Family Tradition

Still pegging away on the bird while the engine's coming together...Heads are at B & B racing for the bowl/port work. Block is at Appleton Crank getting a line bore this week. The 512 is starting to shape up.

Anyways..odds and ends, won't waste anyone's time showing pic's of washer bottle and horn installs ect..ect..LOL. But ran into a few things that might be important to some down the road.

1st........Aftermarket headlight hardware kit (from R/T Specialties) vs. AMD fenders.

Here's the box nut/fastener that pops into the front of the fender for the headlight bucket mounting. On the metal portion of the fastener there are teeth that must be popped past the opening to lock in to place. I do not know if it is the fastener that is offsized and the fender is right or the fenders holes are too small, but they do not fit without modification.

Hole for the fastener in the fender before modification .470 length wise. Trying to pop then in using the butt side of a hammer handle, I could see the entire headlight bucket face begin to bend in. So, used a small flat precision file and opened the opening up. Came up with a magic measurement of .520 Still enough to hold, wide enough to pop them in.

Another thing to bring up....Blasted the Headlight buckets. Galvanization was breaking down on them and rust was forming. Anyways, thought I would bring up that headlight buckets are specific to each location. Sure they'll mount in any spot, but you may end up with a lamp that will only install upside down or off key. I found out the hard way years ago so I figured I'd bring it up. Clean up the buckets and look for numbers on the outside lip. You'll see like "HI LO" or "HI" indicating if is a bucket for the highbeams or low's (HI-LOW is low beam on these cars). After that you'll a "LT or RT" (Left or Right).

Sprayed the buckets with Cold Galvanized Paint and installed. Throwing on a reference pic as well considering the service manual does not show it very well at all

Brand new set of Doug's Headers showed up Friday....Real nice Quality! I'm impressed. Hopefully i'm still as impressed when it comes to installing.

5-2.jpg

Rear ends pretty much wrapped up. Isn't much fun installing a rear bumper/brackets by yourself, but is what it is and had to get done. I'm glad I modified the the Bumper indents on the AMD quarters. The bumper might have fit on, but i'm guessing it would be rubbing or really really close. Trunk lock, trunk seal, tail lights, reverse lights are all in. On thing I am missing is the glass housing for the license plate light. Have the bracket/bulb housing but the glass housing is long gone. Anyone have an extra..please let me know.

I had a 68 that I scrapped are they the same, if so I'll look. P.S the 68 would have neaded every peace of metal available including frame rails and then some, that's why I scrapped it.

lookin great! I need to get new headlight hardware for mine. be going on my original fenders.

When you get the kit Basket Case, I'd be interested to know how well the fasteners fit. Getting the springs in is a real treat. Do yourself a favor and bend out the last 1/4" inch of the springs so they'll turn in a heck of a lot easier.

Will do you need the glass housing that is about 2" and domed at the end? if so let me know and i'll will put it in the mail asap. Call me if i am offline for faster corespondence.

Thanks Roger! I've ran into a bit of confusion with the lamp/housing. When I got the car the bumper was long gone. In a box of parts, I have a bracket with a round 1 1/2" hole in the center. Two screws hold the wire, lamp socket assembly and what looks to be a glass lens (missing) I'm guessing the lens would be about 1" DIA and have a shape similar to a runway light. Is that the right assembly/Lens?

In another box I found another lens/assembly. This one is rectangular and about 2" long. I cannot figure out how it would fit.... Any pic's of what assembly I should have Rodger?

prop your RR is looking very good , I had time on my hands last night when I got home ,out of the fluke I picked up another old hemi , but that is another story ,well I went back and re read all your post on RR ,sure took a long time well worth it, also picked on some things that I had over looked the last time ,very very nice job you did and I mean it, you took the extra time to do it right,in the past I would see customers bring there rides in that they thought where ready but yet so far away you ought to have someone edit your whole post into a booket or DVD ,great job my friend, thanks for sharing your long project with all of us,it was well worth it . :eusa_clap: :icon_salut: :hatwave::headbang:

I actually ended up putting the horn in the windshield washer bottle...toss in a little Dawn and now I have one hell of a bubble machine. Things just got nuts..

Yeah I went with the bare headers and they're 2" indeed...No sense in choking out the stroker. Don't know weather to paint or wrap or wrap/paint the headers yet, but wasn't gonna fork out the extra dough for the coating. If your headers come as nice as my turned out you're gonna be pretty stoked.

you need the second lens

Hey thanks guys! I appreciate the kind words. Been a long haul, but taking the time to cover all the bases and build it exactly how I want it will make it even more worth it when I finally get to turn that Key. If you take a look at all the information on the member restoration threads on FBBO, compiled them...WOW, you would have one heck of a mopar resto recipe book. I'd be proud to toss in my 2 cents. Think i'm up to about 600 pic's or so in the roadrunner file. Gotta find someone with the Clerical/organizational skills to chapter them all together.

Thanks again guys!

thanks prop , well the million dollar ? are you gonna keep it ,I would hope so ,to me seems a real keeper ,whats going to be your next adventure , a 70 GTX ? :headbang:

Just looked at mine and it is the first one.

Thanks for the call Roger! Nice talking with ya...I'll PM over those Coronet pic's. Very nice of ya to build that. Think I'm gonna start calling ya Saint Roger..lol

Sir......If I get lucky enough to make it to the great pearly gates, i'm not going in unless they got parking for my Plymouth!

'70 GTX...That would be Number One on the list.

Just my 2 cents on the headers. I would not wrap them. Header wrap holds moisture and will allow the headers to rust. I tell you what I am going to do with mine. I got some VHT high heat paint. Not the standard 1200 degree high heat paint. The 2000 degree paint. I got primer, flat aluminum and clear. I'm gonna try painting my own.

prop you no better than that I'm no sir I work for a living hahaha , one of my friends just gave me a call seems like he just found a 68 gtx in the area that's been in a warehouse 35 yrs or so that is coming up 4 sale ,wonder what shape that one is in and what type of money it is going up for

LOL! I hear ya.

That '68 sounds like one heck of a find. You know, I don't know if it's a curse, but I can never seem to find the cars like that. I find the ones that have been in a corn field for 35 years. Hope the '68 pans out! Without a doubt that would be neat to see.
