Golden Goddess heart surgery

Valve springs changed, head torqued down. Time to hibernate until this evening. Using a 1970 chiltons manual my grandfather bought new. Unfortunately he’s no longer with us, but his knowledge always will be

Forgive me, but I forget if you are updating your cam or reusing it. If you are putting in a new flat tappet cam, I strongly suggest you put a set of worn out, crappy, weak springs on the heads for break-in. Even when doing everything right with respect to RPM, startup lubes, break in oil, etc. I have seen cams fail due to higher tension springs. Springs are really pretty easy to change once you have broken the engine in. The two or three hours you will cost yourself swapping out springs after break in is well worth it (in my humble opinion) to provide extra insurance against wiping your cam.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with everyone here. Learning from actually doing the work makes the knowledge gained really stick with you in my opinion. And of course the pictures are great because this site lives for pictures lol.

Time to marinate the lifters

Well it’s raining off and on, so can’t really do anything with the engine. So I guess I’ll polish the valve covers so it looks like I did something today

I’ve never used Chemical Guys metal polish, but I really like their other products. Please post a review when you’re finished…

I’ve used mothers before, but this stuff is cheaper. Works as good as mothers, I’m probably skipping a bunch of steps because my car is an unrestored driver, so I wasn’t too worried about absolute mirror finish. It put enough of a shine I’m happy with it. And if you have amazon prime, it comes to your door next day

Alright, back on it. The goal is to get as much stuff as I can stuffed in and, on the engine before I remember I need to go to work tomorrow

Do you plan to degree it? What’s the specs?

Inquiring minds want to know…

@Black_Sheep , I don’t have the spec sheet out side with me, but it’s just a Lunati Voodoo 703. Probably should degree it, but I don’t have the tools or knowledge, should be fine.

@Charles Cook , yes I do have plans to fix the gas gauge eventually

. Probably should degree it, but I don’t have the tools or knowledge, should be fine.
Your assertion that it's fine is based on... not knowing if it's fine?

Just sayin

It's like saying the circuit breaker " should" be off?

It's mainly a retarded timing you're worried about. The manual trans might like it at the far end of the tach :D

Edit* ya, I've put lots of cams in without checking in the day*

Oil pan and windage tray on. The gasket sandwich and running low on silicone doesn’t have me confident it won’t leak, but it’s there. And that’s all for tonight, the heat is killing me, and I’m out of silicone. Not all lot done, but I’m not unhappy, I made progress.

(I know the engine is a little hideous, don’t worry about it)

Most manufacturers are pretty good with machining nowadays. So far, the only cams that I found to have inaccurate timing events were Mopar Performance cams. They must have used a LOW cost sub-contractor to grind them.

Alright, with the cam in, and bottom side done. It’s time to work on the top side things.

@Black_Sheep , here’s the specs on the specs on the cam. Just a little bigger than stock hp, nothing too radical

These are going to be happy lifters, they’re going to live happily in their new home, they’re going to do great things :praying::lol:
