Just a dumb question from an old guy— why not collector extensions instead of turnouts? It’s been a looong time since I raced, Jeff.

A very good question! I went with the turn outs to keep the bottom from getting so coated with exhaust residue. I've never run a collector extension yet, been wondering what gains they give?

It used to be a thing to fine tune your headers. You weld a three foot piece of pipe on the collectors, make a few passes. Then you remove the pipe and look inside for where the carbon soot stopped. That's where you cut the pipe off.

I did this back in the day because a lot of others were doing it. Does it make a difference? Well it seemed to die off and nobody really does it anymore. Maybe the header manufacturers tune them the best that they can and it's not necessary. Maybe it was done on unequal tube headers to gain performance?

I have a picture of Bill Jenkins and his '64 Dodge passing tech. They have three foot long pipes on the collectors and the car hasn't made any passes yet. Next time you see the car there isn't any pipes at all?

With the pecker extenstion in place,Take a can of spray paint spray a line on the underside of the pipe from the collector to the end of the extension.Make a pass,where the paint changes color is where you cut it.

Friend has a gold 66 Hemi Satellite , he called his car "Gold Rush" also.. I suggested he get a vanity plate but Ct only allowed 6 characters at the time. I suggested Au RUSH he never did it thought no one would get it. Probably right.

Now to see what Mr Gaines new ride going to do. The proof is in the time slips. This is awesome can't wait to see what the end results will be between those two at the end of the season. Who will be the fastest time, who will be constantly running the faster 60foot mark. Who will have the steady 1320 score. Good luck yo both.

@bearman , Mike Gaines sold his 10.ohs coronet, it 's now in Denmark. His new ride is drop-dead gorgeous, but its got a street motor, (for now, lol).
@malex , are you 9 second legal, or are you just gonna take a smidge of power out?

Very Nice. We haven't had any trouble with the under 10 second police. Sons car has been in the 9's numerous times. As for collectors try them and see. I did, did nothing better or worse. Got mine apart today. No smoking gun yet but I don't see any cracks.
