need some thoughts on right stroker combo

So Gregory, would it be possible to use a 400 block to build a stroker pushing 600hp with lower compression, what would it take and any info would help, thx

I'm planning on a 400/512 stroker combo. I'm in deep enough to not reverse course (bought the core engine, intake, ignition, etc, etc)....but if I did it again I think I'd use the 440. I have found the header selection better for the tall deck, and the taller deck means a longer rod to stroke ratios are possible.

I don't think you can go wrong with either for a street engine, but if it's full tilt the taller deck may offer more options.

I haven't looked around at many piston manufacturers, but 440 Source has reverse dome pistons with a "D" shaped dish. They deliver a 9.24 ratio when used with an 84 cc Edelbrock head. This ratio would sacrifice some power but almost guarantee that you'd be okay running on any grade of gas. Even with my limited engine experience, I'd prefer to be closer to an even 10 to one. I would think that Ross, Diamond or any other top piston company may offer something like I am suggesting. If I found $2000 in a coat pocket, I'd pull my engine and install a set of dished pistons. I'd replace my hydraulic flat tappet with a hydraulic roller cam and an adjustable valvetrain. It would be nice to NOT have the fear of cam failures anymore.

Regarding the 400 low deck build, I have found that many guys actually prefer that setup.
My understanding is that to get to 600 HP with mild compression you'd need properly race ported heads, a single plane intake, big headers, a top notch ignition system and a carburetor with a razor sharp, optimized tune.
