New "garage" in the works

So sorry for the mess up and delays RC/DH . . . but what I don't understand is why is it that you hear all kinds of stories ( like the one you just shared ) when the house building is going on and you rarely ( or never ) hear of things going very well, ahead of schedule, and under budget ? ? ?

SIGH . . . it just doesn't make any sense . . . Glad to hear that you're on the home stretch ! ! ! anxious to see the final product ! !

Thanks for sharing . . .

So sorry for your misfortune, why does this always seem to happen? Need some update pics please.
I feel for ya, I'm facing a simple bathroom remodeling and I'm ready to fire the GC. He is always here and says he's gonna start, but nothing.
I hate doing this crap, even if I'm good at it.........HGTV should be outlawed!
Guys should not be picking out tile, vanities, faucets, and who cares if it's a 1.2 gal or 1.3 flush........gimme a Holley please

We'll, it's been a tough couple of months. We had the world's worst plasterer who made a complete mess of the walls. The builder kept telling us that the painters would take care of it, but they couldn't. On top of that, the painters were hackers also.

It came to a boiling point a little over a month ago when I told the builder to stop painting as it was just a waste of time, effort and money. To make a long story short, I told the builder that he's got two choices; remove all the trim and sheetrock and start over or get someone in who can repair the walls and repaint all over again. He went with option 2 and the repair/paint crew have been there for the past month refinishing. Right now, they are about 85 percent done and have pulled out for others to get in. This screw up has set us back 2+ months.

The hardwood flooring will go in next week, then the cabinets and remaining trim. Once all that's done, the painters will come back in to finish up. Then it's countertops, carpets and all the other little stuff.

After nearly 3 months of anguish, I'm feeling a lot better now, and I'd like to think that we are on the home stretch. Finally.
Ah yes sheet rocker's. Mine gave me a price, started mine did two thirds of job disappeared for 3 days. I was heating with propane heater $$$$. finishing up mudding and tells he needs more money to spray ceil. Almost kicked his stilts out from under him. Decided I didn't want ceiling sprayed anyway. Wife made him wait 6 weeks and 8 phone calls for his money.

Wow, that sucks. When I built the addition to our house in SC I borrowed the sheetrock and mud crew from a builder friend who built upscale homes. They did a quick, fantastic job. Painted it myself.

Oh what fun to deal with contractors--the more the better...NOT
I have been waiting on any of several for the past 16 months, and have to watch them constanly to head off their screw ups. We just don't have enough contractors in this area...no competition. ...and it goes on and on.....................MO

Of course, all those shows are set-ups. There's no way that you can completely renovate a house in 8 weeks, unless you have everything ready to go beforehand and you have a crew of people working like dogs watch from the get-go. I like to watch those home reno shows once in a while, but you'll notice that each one of those shows has their own scripted formula that they play over and over again in every episode.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. This whole project should have been completed by early fall, but because the builder has a bunch of things going on at once, there's no way that he can devote all his time to one project. And it's the same thing we see with body shops when we deliver our cars to them. It always seems to be the exception when someone comes in on time and on budget.

Until the plasterers and painters screwed things up, we have been very happy with the quality of work that's been done and we kept justifying the quality of the job versus the length of time it's been taking. However, there are things that should have been done and could have been done easily months ago instead of now; the middle of February and that has been extremely frustrating. I describe this project to everyone as being painfully slow and in addition to the length of time this is taking, our budget is completely blown out of the water and we aren't done yet. But, I do see the end finally coming (as far as time in concerned) and I think I have a good handle on what's left with remaining costs.

I've been involved with many home reno projects myself, but this project was way out of my abilities. Knowing what I know now, I would have chosen another builder, but live and learn. But that being said, I don't think that I'll ever get into a whole house renovation or build ever again.

Once things progress a bit more, I'll throw some more pictures up.

You need Tommy Silva and Norm Abrams!

No, I need my head examined for getting myself into this!!!!
I think we've all said that many times in our lives. I said I'd never build another house and turned right around and started building a garage the size of my house..... It's all just a matter of time before you forget about the pain.

Glad to hear it Richard! We have also done some re-modeling, and it seems no matter who you get, it is always a PITA. Except if you can Holmes from HGTV to do the job! Damn glad all the people and dust are out of my house for now.

As a newly retired GC (commercial only) I feel your pain, there are some real ******** out there. Good luck, you will get it done and then forget how bad it was until the next one.

bummer, I'm one of those drywall guys, been doing it for 30 years, I'm also a carpenter on a commercial scale, I've always put myself in the shoes of the person thats paying for it. I bid jobs to do it right and take pride in that, I charge more but you get more, I never run short of work and work for contractors that have there **** together, and homeowners occasionally. there are ways drywall can come back and haunt you forever if the seams are placed in problem areas, we call breaking bonds, floating over areas where large wood comes together, holding board half inch off floors using longest boards as possible, etc. certain taping compounds are made for different applications, and used in the wrong application can cause problems, I figured something was up with you haven't seen many RC comments around ha ha. take some pics and post them, I can tell you if your fucked or if it can be saved with mudding. hows the hellcat doing, got many miles on it?

........HGTV should be outlawed!
I'm starting to think that also....seems like a new 'reality' TV show like this pops up every day. Everyone is an expert these days.

you'll notice that each one of those shows has their own scripted formula that they play over and over again in every episode.
Exactly. My wife loves those shows, and I used to watch regularly to get ideas....but the only idea I get now is that my wife thinks I am too slow on any given task around the home.

I hope your walls and paint work out RC...I hate to see screw-ups like this affect what should be a straight-forward build. I' have had plasterers screw up my wiring on previous jobs....mudding over cabling - completely burying them etc. And as for the "Sheet-rockers" sheeting over cables without cutting location holes..... Not fun.

Yeah, it's good to get ideas from them, but all these shows have some sort of unforseen problem(s) that I swear are scripted just to add drama to the episode.
