Anyone here do that? Man, it's been rough lately. The only way I've been making any money is in options trading! Hope someone can take an advantage of the recent downturn.....wait until everyone is cryin before doing any buyin!

Yep. Took an @$$ kicking friday and today. Too far under now to bail, so I'll just have to sit on it and hope things get better.

Almost bought today, but thought I'd hold off just a bit.

Did sell some I thought were played out a couple of weeks ago, so I'm pretty happy about that.

Still have the same dividend income I had before, just looks better% today :)

The only people who should worry are those who are close to retirement or those who need the dividend income right now. Everyone else will be fine, it will come back. Now is an excellent time to buy.

Buying high and selling low is the worst possible method of investing, yet everyone seems to think that they need to be out of the market because it is low. And, for that matter, far too many people handle their own investments without the necessary financial knowledge and the required capital to be properly diversified with individual equities (which, in today's dollars, is estimated to be about $1.4 million).

I am already retired and it's just play money. That's how I was able to buy 2 Chargers the past 2 years. Sure it hurts to see the red line going south, but I figure it will either come back, as it always has in the past, or it will all end abruptly and there won't be anyone around to care.

My financial adviser has mine under control - I hope!

My retirement took a small hit..Still got 14 years before I can retire..hopefully it,ll be around then...I think that it will get worse before it gets better..We need to stop giving tax breaks to the rich and we need to put more into the system ourselves...If we keep catering to the rich and let all the corp[orations move out of the country we will never survive...I usually don,t talk about politics on the board so hopefully I did not offend someone...

So when would be a good time to jump in and buy? What would be better ones to invest in?

Going back in

I put 100% of my 401K in fixed when market was at 12,700, thinking about jumping back in if it goes below 10,000. It's definitely going to come back, I hope.......

Lets see "we need to stop giving tax breaks to the rich" and "we need to stop letting all the corporations move out of the country"....
Why do you think these corporations are moving out of the country? Its the fact that the corporate tax rate is something like 40% one of the highest in the world. Why do you want to tax the very people who are creating the jobs? I've never worked for a poor person before have you?
"We need to put more into the system ourselves" Man 41% of the US population doesn't pay ANY taxes... I'm as middle class as they come and that fact really pisses me off! I'm sick of paying taxes while 41% of the people don't pay anything.
We don’t need higher taxes we need to cut spending. If you make a $100,000.00 a year and, always-in debt then you probably need to cut your spending right? We’ll that’s what the government needs to do. Not ask for a higher credit limit on the credit card. That's just plain NUTZ!
What you are describing is Socialism. Tax the rich so the government can pay out. That doesn’t work. Have you seen what’s going on in Greece lately?

Sorry but I’m sick of this class warfare. This country needs to stop the spending and get out of our lives!!!!! It's easy follow the Constitution!

Did you read what KD said? I feel the same way he does. I'm a long ways from being rich and I feel my tax bite is still way too much! My oldest daughter is on welfare along with her POS husband and all they do is play the system. Played us for awhile too until I slammed that door shut....

So when would be a good time to jump in and buy? What would be better ones to invest in?
I don't make recommendations but XOM has always worked well for me....

Yup, I visit there too from time to time. I'm sick of all politicians right now but really don't like this admin one bit.

I see much of the hit has been recovered today, at least in my portfolio.

I did make a purchase- BP. The slump yesterday knocked it down to where it was when I made my last purchase, but didn't have enough cash to buy all the shares I wanted.
Pays out about 5% plus just announced a special dividend of .42 per share.

I just don't see big oil losing any time soon.
(at least until the US government starts subsidizing alternative energy as a method of combating dependance on foriegn oil and a for creating jobs [hey, wasn't that a campaign promise] I mean he already got Bin Laden {even the part about going into Pakistan, to boot} [another campaign promise].

I also hesitate to comment on politics on this car related forum (especailly when it appears my views may be in the minority), but please remember that Obama was handed this economy by the previous administration (who, just for the record, invaded the wrong country looking for Bin Laden [twice, apparently]).

A note for those worried about 401k/403b value- when the market is down, your (and your employer's) contributions purchase more shares- just like buying low.

Wasn't raising the debt ceiling supposed to avert a default, and protect the nations credit rating??? Looks like we got jacked by wall street anyway (again).

At least the 5% BP pays me (and a few other oil/fuel related holdings) offsets some of the price I pay for gas. If they're gonna jack me, they might was well pay me , too.

Just for the record, I work for county government as an IT Analyst/Project Leader.
I make about 52K a year. The latest rant from the far right says I'm under worked and over paid.
The last guy that had a similar job went to work at the hospital and makes 97K a year.
Maybe that's where some of the rising health care costs are going?
If my job were outsourced, it would cost between $75 and $150 per hour.
When I worked for IBM 15 years ago, I was billed at $179.
Plus extra time would be paid for on every project, while the consultants learned our complex envirnment.
-oh, and $380 is taken from my check each month for insurance.

When I started, there was about a 20% salary gap with private industry, and that was made up by the retirement and paid leave. Now it's closer to 40% and the retirement just got cut in half.

YY1, yeah, the Bush admin spent like a drunken sailor but who was running Congress for the last two years when Bush was still in there? Looks like they could have started to do something about the spending back then. Also, why didn't Obama start right away on fixing the economy instead of sticking a feather into his cap with his health care bill? And IMO, the far right is just as bad as the far left.....and as long as the present regulations are in effect, jobs will not be created. The people with the money (ie rich) will not make a move when there's so much uncertainty and the small business man won't take the risk either because of the expense to do a new start up not to mention the costs associated with the new health care bill yet to go into effect. A nephew just opened up an auto repair shop and it cost him 5 times more than he thought it would! He did his research first too but when it came time to buy the permits etc, the city said, 'oh btw, we forgot to tell you about the new fees that just went into effect plus you now have to have permits for this......' etc etc etc and the list got long. He almost didn't open because it was going to cost too much but he had already made a substantial investment and didn't want to throw all of that away. Dealing with any level of gooberment sucks and is only getting worse!

Btw, this is in the general discussion/anything goes forum, right.....

Man, you sure fell for that class warfare crap. Do yourself a real favor sometime and look up the facts, not the Liberal sound bites. The top 5% earners in this country pay well over half of the taxes. Half of the population pay nothing at all. Look it up!! The last years I was working my wife and I started bouncing off that magic threshhold that Osama considers the "rich". For years before that I started watching, not only the tax rate on my income go up into the 30+% range - but the typical deductions that everyone else could claim started to disappear too - because I made "too much money". The "only" deduction that I was ever able to take in the end was the mortgage interest- even the individual personal exemption for dependants starts going away long before the $250k threshold is reached. Kids college expense - nothing, IRA contributions =- nothing, healthcare = nothing etc. etc.. This loophole crap is all a big lie, there are no loopholes for working people!

The reasons businesses are moving overseas - our corporate tax rates are some of the highest in the world - if not the highest. Plus our businesses have to contend with more regulation and red tape than anywhere else in the world. Do they find some loopholes to avoid some taxes - sure they do - the ones the government has created - but they still pay more tax than other countries even if they "find" the loopholes.

Sorry to be on the soapbox but this overused and completely false, class warfare crap really gets to me. The "fair share" Osama talks about has a guy who has worked his *** all of his life and now enjoys the rewards of the
"American dream" making $1M a year paying $400,000 in taxes while one making $75,000 pays nothing. Is that really "fair"?? I used to buy that crap 35years ago too thinking the "rich" needed to pay more. After a 35 year career where I finally started to make good money I found out just how unfair our current system is. Thankfully, now I can stop working 80 hours weeks, traveling 6 days a week to fund all of the governments give aways programs and collect "MY" social security, that "I" paid into all my life and let someone else fund this crap!.....:angry1:

Fair tax - everyone pays a flat 18% or their income. If you only make $10,000 a year you only pay $180, make $100,000 you pay $18,000, make $1M you pay $180,000 - at least that is somewhat "fair".. No deductions or exemptions..

Sorry again for the rant. I usually don't talk politics here either but this blatent lying that is going on really gets to me and no one (like our newsmedia "protectors") even makes an attempt to give people the facts and truth.:angry1::angry1::angry1:

I agree Stumper. People need to quit listening to the main stream news media (Fox included) and start doing REAL research! Then and only then will the real truth come out. I had some decent deductions and a very moderate income last year and still gave the gooberment 4400 bucks. I'm thankful that I have a good tax guy....who btw, doesn't like the flat tax plan. He says too many making money under the table for that....ie Chinese restaurant owners. Pay attention to how they run the register if you visit any of those but the small business owner just about has to cheat if they expect to make any kind of money. Pay attention to furniture rental stores too. Those places almost always carry two books....one for new furniture and one for returns that have been re-rented.

Wow, I sure hope your white sheet is clean. And as far as old hippie goes, it's run by a loud mouth phony who people think knows something when all he does is shout out opinion as fact.

Everyone has their opinion....I know the guy personally and I also have my opinion of the man but a phony he isn't. While I would never work for the guy, I have to have respect for someone that pulled himself from nothing to making something for himself and did it the old fashion way. The guy wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth by no means.
