Decided on Sat. nite the 12th of this month that I have had enough. About 45 years of smoking and 3 good friends dying of lung cancer in the last 5 months, all of which were younger than me. I put 'em down. No pills, No gum, No patches. I just hope I can do it. So far it has been tough but I believe I can make it this time.

Thanks Greg. I am hoping if I tell enough people I will be too embarrassed to start back. lol

Best wishes to you... just remember that you're in control of what you want and why you want it. You have a great motivating factor now... keep their picture close by and when you feel like a smoke, look at their picture.

Just remember that you're doing this for you, nobody else.

okay, sorry... just wanted to give you some encouragement!

Stick in there Jack....You didn't need no damn patches to start smoking....why the hell would you need them to quit???

Hang in there pal. I've quit cold turkey 4 or 5 times. I just seem to be better at starting smoking. Just take it one moment at a time. Use something else to occupy yourself. Toothpicks, chewing gum, lemon drops, masturbating (not at work though, some folks got no sense of support). You can do it.

I did it after smoking 30 years. Buy a lot of tough as hell beef jerkey. It keeps your hand and mouth buzy like a cigarrette. Tastes pretty good with a beer too and thats when lots of people give in. Stay buzy. When I quit if I wasnt doing something I paced the floors. After 2 months the urge finally slacked up.It aint easy. What helped me is my daughter laughed and said I,d never make it. Its been 8 years now. I can smoke one if I go to a bar with friends and not start back now. I have smoked maybe 6 in the last 3 years. When I do I remember how nasty they are. Good luck and if you think youre gonna slip pm me and I will call ya a weakling and tell ya what a wimp you are so you will want to prove me wrong. It helps to have a reason to quit. I know what youre in for.

Thanks Guys really appreciate the support. Daredevil, I may have to PM you for some abuse. lol

You can do it, don't even think about sneaking one and you'll be fine. I quit 4 years ago cold turkey. I beleive it's the only way. Unfortunately lost my wifes mother last August to to Lung cancer.
As you have seen it is the worst sickness imaginable. I used to eat sunflower seeds all the time when I quit, it kept the hands busy. I even kept my smokes in the freezer for about a month until I knew I quit then I gave them away. When I looked back later I found this probably helped mentally because I wasn't worried about running out of smokes. As a smoker you know how your always worried about running out in the middle of no-where. Just a couple of ideas, after a while your going to notice you will have more energy and feel better.

Jack;best of luck! As a frequent quitter myself,I know how maddening it can be. We're with ya on this one.

Daredevil;I like your approach. I may need that "moral" support down the road myself. Going through some rough **** right now,so I don't need the added stress of another attempt at quitting-someone could die:icon_axe:,ya know? No good...

On one of the snowmobile sites I go to,the same subject arose. Lots of discussion about Chantix;mostly success stories. I tried Zyban years ago;if I hadn't quit that,I'd be serving 15-20 for aggravated assault right now. Yeah, gotta love those side effects...

I did it in March 1983..... I smoked the last fag in the pack at 11:00 pm... and concidered driving the 30 mile round trip to get another pack.... I thought.... I can't believe the hold this dirty habit has on me to even think about doing that..... I have not smoked another since. Not an easy thing though... You find out who your GOOD friends are...!!!! A box of milk duds in my shirt pocket helped with the mechanical part of the habit... instead of reaching for that cigeratte I pulled out a milk dud... It wasen't long before I decided I'd had enough milk duds and that ended that...!!

I'm pulling for ya.....

Will.

Hey Jack, Glad to here that your trying to quit. I'm cheering for ya. I've never smoked but I know its tough to quit.
Short story I heard on Johnny Carson as told by Kirk Douglas about his father trying to quit. He said that he was a big Russian man with lots of pride. When he decided to quit, he carried 1 cigarette in his shirt pocket. When he had the urge, he took it out, looked at the cigarette and said. "who stronger, you or me?" and then he would put it back into his pocket.

Good luck

Daryn

I wish you luck! I am sure you can do it.

I know it has to be difficult because I have been trying to quit drinking soda for at least 10 years; but to no avail. :(

Congrats man!! It'll get easier as time goes on.....

You can do it. If I can...you can. I smoked for almost 30 years and quit cold. My young son was the inspiration.

Look at it this way as I did...it makes sense: You will HAVE to quit some day, like when the doctor finally tells you that you MUST. Or God forbid when your failing health forces you to. You will then have to go through the pain of withdrawl, but at that point it may be too late. If you have to go through it anyway, why not NOW, before it's too late?

I don't mean to be insensitive, but your life depends on it...

Good luck buddy! A few dirty ashtrays with a little water in them, for smell, will give you the "yuck" factor that will help alot! Maybe a few water-filled glasses with butts will help too! I'm not joking!
