Restomod charger pics

sorry to hear about your back, good luck hope everything works out, i got a vibration also. i got to take the driveshaft back out and send it in to someone that knows how to balance one.

I'm sure we'll both figure it out, hopefully ones success can point the other in the right direction. What kind of setup do you have? I seem to remember yours having a big joint at the tranny.

Good luck with your back and the surgery . Great job on the charger , that thing is is a sweet ride , you should be proud of your work ,,,, I AM !! Oh, also , I hope you find that dang vibration ,,,, man vibration diagnostics can drive a fella nuts

Thanks, I'll keepafter it until I find it.

LMAO! Now come on I don't pack that many around. Plan of attack? I've been thinking about it and I'm pretty sure I'll do the surgery like CoronetDart was talking about. It's an outpatient surgery that takes an hour where they shave off the bulging part of the disc and remove the spur. I need to get the details on restrictions, down time, etc before I decide on when to do it because I just applied for my passport for you know where. I guess when you look at the MRI there's just no way around the fact that there's a serious issue that isn't just going to disappear.

I would greatly appreciate it if anybody with a 68-70 B Body (THAT DOESN'T VIBRATE) could measure how far it is from the floor to the center of the slip yoke and where the yoke is as far as left to right going off of the rocker panel pinch welds. I put mine where the old one was but it vibrated too so it's worth s look.

Just saw this now! and glad to hear you're getting the passport sorted out with plenty of time! Kahn will need to do the same if he's making the trip too

Do you still need the measurements I can try and get underneath mine? I saw the videos you posted explaining driveline angles though and that definitely may be the issue

Thanks Goon, I don't think I'll need the measurements now. I know my angles don't match regardless of where the tranny used to be so it's just a matter of finding the time to tackle it since it will mean gutting the interior again. I just wish there was a way of testing the affect of raising the tranny before doing it but there isn't.

Got the driveshaft looked at and it was way off (they screwed up using the wrong thickness snap rings) but still HAD a vibration. With that out of the way I shimmed the pinion up 3 degrees, there's really not enough room for it to be shimmed that much but being very careful I figured I could hit some smooth road to at least see what happened. Problem solved!!!!!!!!!! Now on to the real fix..... Create more driveshaft clearance? Raise tranny tail? Drop motor? None of the above are easy fixes but something has to give, may also be driveshaft option like a CV joint? I believe the issue was under acceleration the springs would allow the pinion to rise (no vibration) and once you got up to speed the pinion would begin to drop causing a vibration and then in coast the pinion would drop even more which is where it vibrated the most but the driveshaft issue was creating the 60 mph vibration making everything even harder to track down.

At least the problem is narrowed down and now you can have a proper solution. No doubt whatever route you go even if not easy it will be done right!

I've got a deadline, Moparfest! No I can't even wait that long, deadline is by next weekend PERIOD. I spent some time under the car looking it over and have decided the trans is already higher than it was from the factory and lowering the motor will cause all kinds of other clearance issues like the headers, fan, shaker scoop, steering linkage, etc so it just makes sense to make room in the tunnel for the drive shaft. The only real possible side effects will be reworking the center console a bit and maybe having to buy new carpet but we'll see.

Had a little help keeping my face clean last night under the Charger haha, he's growing like a weed! If last night was any indication of what this pup will be like then he's a keeper. Got everything gutted, insulation pulled up and ready for more cutting, man do I hope I can pull this off before Sunday (the big local show) but as long as that vib is gone I'll be happy.

Bottom pic is for Keepat, he was curious where my tranny ended up sitting, you can see the lowest point right between the headers and the tranny mount (I think I'm a fuzz lower).

After some head scratching I decided it was easier to remove the whole area snubber plate and all to get my clearance so out it came.

20150624_181734.jpg

Next was figuring out how much to move it so I measured the distance from the axle to the bumpers and added some for good measure and mocked it up on the shaft (as long as it doesn't touch the stick it's all good).

20150624_183442.jpg

The bend in the reinforcement plate made it where the floor would have to be raised enough to interfere with the rear seat so I put it in the press and smashed it flat. With that done it only needed moved up 3/4" so I trimmed it off and test fitted it.

I didn't get a pic but I sliced the tunnel about 16" forward of rear set area and think it's good to go, everything should easily clear now.

Very happy with the results, I did a good enough job marking out the cuts that I can but weld the rear wall in with no filler metal at all and will trace the wedge shapes once the panel is tacked. Once this is welded and ground smooth only a true Mopar nut will know the difference.:headbang:

What sucks is tomorrow things are going to get busy at work followed by classes Fri and Sat so I won't make the local car show in town but as long as I'm cruising well before Carlisle! Hopefully I'll wrap it up Sunday.

As usual 747Mopar . . . you always amaze me with your "creative" ideas for making sure that things fit. You are a true engineer in every sense of the word, and this work looks great. Can't wait to hear the final results and, of course, can't wait to stop on up there and go for a ride !

Hope that our plans to go to Carlisle work out - I'd love to make that show, and to make it your car would be the icing on the cake - first time to the show, and arrive in STYLE ! ! !

I know you'll get it finished up quickly - even with everything you've got on your plate to do.

Getting closer, working way to many hours and been very busy but have been squeezing in a couple hours here and there.

I've found that household insulation works great when working on an assembled car, fireproof, catches sparks instead of letting them bounce around and easily forms to whatever.

My old grade school buddy dropped by to help out.......... he's a bit crazy!

20150628_222559.jpg

Extension welded on on ready for trimming and welding.

Seat area done accept grinding. Yes those are mouse traps, now that I have a hole in the floor I've got mice! I sealed it up and left several traps, death count is up to 3.

20150701_212200.jpg

Got all of the damage from removal welded up on the bracing.

Hi Dev...sorry i haven't been by in a while....nice to see You found resolve and Your work as always is tidy. The emblems i told you about are actually just plastic. so having something recreated in stainless or aluminum(prefer so anodizable) will be the bomb...they are not as tall as i was guesstimating before...only about 4" but a good 12" long.

Any plans of coming west for Bakersfield in October? I'm going to try to have the Fireball's engine done so that i'll be able to take my Pup DanaLoo and the shredding gear, but even if i have to greyhound..i'm going. Just when i commited myself to making project of Fireball, Pete brought home a 63 Stud Hawk GT..289 w/ borg warner 4 spd....i could get in it for a song...it's no derelict...body and paint could be done nicely in a month or two..int good save carpet & headliner material. engine needs love, but beyond that it's all one piece...they are bitchin cars, so i'm wracked in indecision.....actually the two together woud be a killer ensemble.. for a 'period' effect, but no dough for that....yet....some art shows going down so the money horizon could change...had work re[presented in elite auction in cabo that just wrapped today...the same people are showing mev in Newport Beach July 18 and another Newport show in August...so possibilities are there.

Anyway, if i could get the info on those water jetters, i'd be obliged What's happening with Your back issue? jim

I P.M'd you about the emblems but the company is Emblempro's, just google them and you'll be able to look threw their work and get all of the contact info. As far as the back goes.................. it's not getting better, the symptoms jump around from time to time but it's still slowing me down a bit. Got the surgery scheduled for the end of Aug but am still a bit iffy on it, I've gotten to talk to quite a few that have had the surgery and have heard nothing but good things so we'll see.

Post some pics of the Stud Hawk!

Doubt I'll be making any real long trips.

It's looking promising that I'll make it but still not sure, need to get the Charger out and try it out.

Thanks GetX'd, this little mod is really dragging out but I'm almost there. It's all painted up, bottom of car all buttoned up and most of the interior is back in. I still need to mod the rear seat to clear the new tunnel but that's about it, good news is the console went back in with no issues.

10-4 for Stud pics....the fender project with the alternate filler are in 1st prime right now and blocking one out, side by side pics, plus all the process potos will be posted on filler thread after the 11th and i will post some Hawk pictures there as well, plus i'll post Stud pics here for You...There are 2..62 & 63...the 62 is turn key..63 not far from turn key.
Interesting discovery for my purposes on Fireball...i never gave it a lot of thought before, but the rear axle is mounted below leafs..he he...think all i have to do is turn it over and fab perch pads on top of leafs and it will give me a 2" drop, then i wouldn't be iffy about adding a 1" block to bring it to 3" That's pretty painless, but if i want more than that, i can section the boxes that the shackles or leaf mounts bolt to, also moving them closer to actual frame rail. But being happy with a 3" drop won't create driveshaft angle problems...has a good amount of down pitch to it as it is right now....3" should just come close to leveling it and should make a little less load on carrier. pennies from heaven...engine work is going to begin very soon. Good luck with Your Back Bud...good that You are getting all positive reviews on Surgery..got you in my Prayers Dev. Have a relaxing day,,oh yeah...aces that You didn't have to cut back into Your Beautiful console. L8R...jimi

Update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Charger is fully reassembled and back to it's duties of pounding pavement! I did some hard accelerating, some 90mph passes and allot of cruising with nothing but pure pleasure. The 3 degree pinion shim is all that was ever needed even last year too I bet, now that I know I've got it fixed I need to make it more permanent. I've got a set of aluminum shims from Summit in it right now but don't like the idea of something being simply pancaked in there and will but some steel ones that I can weld to the axle (allot easier than messing with the perches). I suspect since I had this issue last year it's been the leafs all along, that's the only thing that could throw off the angle and they are aftermarket?

All the little changes I've made while tracking this down have really paid off, this car is so smooth and quiet (inside) now that I can't stop driving it. The T56 with 4:30s are awesome now with the vibration sorted out, 1,900 rpm at 70 mph and lot's of get up and go but you have to shift pretty quickly. I finally feel like I'm done, got a little almost non existent stumble to sort out I'll tape a vacuum gauge to the windshield to see if I need to try another power valve and that's about it.

Congratulations! Does this mean you will be at Carlisle?

I am now 75% likely to be there as long as the weather holds. I have to install my inner fender splash shields, but they have to be customized to fit since I have the stiffening braces that were welded on under the car. I also have other things, but hopefully I'll make it.

I'll keep an eye out for an awesome looking Charger...

Unless I blow it up before then I'm planning on it haha. I've got a few things to do but they are little things that won't stop me from coming although Larry might have to do some driving............ this clutch pedal is killing my leg (pinched nerves that screw with my clutch leg.. go figure)!
