hi fellow gear heads

today i am installing a electronic ignition (pertronix billet) . the instructions say to ELIMINATE the ballast resistor. My idea of doing this is to pull off the wires from each prong ( theres 2 ) on the ballast resistor and join them together as to "by-pass" the resistor completely. the instructions ONLINE and the ones in the box does not get into detail.

is this what i should do? im not sure....i dont wanna destroy a 300 dollar distributor because petronix' instructions are not clear.

i am going to leave my phone number on here ( *************) because i wont be near my computer all day (ill be with the roadrunner and my cell phone) and i would really like to discuss this with someone that knows more about this than i do before i go cutting wires and whatnot. any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

thanx in advance... Dave << (thats me)

CANCEL MY PREVIOUS REQUEST.... the distributor gotta be the wrong one. its diameter is bigger than the stock distributor and it is hitting on the cylinder head.. gotta send it back to summit and get the right one. thanx all !!!

I've found the easiest way to eliminate the ballast and have electronic igntion is to go with an MSD 6AL box and a Chrysler electronic distributor.

That way, if you take the car on long trips (I drive all my cars long distances) then you aren't stuck waiting on parts if you break down.

Local parts houses almost all have the generic MSD box and the same goes for cap/rotor/magnetic pickup for the older Chrysler distributors.

I've heard of the Pertronix systems leaving more than one person stranded!

I made a jumper wire with a spade terminal on each end. Plugged this in between the two terminals that were on the resistor. I've run Pertronix stuff for a long time without a problem. I have their billet distributor in my 383 Super Bee and I really like it. I've occasionally heard of an electronic ignition that quit on somebody (different brands not just Pertronix). That's what I don't like about 'em, so I carry the original points distributor in the trunk. With the way I set this up, I would only have to unplug the jumper and plug the original wires into the ballast resistor again. Don't expect a problem but it's a safety net to get home.

I did the same with the jumper wire.

It also make a great anti theft device!

Pull jumper, put it in your pocket and the car won't start!

thanx guys but since the pertronix dist, didnt fit....i opted out of the electronic ignition. im just going to clean up the points dist. and leave it at that. i have been doing so much to this car....its going to be FAR from stock and id like to keep it as close to stock as possible!
