Finally got a lift

I have been pondering doing a shed/shop, 20 X 30 with 9' tall ceilings.. If I did 10' walls with vaulted trusses would that give me enough room for a lift??

That's exactly what I did. 10' walls and scissor trusses in the one bay. Its 15' to the peak. Run your garage door up the rake so it clears a car in the air.

I went one better...14' walls on my 32x48 shop. ;) The difference in framing costs to go from 10' to 14' was about $1500, yes I payed a bit more for insulation, drywall, siding etc but over all probably looking at under $5K total to go that extra 4 feet. And with 12' doors I can pull a commercial truck or large Class A motor home into the shop if the situation required. And up north where I live having a shop with high ceilings and large doors will net me more in return with the property value when I eventually have to sell.

LOL, I have to put a stop somewhere on this project... It was a 10 X 14 metal building "storage shed" that Hurricane Irma smashed with a tree... I was going to put up a larger shop elsewhere on my property but at my age, 65, I just figured I wasn't going to use it that much as I want to travel the USA while I can.... So I am downsizing the shop at the "storage shed" site..... Having a LIFT would be heaven though...

Paul, go with a free standing 2 post without the top cable crossing, you're just giving up room there. My shop is 10' 3" to the ceiling, my lift posts are only 9' something.. I'll measure them later and let you know, possible you can just stick the extra couple inches into the ceiling. I can walk under my cars, even the Bird with it's rear wing and I'm not lifting them to full ceiling height as I have a light tray in the way.

Wayne that looks like a good quality one . Did you reinforce the concrete in the garage I have heard you must , also was thinking 4 post for storage to get the car off the ground and park summer stuff underneath during winter months do you do that with the 2 post as our cars are unibody ?

I have over 6" of concrete in my shop, but unfortunately the expansion cut lines are close to the left/drivers side post and my floor cracked with the wifes Sport Trac on the lift when I first installed it. Why I trussed the tops after the fact. Not an issue now even with a 3/4 Ton x 8 ' box GMC on it. The Bee spent most of a year+ on the lift, not a big deal being a coupe but I wouldn't want a hardtop up there that long as the gaps certainly open. If I win a lottery in the near future, I want a large 4 post that clears the 9' door opening and 20' long to store the Bird up top and Bee underneath, so that I have a work bay again + the 2 post hoist bay to work on day to day **** like my Daughter showing up with a flat yesterday and working on the plow truck etc...

How wide an area do you need for a lift?

12' will do it. Mine is 11' 6" at the widest point. It is nice to have room on the sides to walk around and adjust it.

And damn I am excited! The days of wrestling transmissions on the floor is over, I am just too old for that. I designed my garage just for this day when I built it a couple yeas ago, even had them put 3'x3'x12" footers where the lift is mounted when they poured the slab.

Direct Lift DL9 delivered and installed today. Took them about 4 hours. I will wire it tomorrow.

I did the same-thing to my floor when I built my shop. 3’x3’x12” with lots of steel bar where hoist sits.

Best money you can spend!!

If you’re doing new construction I’d definitely go 12’ walls for the small amount it would cost you. Then install a bunch of 8’ LED light strips to finish it off.
