I’m no foundation expert, so forgive my question if it seems stupid.

Doesn’t that rebar cage go into the ground?

Yes, 3" off the bottom, and 3" for each side . . . completely enclosed for maximum strength . . .

Here's a picture to indicate the plans . . . they are raised above so that they can be tied together with the wire . . . after that, they'll be dropped into the trench . . .

The rebar (or metal mesh - probably) on the top going left/right will be the reinforcement for the concrete pad that will be poured - so it'll be tied into the footers too . . .

But this shows how it will be in the ground and then poured . . .

Rain over the weekend put me on a hold - but I got the last of the rebar pieces cut for the far end . . . ready to be installed . . .

Only thing I noticed . . . I need to widen the trench closest to the old shop and is will be the base of a 2 story shop, and that requires a 16" wide footer, not a 12" wide . . .

So I've got some work to get the corrected . . . but I want it done right . . .

Nice job! At least you didn’t hit ledge. My garage is on top of a mammoth piece. I ended up pinning the foundation to it with rebar. I’ve had several Great Danes over the years. They are characters for sure. Still miss my first, Joshua, 180lb black. He was awesome!

Check with your local electrical inspection and see if you need to attach a piece of cooper for the electrical service if separate from the main service to the lot. Some areas require a ground to the reinforcing steel.

Finally got back to the rebar, and got it all tied together . . . and now it's time to start framing the slab . . . and get the footers poured . . .

This is going to cost some money . . . thanks to lumber prices . . .

And . . . what I thought was "pretty level" . . . is not even . . . this could get interesting . . .

The metal sticking up is just in place to help hold the rebar frame centered in the trench so I could figure out my alignments and my framing needs . . . they will get pulled once the concrete is poured to make sure the rebar stays centered like I want it to be . . .

Past the halfway point, luckily this was all scraps that I had around the house so far . . .

Hope to get these footings poured next week, and got a guy lined up to help with the pad . . .

Drops off 6" on the far side . . . but It'll be that much more foundation for the shop . . .

And my little buddy is always within eyesight and helping out on the project . . .

Little more info on my puppy . . . Dane's life expectancy is 6-8 years . . .
Titus is 11 1/2 years old and still doing pretty well . . . but his day will be here far too soon for me . . .

My EX and I had Danes for the 20 years we were together.. ALL of them lived to at least 12 without any bad health or meds......Great Loyal dogs

Well . . . thought I had the layout pretty good . . . NOT ! ! !

But, I spent the day re-doing all my past work and getting everything in line . . . thought I had 2 more 2x6 to finish off the back left . . .

NOPE . . . will get that tomorrow . . .

Even though I worked through the layout and "thought" I had it right, I was off by 3" in the back right corner.
So . . . I had to undo EVERYTHING and this time laid out lines to get it straight - it worked MUCH better ! !

Might actually get this thing done . . . someday . . .

Are you familiar with 3-4-5 ? Or on a bigger scale 6-8-10? gets you a very accurate 90 degree angle..

Very handy indeed . I've used that on everything and usually don't have much fudging to do when I'm done.

Very much so . . . that's what I used to lay it out . . . but I messed up "somewhere" . . . along the process . . .

Oh well . . . it's FIXED now ! !

Spend some time last night, working on the framing . . . let me rephrase that, swam a bit last night, the humidity was through the roof and the darn mosquitos were so thick that I thought they were going to carry me off . . .

But I got the framing all done, and just need some spike driven to hold it all in place . . .

Ready to get the sides shored up, and get the footings poured, . . .

pretty happy with this sight . . . that edge is . . . not too shabby ! ! !

Still working on this . . . but had a little bit of a "distraction" . . . in the process . . .

Had to take care of a "bucket List" item . . .

But still making progress on the shop . . .

Needed to make a trip to Ohio to pick up some lumber - Thanks @747mopar - Devin got me hooked up ! !
First . . . needed brakes to make sure that the 6500 pounds of lumber got home safely . . .

Once that was done . . . the trip was ON ! ! !

Took my truck ( it has 370,000 miles on it ) up to Ohio to pick up this load . . .

Had one little incident on the trip back - the top bundle started shifting to the right on my . . . that top bundle might be about 1500 pounds (or more) . . . so what was I to do on the way home . . . Used the ratchet straps to pull them back to the center (worked great) THEN wrapped the straps around the bundle to help keep it centered for the remainder of the trip (should have done that in the first place)

Glad it didn't fall off . . . THAT would have been a real mess ! ! !

Got some really neat colorations in a few of the boards ( Devin said they'd all just turn brown . . . oh well . . . )

Got home at 8:30, had the lumber unloaded and mostly stacked by 10:30 . . .
Well, half of it, got the rest done the next day . . .

Got the framing done for the footings, even got the rebar cemented in the proper location, just need the concrete pour.
Hope to get it done next week ( or the week after ) if I can get good weather and get on the schedule . . .

Little at a time . . . but we're still making progress . . .

Cost was $90/yd 2-3 years ago . . . Now it's $150/yd . .

Oh, and they're claiming that there is a cement shortage causing all the delays and price increases . . . Imagine that . . .

Now . . . Hope for nice weather so that I don't have to reschedule again - 2 more weeks out . . . Gawd

Just spit balling here but why wouldn't you pour the slab and footing at the same time as one pour?

A vapor barrier covered by gravel can be installed while your waiting for the concrete.

With no inside footer form you can tie the rebar for the slab in now and tie everything together in one pour.

Be sure to add PVC for any electrical work that will need to be encased in the slab...
