Need New ECU

What the hell is predestination

LOL - I always wanted to travel back in time

Pre Ignition Detonation - That sounds better

Anyways what distributor you running with the Street Fire ?
Predestination is the belief that you have received salvation at birth since god is omnipotent and knows the future. But no that isn't what I intended. I was trying to type predetonation. Autocorrect turned it into a religious discussion.
I originally ran the Mopar electronic distributor but now I run a locked out msd billet. Both run well.

Thank You. I'll order from Rick. $38 shipped vs Jegs $46 shipped.
Ordered and shipping the same day. Nice service.
I think when I get it I'll install it and put the orange one back in the trunk

P.S.
Does the blue box use the same ballast resistor?

Hey guys, my car failed to start. Swapped in my back up ECU (Orange Box) #P4120505 and she fired right up. Searching for a replacement and they all say "Discontinued", "Unavailable" or "No Longer Available". WTF? Anyone aware of this? Do I now have to go with the blue box? I assume that the only difference is the RPM rating?

Before anyone suggests it, no I really don't want to switch systems. I just want a back up that I can plug n play if needed.

On a side note, after the 3rd attempt to start (I thought maye the float bowls where dry), it stopped cranking abruptly. I found the negative battery post and connector very hot. New battery (12.56v) and good clean, tight connections. Maybe normal, but seemed odd to me.

I have new original 1975 Electronic CU for sale I can get a photo of it for you.

Don't fail? You tell me! 3 Chromed boxes in a row in 2 years! LOL
I've heard the chrome boxes were race only and would get too hot and fail with normal use. I have orange boxes in 3 vehicles and have had no issues. Guess I'd better knock on wood huh? On another note, I make sure they are properly grounded. (less than .3 ohms)

I don't have a subscription, can you summarize?

And I Quote

We made it Ford Tough with Mopar stuff

LOL

Anyways

Ford 514 Big Block

They basically took the motor and started out with a points distributor , wore out spark plugs , junk wires , and a old coil to get a baseline - Set there dwell

Basically the motor on the dyno started misfiring bad 4500-5200 RPMS

Then they changed to pep boys cheap spark plug wires - No change
Then went to new Autolite spark plugs - Actually went a little worse

Then changed to a Blaster 2 coil - Again no change

Then they dropped in a MSD Distributor and decided they wanted to use a Mopar Orange ECU Ignition Box - New spark plugs wires

Interesting - Motor ran great all the way up to 5700 RPMS
They where pretty impressed , and said they always liked the Mopar boxes

But finding a good one that works was talked about
Mopar Chrome and Gold

Anyways

However they kept doing baseline testing , timing , carb , etc. and the more they ran the Mopar Orange ECU the worse it got on the Dyno

RPMS consistently falling off lower and lower to the point of misfire around 5,000 RPMS

So then they opted for a Napa Echlin Chrome Box (Probably a Standard LX101) and they said problem fixed

Back to perfect performance and no misfire on all runs up to around 5,700 RPMS and consistent

Then it was on to the MSD 6AL - 2 Ignition and E Core Coil

Bang - Perfect all around up to 6,200 RPMS peak HP - Zero issues up to 6500 RPMS

648 Torque
633 HP

They never talked Ballast Resistors

Interesting note - From 0 - 4,000 RPMS on all these ignition systems and corresponding changes

Honestly nothing really changed on the dyno as far as numbers - Everything was pretty much the same no matter what they changed from points to a MSD Ignition Box

All performance gains where pretty much after 4,500 - 5,000 RPMS and up

Update.
Well the orange box is out of the trunk and back on the firewall. Ricks "Most Reliable ECU Money Can Buy" lasted less than 2 years (579 miles). Time to find a new spare.

View attachment 986791 Never left me stranded in 45 years...

EXCELLENT RESPONSE AND INFORMATION....my preference is the Prestolite dual point but the Mopar single point unit works almost as well. Just remember the old Confucius saying: "Fancy gizmos don't work and if they do work they don't work for long and will stop working at the most inopportune time and cost the most dollars to fix"..... Just my opinion of course...

Forgive me for the double post, but since I posted this ECU "failure" in 2 threads, I though it only appropriate to follow up in both threads.

Maybe I was too quick on the draw.

I emailed Rick (on a Sunday morning), not even expecting a response, but got one. He said he has sold about 2500 to Jegs and never had a return. He asked for some details and then took the time to have me check several things. After the 4th email, he had me check the reluctor gap. I almost blew it off because it ran, although it was always a bit hard starting. Found the reluctor gap to be larger than the .008 spec'd. Readjusted and it started with the orange (spare) box. Reinstalled Ricks and low and behold IT STARTED. I never would have suspected the reluctor gap.

Not only did he help me trouble shoot it, he even offered to "do whatever I thought was fair". So as I wipe the egg off my face, I want to give Rick a big . He's a stand up guy and I'd highly recommend him. You just can't ask for better costumer service than he gave me.

We got into this pretty hard on FABO. We have a member retrofitting them with 4 pin GM hei's and was pretty surprising what differences there are inside. Some have just a chip, quite a few have false transistors on the front, bad potting material that let moisture in etc. The older Mopar ones are pretty consistent. Big clue is what is on printed on the transistor itself. RCA and Motorola and Prestolite I believe are real ones. Any thing else either false or junk.
