Id like to see some nice wiring jobs , and advise. My alternater wire grounded out on the exhaust manifold, and burnt the insulation and in some places it burnt other wires,, it burnt from alternater to the fire wall and under the dash ,, it looks bad ,,..The wiring is a mess all the way around , what I mean by that is, that its been cut taped ,, every where ,, a few things dont work,, there are wires that dont go to anything ,,Where do I start?

x2. I hate to say it, but you are asking for more trouble if you don't.

Budgets are always an issue, but it sounds like you need at least the engine harness and under dash harness. Yes, they are expensive, but try replacing the whole car because it burned...

I will once again get on my soap box about fire extinguishers. Don't know if you have one or not, but you got lucky. You could easily have had a fire, and in that case a fire extinguisher makes the difference between wiring damage and a total loss....

Thanks for the rely , ya I was thinking relace it all,, I dont mind pulling motor, tranny, ect anything but wires man I hate electrical work

I replaced all the wiring on my 70 Road Runner. It seems really daunting but the only hard part is the dash wiring. For example, for the underhood wiring, lay the new harness next to the old. Then find all the connectors and where they go before you touch anything. Then, once you start, go from one end of the harness to the other, moving one connector at a time.

The same concept is true for the under dash wiring, except there is no way to see anything. In my case, I took out the instrument cluster. I took a picture of EACH WIRE as I took it off. I also marked the old wires too. Once the instrument cluster was out I was able to work the new harness in like the underhood description above. Finally, I replaced the instrument cluster and reconnected the wires using my pictures AND the marked connections on the old harness as a reference.

It really wasn't too bad. I think this is a job where the best way to go fast is to go slow and methodical. If you rush it, you will get yourself in trouble in a hurry.

Almost all of my headaches with older cars has been wiring that's why I just replace it all anymore. If you buy the factory replacement style like Year One sells it shouldn't be hard at all.

I been thi king all day about rewiring. Hsorman , thats what I needed , ya 747 your right ,

Get wire by the spool in a rainbow of colors and gauge at least a gauge larger than factory and replace all the connectors drill out the firewall connector use bullets replace anything that are slightly deformed sodder heat shrink.... its a lot of work

My Mopar has free wiring diagrams. I used the heck out of them.I bought my car as a shell and had to figure everything out.

This what im starting with, under the dash more worst

I had never done any wiring beyond adding accessories until last year when I rewired under the hood of my '65 Coronet. I did post a thread for it which you can see on my profile but several of the photos didn't load.
It's actually not that difficult if you break it down into individual circuits such as starter circuit, charging circuit, ignition circuit, main power feeds, lighting harness and accessories such as w/s washer, horns, electric fan.
If you want to upgrade your electrical system I would wholeheartedly recommend reading everything on Mark Hamilton's MAD Electrical website and then deciding what you need to incorporate.
I did the MAD trunk mount, start'em up, new system, headlight and fan relays and ammeter bypass. The difference is significant.
I posted a wiring diagram on my thread.
I would suggest that you simply remove each wire one at a time and record them on a diagram. You will find that there will probably be redundant wires, duplicated wires and connections and splices all over the place.
When you remove the old wiring, you will have to figure out what the hell the previous owners were trying to achieve and this will increase you're understanding
You will also have to devise modifications if you have non stock parts or upgrades and this all helps to increase knowledge too.
On your new diagram, just add each circuit back in one at a time either stock or with upgraded mods.
Crimp, solder and heat shrink everything.
The cost on my Coronet was about $250 with all the MAD upgrades and cable. I have enough cable left over for my other Coronet which I have just started and it doesn't seem anywhere near as daunting, although I have sought advice on this forum because there were differences, but someone is always here to offer advice.
Good luck

Agreed with what everyone's saying, just buy new harnesses and rewire the whole thing. Definitely the safest way to go! But whether you that or make your own harnesses or whatever, I'd strongly recommend buying one of these laminated full color diagrams, they're cheap and I use the hell out of mine :icon_thumleft:

Like gottagettamopar said, once you look at it as individual circuits, it gets easier to make sense of the entire system. The MAD electrical site is a big help too

Everything's still a little sloppy since I haven't finished cleaning up my voltage reg/ballast bypass, and nothing's secured in place yet, but here's some pics of what I've done with everything in my engine bay

I was paranoid about burning plug wires so I got these looms from a buddy of mine

Made my own battery/starter/relay harness to keep it a little cleaner

I'd post a pic of my wiring but it's all mostly hidden haha. If your feeling ambitious you can buy a universal harness from someone like Ron Francis, American Auto Wire or Painless that would be a definite upgrade from the old school harness's but it takes a little more thought than just plugging it all in. The plus is you get rid of the old glass tube fuses and gain some versatility with added circuits and best of all you can customize it to your liking.

Making the engine harness is cake you don't have 20 wires total. Remove the entire dash harness, it's not that hard. lay it out cut the tape. Replace whats bad. or replace each wire one at a time. tape it up and install. The only thing I would change is A #8 wire directly from the alternator output to the battery. Get the diagrams and get familiar before you start. By a good set of crimpers. The terminal are cheap. If you really want to get carried away you can hide it all. How much do you see here? Everything is there, horn ,lights, except wipers.

I've rewired my 70 RR in less than 2 days. And that was very limited working time. Year one harness was pretty much plug & play.

I bought one of those laminated diagrams recommended by Mr Speedfreak. Makes life simple. Get the largest one and make sure you get the right one for your gauge cluster, whether standard or rally.

I use the 40 some year old, copied a million times, unlegible, cropped, pasted, black and white ones that are like a children's maze game gone horribly wrong, and need to get what Speedy and themechanic recommend.
