DOGS

My boy Thor does that every now and then. When he doesnt eat I get nervous but he did have surgery on him intestines about a year ago. He eats when he gets hungry. Hope things settle down for Elvis and you.

Elvis update
he's eating a lil' just people food hardly touches his treats
or any dog related foods
or the Farmers Dog stuff

I got the Vets test results back, clean liver, clean blood & good kidneys
his heart is good/strong, & no heartworms, his ex-rays are all good,
no blockages etc.
the swab of his ear is the same 'yeast crap' since he was a pup...
ongoing stuff

So I'm still in the same place...

He does have like a 'hot spot' on the top of his head, sort of a scrape
I thought it might be a tick, didn't look like it was
been using hydrogen peroxide, to clean & topical ointment cream on it...
I think he poked himself on the barb wire/hog wire back fence...
may take him back in have the vet look at it, I think it's nothing really...
I was 'Just thinking'
maybe something tick related, like lime disease (?),
I maybe be grabbing at staws
But we do have a crapload of deer around here,
I do see some deer/s with ticks all over them in the heat
& they (like 10 or so) sleep just on the other side of his back fence,
but he doesn't have any real symptoms of it...
I haven't found any ticks on him ever 'yet'...

He seems like he has more energy NOW,
just not eating dog food
he does eat some chicken & leftovers, cleans our plates/human food
breakfast, lunch & dinners

I asked the dr. about the dog virus going around, mentioned earlier
she said;
no indications of it, she knew about it too
& that nothing showed up in his blood, urine or ear swabs
to lead her in that direction...
She said if he did have it, they "usually" run their course in like 3 weeks
it's like 3 weeks today I think

He does like pasta, hot dogs, some potatoes/French fires & chicken,
he loves beef (as long as it's not fat), still will only eat a lil' bit
especially when I hand feed him
for some reason not rice so much now, he used to gobble it up
vegies rice & chicken that was a Sunday treat

he'd barely eats or lick our bowls of Ice-Cream/apple pie
the other night
he loves vanilla ice-cream, any ice-cream except chocolate I won't do that
he loves apples too, he won't/wouldn't even eat the apples I diced up
it's really strange

I'll keep trying different foods, he ain't starving, thank goodness
he's just not eating like he should...

Anyway, thanks for the help & suggestion guys
You could try raw meat.

Wolves sometimes go two weeks without food.
Mine isn't an energetic eater in the morning, she picks out the good stuff and leaves some, but when we get home from 2 hours of running at the dog park in the afternoon, she is ready and hungry. Going for walks exercises the guts and allows things to move better.

Well, I’m sad to report that we had to say goodbye to this sweet old girl yesterday. Such a great dog, a rescue that we raised as a pup. The kids wanted a dog, I wasn’t sure, but I knew she was going to be mine when she came home with the family, it always happens that way. 15 years of the best life a dog could live, and 15 years of true love between her and I. I had a dog when I was a kid, but she was my first and only dog as an adult, and she taught me to love all dogs, and opened my eyes to what wonderful creatures they are. She was a gift from God, now gone back to live with Him until I see her again. RIP sweet Bella, your empire is safe now. See you soon good girl!

I'm so sorry!! I have met a lot of people in my life and the ones I trust the most are the ones that can cry when this day rears its ugly head. Speaks volumes about a man's character.....
Friendship is the only beast that's never known to bite until its dead.

Thank you, my friend. I know that every pet lover out there has faced this day at one time or another, and although it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, the 15+ years I’ve been blessed with far outweigh the pain of seeing her take her last breath. She was there for me everyday of our time together, and I was not going to miss our last day together for anything in this world. I will be able to move past this, but I’ll never get over her. Now the evenings seem hollow, where we once shared our time walking and enjoying life, I’m left with trying to fill that time with something as meaningful as our time we spent just walking, and sniffing. There must be some damn good smells in this world, to just stand there with your nose buried in the ground for minutes on end, just to get a sniff. Dogs are very special creatures, and I never miss an opportunity to meet one if allowed, and just give them a little love. Funny tho, I feel a little apprehensive about petting a dog lately, I just don’t feel like it for some reason. We shall see what this day brings, I’m heading to Lowes, and there is always a lot of dogs there on Saturdays, I hope I get to meet one and give them a pet, although I don’t know how I’m going to handle that. Sorry for the long winded post, this is all much harder than I thought. Peace brother, and to all my dog loving friends. Please give ‘em all a pet for me!

It's not long winded, it's therapy and much needed. It's been a few years for me and I still miss our dear friend and smallest family member. Holding her when she passed was a moment forever locked in my memory and soul. I'm fearless in business and come apart at the seams when I see a dog with sad eyes. Those of us on this thread were built to love. Thanks for sharing and Godspeed..... Ulli

Yes it is very hard to say goodbye to a pet that is there for you all the time. One has to think of all the good times!
We are still thinking about getting another pet.
Our conundrum . I am not very mobile, so my wife will be exercising the dog. Can’t see us getting a pup. So do we get a dog that most likely out last us and hope someone would look after it??? Or get one that someone can’t keep anymore? Hope we outlast it.
My wife walked Casey over 1000 miles in 2022. We had Springers since 1980.

That one always kills me

I cried like a baby when I had to have Mopar put down. She fell asleep in my arms.
I can't even read this thread without tearing up, thinking about her.

Sorry sorry to hear........

Yesterday marked one year of us adopting Dutch.
Her second birthday was the 11th. Proud of how she's become part of the family, excited for the upcoming hunting season. So I kept a wing from her first pheasant (I let her eat the rest) and dried it out, decided for the occasion to make a shadow box. I'm not good at this stuff but I like it. I also got my Woodie back from 2021 Friday, can't wait for my Bufflehead.

We feed ours a raw diet, they make it with all the nutrients they need. We sometimes add raw eggs with shells, whole sardines, fermented goats milk and the magic ingredient is colostrum, it's been amazing what it's done for them both. My wifes french bulldog has auto immune and after the switch she was back to normal and chased the Amazon guy down the driveway. It did take her about a month to rebound but she's doing great and only takes 1/4 of her meds. Good luck

Vet;
Took blood & urine samples & did ear swab, skin allergies test
his temp (up the ***) was 101*
it was 99* the last time he was in
both are well within the norms of 99*-102* for a large breed dog
she looked at his paws
he had a growth he licked & split open
that they removed that was ingrown hairs, between his toes
the last time he was in there,
everything they did looked normal

he was acting normal for a vet visit, had all the normal energy
he took a treat from the vet, I told them about me hand feeding him
& he won't eat his milk bones, dental treats or Pup-peroni's
he normally loves
or eating his dry food, even a different brand my sister feeds her dog
neither dog would eat it in my laundry room
she asked him a couple of commands, sit shake lay stay etc.
he did it like Johnny on the spot, tail wagging & alert
checked his teeth said;
they are looking really great for a 9 y/o dog

nothing obvious, it was making her & me baffled

they will do some further test,
on the blood & urine & allergies swab too
but when they initially looked at it under the microscope
all seems fine & normal no issues jumping out at them

he had some discharge out of his right ear
he has a bunch of it in that ear always
it's been managed since he was a pup, cleaning & occasional flush
been doing it regularly...

She had said;
"it could be lingering from heat exhaustion symptoms"
since he had it before

they didn't know why
he'd do the late at night limping/dragging the foot on one leg
next day he was fine
& a next day later it was the other leg, same exact symptoms
she was baffled, after she poked & prodded
then said;
nothing seem to bother him & his joints look great on the ex-rays

she looked in his eyes & ears, pretty much normal
nothing to make her worried

I will know more when they get the urine & blood test/s back
but, they gave him a good bill of health

I'll try a different dog food,
maybe he just doesn't like the old one
& try a different place to feed him too
not in my laundry room by the washer & dryer & garbage cans
maybe something is making him feel sketchy in there,
hasn't for 9+ years
or any of my other dogs either over the years
I'll try it...

I've been hand feeding him chicken bits I cooked up
I tried white rice & chicken too, in his bowl
he wouldn't touch it
he gobbles up, anything you put in his bowl normally

But;
If I hand feed him the chicken bits, he'll eat it

I know I know, it's a bad habit, should do it :blah:
& he eats food off our "human" food-plates after dad's breakfast,
my lunch (I don't do breakfast) & both our dinners
but not with the gusto he normally does
he usually cleans the plate
he leaves a bunch on them now
Also, it's not that much food
maybe a cup, a cup & a 1/2, maybe 2 cups max
between all 3 meals
nothing that's bad for him either
we've both owned dogs our whole lives

he pees & poos normal, he's not getting skinny yet
drinking plenty of water

acts relatively normal outside

I've told her (the vet) all of that too
they are baffled, he acted 110% normal in vets office
like nothing is wrong at all

thanks for the questions & showing concerns,
I'm baffled
