My 68 Charger - A Work In Progress

Last 2 days was busy fixing things up.

Installed correct reproduction wires from https://www.lectriclimited.com/. Wires are great but as I have headers was a little hard to get the boots on and keep the wires away from the headers. After a bit of adjusting I got them in and away from the headers. I like their product but my only issue is that you cannot order them in custom lengths. The only wire that didn't fit was the coil wire as my coil is on the inside fender & too far away. As I had some flat black high temp paint, I just sprayed it to blend in with the other wires. Took it out for a nice drive afterwards.

Today the wife & I took the car out to a vineyard to do some tastings. Car ran fine & went we got home I thoroughly cleaned the inside to get ready for the warmer temps. Also took the seat back covers off to see if anything was inside. Snapped some pics of the assembly tags.

Had a special delivery today! Bought this orig. air cleaner from a fellow member here, now I can get rid of that ugly chrome one + the
orange pie tin my eBay site.

Busy day today but at least it was a beautiful day to be outside with just a light long sleeve shirt. Went down to the local auto parts store to p/u a air cleaner gasket. Got home put it on and then began to clean up the console. After 6hrs, had it all back together and then went cruising!

Seeing it's was a nice day today & tomorrow is going to be raw & rainy, just a little project today. Took out my old coil, cleaned it off & spray painted it Black, like the originals to save myself some money.

After taking car of a few other projects around the house, my wife & I went for a nice long drive.

This evening I got under the care to snap some pic's of my gear tag. As I was scraping away some crud I noticed the # 9 or 6 on (Guessing a 9) Anyone have any ideas what the II mean? Also I highly doubt this is an original inspection mark but would love to hear from the experts.

Also assuming it's a 9 is that the casting # for 1969?

In reviewing some additional info I see my 383 vin has the H Code. I have the 383HP version. Was the HP not stamped on the pad in 68 or for 383's? Based on this is my 383 considered the 383 Magnum?

The 9 is a casting mark and not related to the year.....

It appears in the pic the pumpkin was painted black and the yellow II was placed on top of that.....If thats the case then it is not a factory mark.....All pumpkins were natural cast........

The H code only tells you it is a 383-4. It does not tell you WHICH 383-4 came in the car (this is a common confusion passed on by VIN decoders). A 68 Charger did not get the 335 horse assembly. It got the 330 horse with either transmission and with or without A/C.

This changed in 69 and 70.

A stock 68 Charger 383-4 would not be considered a Magnum.

Another reason why I hate headers......running plug wires properly.......

Looks like an octopus......You may want to look at some of the threads here and buy some proper holders for aftermarket parts aka headers....Maybe down the road you can ditch the headers and go back to a factory exhaust setup and use the correct loom brackets....

The hood safety catch and catch is originally black phosphate and eastwood sells a spray version that works well.....The hood latch bracket is painted body color.....

Great dates......look correct for the build

Is that an adapter on the power steering gear box? The piece between the coupler on the shaft and the box......

The federal mogul pump looks right for a 68 BB but why is the hose up against the battery tray?

Yea, headers are a bitch. Wish the wires were longer as it's pretty tight. At some point I'd love to do that.

Not sure about the coupler. Can you circle the area your talking about. The hose isn't right up against it, probably the shot angle.
