Novel Coronavirus Situation Currently (facts, not hype)

I actually called the Pacific North West as a hot spot last week at work.
Remembering that I'd seen a documentary years ago on the explosion of Asian real estate purchases specifically in WA. Some "mcmansion" style neighborhoods were nearly 100% Asian owned, and lots of them were vacant half the year or more.

I don't think I'm going to make it for 3 weeks....

Thanks, but I'll stick with the official federal government CDC site for data; anyone else is susceptible to skewering
data to promote whatever agenda(s).

It's interesting to me to note that the numbers of newly discovered cases in the USA has taken a nose dive the last week
or so. I'm not sure if that's due to different reporting methods being employed by various state and federal health
departments or what-not, but it's clear now that New York state has passed Washington state in total numbers infected.
Nationwide, we're at 4,661 or 3,487 according to what source you trust, but that number has not moved much for
a few days - and New York is almost 1,000 of that, with Washington another 900+.
California is still a distant third at less than 400 confirmed.
USA mortality rate reported is still less than 2%, with the rest either already in the clear or still suffering the virus.

We're behind some other countries in timeline on all this, of course - the virus arrived here later than in some other
countries. That said, the statistics would tend to indicate we're already dealing with it pretty well and the numbers are
slowed to actually declining now.
It just takes time; since they have no cure, that's all we can do is wait it out, but given the statistics, the response has
been both a) faster than the other countries and b) in my opinion, overblown to a degree.

The numbers simply don't warrant the level of societal shutdown and media frenzy we're seeing.

"The numbers simply don't warrant the level of societal shutdown and media frenzy we're seeing."

Maybe the one has effected the other. Some times you have to hit people with a hammer to make them see a little better. Difficult to fix stupid.

Perhaps. We're in a muddy situation as far as that's concerned for sure, not ever able to be proven one way or the other -
but, would you not agree the level of media hype and frenzy, coupled with public and government response to same, has
NEVER been anywhere near what it is with this particular virus than it was with say, the bird flu, the swine flu, SARS,
any of those?
It's been ridiculously overblown in the media.
There is a reason for that, far beyond any "public service" aspect.

Don't know, and that's the problem. Is this strain different than the others, time will tell. I look at Europe and wonder if the hammer will drop here, or if we get on the bandwagon and stay away from one another we won't see those numbers. Maybe some people need to be scared. The bars are full, people think they are safe if their young. Are they? Who the hell knows knows. We will see soon, I'd rather heed the message. I'm not panicking, I've been tested in life before, I just cautious when so many knowledgeable people tell me to be.

No I did not. This years flu shot isn't for the strain that's going around. And that's the way it usually works.
The two times I got one within a couple days I was deathly ill.

But you missed my point.
Thousands die from th3 flue EVERY year. There is no media hype, no knee jerk reactions, no hysteria in the stores, no closing of businesses. Its accepted.

Tell me why!

I got your point. Find it strange how flu shots makes people sick. It appears the death rate is higher for this virus, so much more apprehension.

The death rate my be higher, we don't know because we don't know how many people have had it or the flu.
When tens of thousands die from an illness and its accepted yet we are shutting everything down with comparatively fewer deaths there has to be an agenda somewhere.

i find it amusing how some of you accept the " official " numbers and dis-information being put out there.
keep in mind, there are americans all over this country that are in their homes sick or dead.
they havent been counted....we may still be finding people in April or May....

the hospitals were Turning Away infected people, telling us to " self Isolate "
soooo, how can you believe in figures when you Know not everyone is being reported?

also, flu shots, what they do is give you a tiny bit of the flu and your bodies are supposed to produce antibodies to repel the flu after that so you dont get sick later when the fullblown flu hits.
it doesnt always work like that and is why some of us get Sick after getting the flu shot.

finally,the media frenzy...lol!
you are joking right?
china tried to keep a lid on this, they closed down their entire country and used measures way tougher than the usa ever will.
it Still spread everywheres...
there was no alarm, until this year, even tho there have now been cases found that were from Last year/nov/dec of the virus already being Here in the usa.

so,while some of you call this " hype" i call it a knee jerk reaction to something that should have been reported and handled Last Year.

in the end,Most of us will get sick and then get better.
but Some wont..they will die.
this could be anyone from your parents to someone you dont know.
still think its hype?

and you guys arent thinking long term.
this virus will mutate and come back, because thats what these things do.
this is only round 1.

This was posted by a friend of a friend, but its the best explanation I've seen.
" I found this on a support group I’m part of for medical and nursing.
Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others.
It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.
Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.
Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.
Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..
H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.
Fast forward.
Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”
This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.
And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..
That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.
We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.
Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...
And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do
#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on."

Find it strange how flu shots makes people sick.
Like any immunisation, there is a certain percentage of the actual virus (or modified form of) contained with anti-bodies that are designed to fight what you are being immunised for.

CDC
Can a flu vaccine give you the flu?
No, flu vaccines cannot cause flu illness. Flu vaccines given with a needle (i.e., flu shots) are currently made in two ways: the vaccine is made either with a) flu viruses that have been ‘inactivated’ (killed) and that therefore are not infectious, or b) using only a single gene from a flu virus (as opposed to the full virus) in order to produce an immune response without causing infection. This is the case for recombinant influenza vaccines.

You would not become "deadly sick"

Well the CDC can say what it wants but every time I got the shot I got the flu, when I stopped getting the shot I never got it again..

Same here... Yet every time this comes up we get posts telling us we are wrong....
