My 68 Charger - A Work In Progress

Roger...you sure have been busy....Great to see how much your enjoying the car!

Hey Guys, things have been quiet as no new projects just driving around & having a blast.

Today decided to clean up my fender tag as it was coated with many layers of paint that you couldn't see anything.

Hey all, really haven't done anything projects in a while and today it warmed up to 40*, so decided to start a new project.

Years ago a PO installed pop rivets as well as doing a sloppy paint job on the upper crossbar. I ordered the correct bolts from R/T Specialties (thanks Mark, aka Richard Cranium!). Drilled out the rivets and as luck would have it the old threading was still there & the bolts went in just fine.

After that I went to work removing the old paint & I think a nice coat of primer & then 2 coats of satin Black will look just fine.

I gotta figure out how to get the entire upper cross bar out but if it's too big a project then, I'll carefully tape everything up and cover with plastic and paint with it in place.

Well it's been too cold to paint so my son & I went over to the auto paint store today & got all of my supplies for when the temps hit 50*.

In case you haven't read my entire thread when I touched up my paint chips the shop used a camera to match my paint. As my car is PP1 the system came up with Nissan Rally Red, 1980.

The upper cross bar will be painted Semi-Gloss Black, which I'm told is the same a Satin Black.

Once the day warmed up I went out for a nice drive to keep the battery charged as well as getting the internals all warmed up with oil.

Come on spring!

Bought a set of NOS 4001 high beams on eBay for $28.50 that included free shipping. Was able to back the car out to install them today after shoveling the driveway.

1st I dipped the clips in lemon juice to clean off the old crud/corrosion, then brass wire brushed and dipped again. After that I dipped them in hot soapy water and then dipped in clean hot water.

Looks like 1 bulb has been on the car since it left the factory, not sure on the date code for the Westinghouse. Is there any use for the old bulbs?

Feels great to have all 4 lights working again!

Nice and sunny today & warmed up to 43*. Clouds have moved in & temps are dropping in advance of the 4" - 8" of the white stuff we get tonight & tomorrow am.

Put down a base layer of bondo and let it harden. Came back later and sanded it and still had some low spots which I filled in. Next weekend another round of sanding hopefully if the weather cooperates.

Keep up the good work. You are Taking care of one flaw at a time. Soon you will have a flawless car.

Was only able to get a few hours in yesterday but sanded everything down. Now just need the temps to warm up so I can prime & paint. Hopefully next weekend I can get this done as temps are supposed to be in the upper 40's / 50's.

Been dying to get this project done but had to wait till the temps were at least in the 50's. There was a little bit of a breeze so backed the car part of the way out of the garage.

Well today was the day to complete this project. Began by sanding the top coat of semi-gloss black to make a more smooth surface. After that gave it 2 more coats & let it dry.

Taped off the crossbar as well as covering with plastic. Hit the 2 sides with PP1 let dry & then 2 coats of gloss. While that was drying cleaned up the bolts & hit with phosphate. Once done was time to remove all of the tape & reassemble everything.

When I was taking everything apart I had to remove the 2 nuts on the drivers side fender as one of the orig. bolts had snapped inside of it, so I had to drill it out. I was thrilled that I was able to hold the nut with a channel lock so that I was able to tighten it up as well as the lower one.

I'm very pleased with the results and there are a few more spots to touch up but tomorrow it's supposed to rain so I took her out for a nice long drive.
