Engine rebuild on my '67 Coronet 500 - 383 4 BBL

Got some great news today from my mechanic mate..

The machine shop has inspected and tested my block. No cracks found. They also determined that the reason we saw some bearing movement on the number 2 crank journal is because it was slightly out of round from factory. They are able to machine it back to specs.

So the block will now get line honed and resurfaced decks.

They will bore .030 and we will use .010 cam bearings.

So things are progressing nicely.

Lots of cool builds to follow at the moment .. great for the winter !

Looking forward to you progress Tek

Also curious about the copper coating on those rods .. surely someone has seen that before and can shed some light. In the meantime I'll do some searching to see what I can find on that and read up on these Garlits heads

After searching for a while I found several references to the factory or engine rebuilders using copper coating to get rods "in spec" or tighten up clearances if they were a bit to large for a proper fit on either the big and or small ends

It was a Ma Mopar resizing thing. They did it to rods that they thought needed a few thousandths more tolerance.

Can't wait until you start putting the motor back together. Those heads and cam will really make that 383 feel a lot more like its big brother.

I am hoping for that result.. :)

Cool project Tek, I like the fact you found out more info on your numbers matching car. Copper clad rods, never knew that, very interesting. We want some test vids of those cutouts too!

NICE!

Guys an update on the Garlits heads

I have been told that they come with REV valves, REV 2.14 and 1.81 stainless steel, and the springs retainers and keepers are Manley.

This sounds pretty good to me, what do you all think?

You should have your machinist blueprint that block's decks. But - they have to be careful NOT to disturb the ID pad on the right side dech surface... It's very difficult to get static compresion from a 383 using any commonly available piston because the blocks are so tall from the factory. IMO - the cam is probably too large for your needs and I'm not a fan of buying for noise. The Garlits/Sidewinder heads should be a modest improvement of the 516s, and lighter to boot. Paint everything and it will look stock. The 383-based 496 I did last summer took 1st place in '70 E body Stock at Carlisle... It also makes over 450hp at the tires through the stock exhaust manifolds...lol.

OK so some progress made with orders now in for the first components.

We needed pistons and rings ASAP so I have now a set of Speed Pro Forged flat tops and their Plasma moly ring set to suit.

I also ordered an Eddy Performer RPM manifold and Holley 750 Ultra DP with electric choke.

Now I am assembling the other parts and will order them soon.

OK BIG orders are now in.

I am going with a 2.5" Pypes Stainless X pipe system, using 2 of their Race Pro stainless mufflers.

I have QTP electric cutouts, and the QTP stainless weld on pipe sections, plus their stainless turndowns. Plus their remote activation system.

My Hydraulic Whiplash cam, and 9 key way timing set (Progear true double roller with hardened gears, US made), plus Hughes 1.6 ratio roller rocker assembly set, and thrust button are now ordered.

My Don Garlits Alloy heads are now being fully ported to Level 2, plus they are building out the heads with valves and springs before they ship them. They are matching the specs that Hughes gave. Bruce Toth is doing my porting and building the heads.

So things are about to get interesting.. :)

HI, I had considered them as I knew they look pretty stock. But I am going to rebuild and keep my original heads too, which takes care of originality if I sell the car. But for the performance, I think those garlits heads tick the boxes, one of the major ones being that they are made in USA. ;)

I am so glad I'm not the only one who chooses American made............ aren't you from down under haha. I used the Pypes X pipe kit on mine too and really liked it. Sounds like a good build.

Yeah just about everything I have chosen is US made. Down Under I could have found great Aussie made parts too, but the shipping is a killer.

Glad to hear about your Pypes system, I was wondering what the sound will be like. I hear the X makes a higher pitch than a straight H pipe.

Hi Tek,

I put a 2.5" x pipe Pypes system on my 70 Road Runner with a 383 (The Pypes headquarters is about 2 miles from my house).

I am very happy with the system and the sound. It has a nice throaty V8 sound without being obnoxious, and the sound at 40 MPH or so is really nice too. I haven't had the car up to speed yet, so I can't comment if there is any highway drone. My car is being restored so there will be about 3 more months before I get a chance to find that out.

Very useful info mate! Thanks.

I have heard that the Pypes are not 'prone to drone'..We will see..

No matter, I will attempt to use the QTP's as much as possible. ;)

One additional thing I just remembered.

I did do one "modification" to my X pipe. When you get your system, look "through" the X pipe. Since it is built from cut and welded pipe, mine had a little bit of extra pipe on the inside that I ground away to maximize flow. It might not make any difference at all, but it made me feel better :laughing7:

Yeah funny you said that. I read that on another forum about a different brand x pipe. SO I had filed that away as something I would look at. I guess this happens from the bracing they normally use on x pipes?

Pistons and rings showed up at the front door today!
