiser with the pep boys treatment got a trophy. Worst part is the same a holes judge the Garlits show.

All good rants..unfortunately it is the way of the events todays..most are sponsored by a local club or other organization and thus set the general tone of the event and known members are the favored entries. I have never understood the concept of paying for others to have the privilege to see my cars..our largest event of the area is a great fund raiser and they do well but the cars are selected in a judges meeting prior to the actual event. As a judge one year for this event (and last time I attended) this went totally against all rules of fair play...sponsor cars get trophy and I know of one instance where the trophy made it to the guy even though his entry did not make the show...so yeah...you think you competing against a car displayed..no, you competing against sponsorship money, nepotism and generations deep good ole boy....I do not bother to attend an event unless there is a swap meet going on..

I'm not interested in having any of my cars "judged" by "experts".

That's not at all what this hobby is about to me.

For me it's all about the styling, mechanics, and "attitude" of the cars of the 60's and 70's.

I can certainly see the issue with stick-on chrome and wire covers (or fresh off the showroom) cars garnering a trophy, though.

I'd like to put the damn thing under the hood and close it with the legs sticking out.

I don't mind modern Mopars at a Mopar only show. (I'm an owner but always take the 69) I dislike the 50-50 drawings where you have to stay til 430 PM. Or, they "don't know" when the drawing will be. Usually some moron has a loud thumping radio even though it says no loud radios. The new Vettes look like a design-collision where everyone on the committee had their way.

We have all been exposed to the issue of inferior or new cars getting trophies. I go to the local shows and bring my mopar but not for the trophy. I believe my car is the trophy and don't give a rats *** for any of the dust collectors that a lot of people go for. I go to see what I like to see and walk right past the Corvettes and other Generic Motor vehicles that always seem to win in a participant voter show. I guess these people are proud of their abilities to put a few stickers on their bumper and a lift kit on their new truck and think everyone will love it. I don't put much stock in who or what wins the popularity contests at these shows and seldom stick around for the awards. I think the last time I did, the show was put on by a Chevy club where classes were judged by selected Judges. Chevys won about 2/3rds of the trophies. They had a class for "Best Mopar" Who won? Some guy with a Javelin AMX that was not as nice as about 30 real Mopars. I laughed it off and considered the source of Judges. Could have been worse though, They could have picked an Oldsmobile.

Ah, I love hearing all this whining and caterwauling about cars shows. :) It just so affirms my decision to walk away from all the presumptuous nonsense that so many people bring to them. Now that I don't give a rat's *** about what anyone thinks about my car, and have a car that is meant to impress only me, and that I don't see as being a crown jewel but rather a car, car shows are so much more fun!

I've taken my car to three shows, and because I'm not acting like a dick, and have a car that's interesting to talk about, and willing to spread my happiness with my car to others, I usually don't have 15 spare minutes to go looking at all the new cars, ricers, or other cars I used to deem unworthy. I'm busy talking to one visitor after another after another. My poor wife had to go into super learning mode after the first show because she was getting saturated with questions for the better part of six hours... poor girl thought car shows were all about looking at other cars and reading magazines to pass the time. :)

And I also no longer have to fret about making "Please Don't Touch The Car!" signs, or going bonkers because some little kid touches a fender, or some hottie rubs her jeans on the door. My car is a driver. I know none of these things is going to hurt my baby, and I'm too busy talking to be constantly circling my car with a bottle of insta-shine and a rag waiting for the next particle of dust to land on it so I can go into cleaning mode. :) Seriously, if I wanted to spend the day cleaning I would have stayed at home!

And then there's the trophy chasers. You gotta love them, especially the ones who say it's about their love of cars and not the trophies, but then just about screech their wheels out of there the second the trophy ceremony is over. :) These folks are so obsessed with every detail of their car, and so obsessed with what everyone else brought to the show, and so obsessed with impressing people who had NOTHING to do with their car!

To me, car shows are nothing more, and nothing less, than what you choose to make of them. If you're the type of person who sees their car as a beauty queen, who wants no one touching it, or wants to see no defect on it; or someone who is constantly judging themselves or their car based on the judgements of others; or feels what they feel is worthy is what all others should feel is worthy, then you're probably never going to get the joy out of going to shows that you should be.

I know there's lots of guys who view car shows like a job, and they're the security detail, cleaning crew, competition analyzer, and CEO. They like judging the merits of others while simultaneously hating being judged by others. And they spend their time after the show bitching and whining about every fingerprint they had to wipe off, how other cars had no business being there, and how they would have fared better in the judging if so-and-so hadn't brought this-and-that to the show. As for my wife and I, we go home and laugh as we say "did you hear what that one guy said about the time he had a Roadrunner in 19..." or "did you see that kid's reaction when he saw the...", or "how funny was that guy when we told him...". Speaking just for myself, I like what we take away from car shows a LOT better than what the more obsessive members of the breed take away. :)

so, I had this guy (the expert judge), he was wearing a NASCAR fire suit with cowboy boots and a FORD hat sitting HIGH on his head!.... (He was about 5'4" tall , without the boots)......he picked my car apart and gave me 1's after a short "discussion" with Sonny.:thebirdman:(so I gave him a 1)

About 450-500 cars in the show...I took "Peoples choice award" I really was thrilled due to THE PEOPLE and other CAR guys chose my '63 and there had to be 50 mustangs, 50 camaros 20 GTO, yadda', yadda'. yadda......THIS is the way do work this type of small community show, (smaller city)

....2 bands and the place was packed when I received my award .....

sorry for the long story, it could include much more to it...but I don't want to bore you guys...

out of my 15 awards, this is the one I cherish....

with all the beautiful cars here I feel very humbled, Respectfully,
Sonny

and yes, I did stick it in the face of that judge...---->I did it for all MOPAR's guy that get snubbed!

btw, yes I do want a trophy, I would be lying if I said it was not the main reason for being there.

:icon_thumleft: good for you :headbang:

I don't go to car shows, or at least enter my car in the shows. I do go to cruise ins and more casual get togethers. I heard all the time how, "I wouldn't bring my car here until it was fixed up, had nice paint, etc..." My car has factory paint wearing thin, some rust showing, and some rust holes. But I've put in the time so it runs, drives, is dependable, and I LOVE TO drive it. So I will take it to any cruze in I see or feel like. I bought the car to drive, and drive it I shall no matter how it looks on the outside. All my money and time has been spent on work that no one will see from the outside of the vehicle.

What really bugs me is when someone looks at a car next to my 63 and rubs their butt on my car while looking at another !! The other week these guys and gals decide to set up their chairs behind my 63 and when I came over to my car one of the girls has her arm resting on my trunk and I hate when people lean all over my car. So I jumped in the and fired it up and reved it hard. Then I pulled out and parked in another spot. The guys gave me dirty looks and I gave it right back. I was so mad I think I would have fought all 4 of the guys at once even with my cane and all. Its hard for me to clean my car with all my knee and back problems and I dont like people getting it marked up when I put alot of work into it. And people should have rspect for others cars. Ron

Two years ago at the Woodward Dream Cruise, my buddy and I returned to his 70 Challenger to find an Eastern Indian family sitting in his car--two kids in the back seat, wife in front with the father remarking how nice the car was; unbelievable!!!

What makes me crazy, and dislike most car shows is the DJ/music. Why do they have to play 50's music as loud as they can get it? Usually what happens is they park you directly across from the speakers and you cant hear a damn thing all day.

So where are they buried ?

More and more people are getting tired of this and letting it be known....

A Montana Double date! @ the show!Let's pick up some broads!

I kinda' like the old music....it takes me (an old fart) back!....:eusa_think:

LOL! No doubt. Guess some folks never get over playing with dolls.

Or stuffed animals either...

For many of the reasons mentioned already, is a big part of why I rarely take my cars to car shows, I'll spectate is about it... I don't really consider my car show worthy either, it's a driver/beater, but it's all mine...

I'd much rather race, if I'm going to an event with my car,
I haven't done either in quite a while now...

If it's a Mopar specific or year limited show/cutoff at the mid 70's maybe !!
than I'd probably at-least think about going again...

Even thou I like some newer cars, some are really nice,
they just aren't my idea of "show" material IMHFO anyway...
I know there's the exceptions to the rule too...

Just not my thing...

Personally, I would rather see your car at a show than some mega-buck pile of billet aluminum that the owner has never laid a wrench on. I take my unrestored, survivor, old 64 Belvedere to a few shows each year and usually have a good time. If somebody doesn't like it, that's fine, but most people that know anything about Mopars love it.

I've been to my share of local car shows, participated in a few and I can relate to all the comments that have been made. It is what it is! Some shows are better than others depending on how they are organized and the type of people and cars they attract.
The '50s car owners use to amaze me the most. Not all but a lot, would have a great looking car and clutter it up, inside in out, with dolls, model cars, signs ect. I just never understood that...

I have never taken my car to a show and that is purely because I haven't been able to drive it yet!

I just plan to go check out the cars, hit the swap meet and when I feel like it leave. I don't plan to enter any judging because plain and simple...I could give a rats arse what he or anybody else thinks about how I built my car. It's not stock, its not pro-touring and its not finished...but I sure as hell plan to enjoy it.

This guy nailed it. My sentiments exactly.
