My 1967 Belvedere Convertible Plans and Restoration (aka - Mad Scientist Build)

I personally feel like safety glasses welcome eye injuries at least for me. I can't count the times I've been grinding and I feel something hit my face, bounce off the inside of the glasses and then into my eye (almost all of my eye issues come with glasses on). I just try to buy ones that are more like sun glasses and hug the contour of the face better.

Ive had the same happen to me, but these are the ones i have on most of the time, so far im safe anyway..

Yeah lucky enough I haven't had anything get stuck in there. I have had the same thing happen but the piece never got stuck. Hope your eye feels better.

I'll get you one ordered up Kahn...

Usually it's the die grinder cut off wheels that get me w/safety glasses. Amazing how much a 7 minute eye doctor appointment costs.

Now that's REALLY cool . . . Better get me (2) of those prop, then I'll be sure not to get anything in my eyes again ! ! ! ( smile ) LOL

Fixing the shackle installation procedure . . .

Now that the hangers are fabricated and mounted, it's time to get the shackles to install . . . so here's my plan of attack. I know the whole frame can be removed, but if a small piece of the frame is removed, then the shackles will be able to be installed just fine . . .

So here's the plan of action on the "old" frames and bushing tubes . . .

sm_drminitubwork21.jpg

You can see where the old tube has been cut out, and I'll have to clear out a bit more so the shackle will fit through the opening, but I think this will work.

I was AMAZED at just how little welding was actually done on that tube into the frame section . . .
the new welds are at least 10X what was there . . . should make a great big difference on the car.

Think I got it figured out . . . fabrication under way . . .

Think I finally figured out what to do . . . and the "fab" work is under way . . .

Got the area cleaned up for better shackle installation . . . new metal tacked into place . . .

sm_drminitubwork22.jpg

And a little more welding done on it . . . I see a couple holes that'll need to be touched up after more grinding.

Guilty as charged ? ? ?

Spending the day grinding/welding?

No rest for the wicked...

LMAO . . . Yeah, I guess you got a point there . . . trying to make progress on this so I can have it done before I'm old(er) and gray(er) . . .

Guilty as charged ( probably the wicked part too ) . . . What can I say Herr_Poopschitz . . .

I did take a break to cook up a 4th Feast with my daughter . . .

sm_ribs.jpg

YUMMY ! ! ! !

Good progress on the car and the ribs! lol

Thanks coronet340 . . . the ribs are done ( and were delicious ) . . . but It's going to be a "little bit" longer on the Belvedere . . . ( smile )

Great fabrication work there man, and ill be honest, im getting hungry now lol.. My wife and i were alone today and we didn't do the bar-b-que thing as we've been doing that a lot lately, BUT, seeing that picture kind of makes me want to make something and its 115 AM lol.. :)

Spring relocation installation completed . . .

Got some more time in the shop today, and focused my attention to correcting my shackle installation miscalculation . . .

First, here's how the notch in the old frame will assist with the shackle installation . . . provides clearance to get it installed.

sm_drminitubwork24.jpg

This is how the shackle will attach and hang wit the leaf spring . . .

sm_drminitubwork25.jpg

And, for the first time, the leaf spring and shackle is back ON THE CAR . . . these are the old ones till I get my new ones . . . but they work ! !

sm_drminitubwork26.jpg

As of now ( excluding the need to buy new shackles and bushings ) the spring relocation installation is completed.

Oh, and there is a little more grinding that could be done to clean up the look of the installation . . . but we're there !

Great to hear Kahn, one more thing out of the way.

I bet that's a good feeling getting it out of the way, Dang good work you did with this!! :)

looking good khan, your getting alot done doing this all by yourself. cant wait to see this come together.

Thanks USARoadRunner . . . very much appreciated . . .

Heck, I'm not doing it all alone, I've got my Keebler Elves ( post #8 as a reminder ) and all the great guys/gals from FBBO supporting me on my build ! ! !

Doesn't get any better than that !

House stuff sidetracked me for a couple day - concrete work . . . UGH !

I'll get pictures later, but I had some concrete work that needed to get done and completed before they come and pour the other side of my carport floor . . . so I had to get this done.

Got a couple measurements on the spring relocation and I was very happy with the results . . . here's the spring movement tale of the tape . . .

sm_measurefr1.jpg

And here's my new measure on the leaf spring tabs . . .

sm_measurefr2.jpg

I've moved the leafs in 4" on each side, so I think I'll shorten the axle by 3" on each side to help with the deep dish look I want.
When we re-weld the brackets back on the axle, this is the new hole center that "should" match when we move them in 4" on each side - a double check.

Oh, plans are to head up to 747 Mopar this weekend, see his ride in person ( I can't wait ) go for a ride in that beast, work on the axle narrowing, go to a car show, maybe make a trip to Summit and check them out . . . should be a blast of a weekend ! ! !
