So I was stripping down my supposed 25,000 mile motor home 440 that I picked up getting it ready to go the the machine shop. Im not dumb I knew it wasn't a 25,000 mile motor and for the most part the cylinders arent all that bad. Everything was looking pretty good till I removed the front piston on the passenger side. I noticed a wierd pattern right around the bottom of the cylinder and the very bottom of the skirt looked funny as well almost like missing pieces but the are the same on both sides of the skirt so it looks almost like a defect. Now I am very concerned that my cylinder will not be able to be fixed and im pretty bummed about it I actually stopped tearing it down for the night lol didnt wanna see anymore but none of the bottoms of any cylinders look like this. I will post pics of both front cylinder's and pistons one damaged and one not let me know what you guys think. I planned on completely rebuilding anyways just hope it can be fixed. Its the wierd pattern where the chamfer should be on the bottom of the cylinder I cant even see how this could happen very strange.

I don't see a problem either, especially the fact that you must be boring it, right. It doesn't appear to be in the bore itself.

what would cause that strange pattern do you think it could just be something from the machine that originally cut the bores.

looks like when the chanfer was made (likely at the factory) the tool chattered. likely cause of the chatter could have been a chipped or dull cutter, loose cutter blade, head or chuck or loose work bed holding the block.

You can equate this to the same type of chatter you can experience when using a drill and when you have just switched to a bigger bit after drilling a pilot hole... at the point your just about to start drilling the drill bit touches the pilot hole to slowly and you get the chatter just as the drill bit begins to self center. you get the picture

It's tool chatter and it won't hurt a thing. That engine has very little scuffing on the pistons and very well could be a 25k engine.

Looks like tool chatter from removing a ridge.

well that kinda puts my mind at ease I gotta finish tearing it down tomorrow so I can get it to the machine shop for leaning checking and boring. I have to figure out what pistons I should use first before boring that is so the machinist cant match them up.

It's tool chatter alright. From where a sleeve was installed and then back cut. The cutter was dull or it would have been smooth. Run hell out of it.

Yep, it's just chatter from the factory machining process. Nothing touches that area so don't worry about it. It made it this far, right?

So just when I thought everything was alright I found damage on the ridge on the crank shaft just behind the main seal. I don't think I did it disassembling but who knows there were no pieces that would have went there and the break was full of grime so it looked old. Here is my question what is the purpose of this and should I start looking for a crankshaft it has a cast one now. CRANK SHAFT DAMAGE.jpg

This lip helps divert oil from the rear seal so as not to over load it and I doubt that little missing piece will hurt anything. If I had easy access to another cast crank or maybe even a forged one I'd swap it out.

I wish I did have easy access to another one people are asking around 400.00 to 700.00 for another used one money which i'd like to use toward new pistons to have put on my stock rods. I think I'll have to ask my machine shop guy what he thinks for some reason I think I remember looking at aftermarket shaft and they didnt even have this ridge but I could be wrong.

I'd swap it out for a forged unit (you can find one all day any day for $150) and you'll have a much better engine for it. If you can't find one in your area, I have one.

for forged used ones on ebay you mean

ive been looking on ebay and the cheapest 440 crank I can find is 350.00 i guess i gotta keep looking.

ive been searching ebay for an hour now with no luck if you have some links for these forged crankshafts for under 200 that would be great.
