Surge problem on new motor.

So I put a non resistor coil on and wired the red 12v key on power to the resistor power wire of the ignition switch and I still have my surge! Running the exact same? I pulled the plugs again and number one plug is a lot darker than the rest so I'm going to try a new plug and retest possibly fouled?

I continue to visit this thread but really have not had anything much new to share that has not already been suggested.

But on a re-read, I have some questions on the cam.
1) Can you give all of the cam specs, and supplier and grind number
2) what type of cam?
3) What is your lash setting?

Reasons
A) it seems like your idle vacuum is too low, possibly suggesting a vacuum leak, like someone already suggested long ago.
B) A cam that big really wants 20°+ at idle. Just do that. No need to screw around with trying a couple degrees at a time. Do what you need to get 24° at idle and 36° ish at full advance.
C) Try loosening your lash 6° - 8° just as a trial to see how it runs.

Also, the video sound like a miss, not a surge. Maybe I'm not hearing what you are though. But those two thing are way different

I was hopeful... but I was afraid that wouldn't fix it...any consolation I don't think the resister coil was going to survive long with a msd running it. A suggestion going over it with my brother is go a range colder on your plugs if your switching them. Put more initial timing just like bsb67 is mentioned. If you have more idle vacuum maybe your carb will work the way its suppose too. When the idle screws start working you know your getting closer. If you are worried about your timing being to much , keep your rpms down... or find some high octane.

Ok today I tested the Moroso plug wires I got new for the car and I think they may be my problem I'm getting 126. ohms I tested a old wire from the car and it's 10. ohms. Might be crap wires. Both wires were the same length.

I'm going to add guys I tested the hole set of ultra 40 I have and they are all out to lunch. The coil wire was 60 ohms and all the plug wires were in the 120-160 ohms range. I have old a/c delco from my old chev and a old set of motorcraft from my 5.0 on the car and is running perfectly. Not pretty though lol.

One more thing to add I was talking to friend tonight about the car who is a master ford tech about the issue. He said it's possible that because I had the msd wired wrong running low voltage through the wires that they could of carbon tracked so it might not be the wires fault but I would like to test another set to see.

THAT FIXED IT!! It was the spark plug wires. Brand new moroso 40 racing wires.

I did put the 18 degree black bushing in. So my base timing is higher. I don't want it to high so it kicks back and brakes the starter off it's not fun to change.

That kinda stuff can drive you up the wall! Glad you got it figured out.

You should feel good about solving it...nothing worse than a faulty new part...especially when everything is new!!

My friend was correct. I took the ends off the wires strip them all back about 3/4 inch and reinstalled and retested them. They are all back down to 10-12 ohms.
