Hi guys I've got a noise coming from my 74 Satellite. The engine is a 318 and the transmission is an A-518. The noise is RPM dependent, it is a pulsing noise starts with slow intervals. Kind of a WAaaaaaa................WAaaaaaaaa.......... and a rpms increase it becomes a WA..WA..WA, harsher and faster intervals. The noise also is a companied by a vibration and isn't really noticeable until over 3000 rpms. Any ideas what this could be? I thought I used the right torque converter for my 318. reallllly hoping its not engine internals...? Help!

Have you seen your cat lately? :D

Could be any of the following - universal joints, transmission mounts, lack of fluid, loose transmission, bad bearing in the transmission, flat spots on tyres, noise could even be coming from the rear end and transmitted through the transmission.

You can try narrowing the circumstances down a little more by slowly running the car up to speed in each gear and noting if the noise/vibration cycles in at the same rpm in each gear. If so it's probably something in the engine/transmission. If it cycles in only at a particular vehicle speed then it's probably something from the back end of the transmission (such as rear bushing/worn yoke) to the differential or tires.

Follow AR67GTX's advice and let us know, there's so many things than can cause a vibration that you really need to start by narrowing it down. A real common mistake that can cause a vibration is using the incorrect snap ring on the universal caps, putting to thin of a clip on the cup allows side to side movement allowing the shaft to spin off center. Also make sure your tranny yoke is engaged deep enough and not too sloppy. Good luck

Does it do it sitting still, in park or neutral, increasing the rpms? If it does, that could be the tq.

Sorry should have said that, it is definitely RPM dependent not speed. Once my transmission shifts it becomes quieter, Its barely noticeable below 3000 rpms but I believe yes it does do it in park as well. Its pretty much done this since day one.

yes the engine does do the vibration in neutral and park. Id say its actually worse out of gear. Does that help with ideas at all?

You might start with checking your plugs and wires? A dead or missing cylinder can sometimes be hard to hear and cause a vibration. From there you just need to start checking motor mounts, tranny mount, confirming you have the correct balancer, flywheel, torque converter, etc. Good luck
