How Much HP Can You Get Out a 318

Hot rod did a build where they took a junkyard short block milled and ported a set of factory heads, cam, intake and headers - made 400HP

I was talking to Mazzolini in the tech line one year at MATS - he had his SS/GT Sebring there - Silver w/blue flames (you may have seen it before) 318/904, said it made 500HP. I think the car ran 10.30/40s !!

I will have to see if I can find that build from Hot Rod. Also thats really awesome HP.

Ran the magazine build on my desktop dyno with a slightly more aggressive cam, came out to about 410 hp and about 410 tq (high elevation of 5000 ft). Then I started looking around for crate motors. Found a 415 stroker from indyheads that makes 520 hp and 500 tq. Ran it through my dyno as a conservative 318 stroked to 392. Got a higher hp number but slightly lower tq. Easy way to do this is find small block builds other people have done (usually 360's) and throw them into a 318 with what you figure will work. By the way that 500+ hp on a 392 stroker requires exceptionally good heads, so it would probably cost quite a bit to get them machined properly.

Thank you and I need to get one of those programs for the desk top dyno.

I've always considered the 318 and the chebbie 305 pretty comparable. That said, you can do the same to each and the 318 will flat stomp it's *** everytime. 318s are great engines. Just because they lack cubes doesn't mean they can't be built to run.

Hey, planning a similar build here. Hope these will help.

This build also includes a handy breakdown of what they bought and the cost, so it can give you an idea of what to expect. Also, the newest build I have saved (though if there is anything newer, I'd love to see it so I can save a copy).

Enjoy!

I saw a guy at the track running mid 12's in a 67 Barracuda. I asked if it was a 340 and he said 318 but with 340 heads and the MoPar .528" cam. It's pretty much a small bore 340. Just let it breath.

Yes, those are the links I was gonna' post. Thanks

Thanks everyone and I'm still looking at what I will be able to do with what ever project I get. I also want to add better breaks like maybe off an SRT-8 car or Viper. I'm going to be adding mags to it at some point..maybe. This is going to be an original looking car other then wheels and also be a hot rod. I feel the need to mod something lol.

Just read the article again...:) 406 HP / 408 lb-ft - Stout numbers for "just" a 318

Yeah, I like those numbers for basically a "junker". My son and I just recently picked up a 318 for 60 bucks. We're looking forward to trying to build that motor.

Don't put good money into an engine that wasn't designed to produce big HP. Swap it out with a 340. You'll be happier in the end.

Yeah, since 340's are such a common engine, just "throw" one of them in it..:laughing6:

lol

I just sold my 360 to a guy who spent over $2k trying to maximize the HP from a slant 6. Then he realized after spending all that money that he wasn't even going to get 300 HP out of it, so now he's wanting to move up to a 360 and spend another $1,500+ and hopefully find someone to buy his slant 6.

I always suggest buying the biggest engine you can afford, even if it offers less HP. I can't think of anyone I've ever known who's said "man, I really need less horsepower, so I think I'll downsize the engine", but I do know a lot of them who said "man, I sure wish I had gone with a bigger engine." Why spend a couple of grand trying to get 350 or so HP out of a 318 when you can get 350+ out of a 440 for about the same money, then save your pennies to improve it to 500, 600, 700 and on up if the need arises?

318

You sometimes have to use what you have and 340's are not cheap just to buy one that needs rebuilt.

Sometimes people want to do what they want to do, instead of what someone else wants to do. A 318 and a 360 built the same way, the 318 wins hands down in mileage everytime. With the slant 6, people who build them to try and be powerhouses usually end up throwing them in the ditch because that's not why you build a slant. You build one because they are different and that's what you like and want to do. If everybody stood in a perfect row and drove pittsbird lookin road runners, it'd be a pretty boring world. Everybody's not the same and just because somebody's different than you are doesn't make them wrong.
