Waking up the beast

Your vote was already counted. That's why the firecore didn't get installed.

Like spending money? Firecore will do the same thing as MSD, mechanical advance is infinitely adjustable on the Firecore, no bushings to mess with.
I like mine plus it was $100 cheaper than MSD.
Maybe if you planned on an MSD Atomic EFI in the future then I'd say go with the MSD.

:iamwithstupid: It'll be fine for a mid 12 or 11 second car... No need for external Ignition boxes, with the Firecore... I'd read the article Distributor Testing IIRC, sorry no link I didn't copy it, that they did over @ Mopar Muscle, made about the exact same power with it... I googled Firecore Distributor & it was one of the 1st few listed... Disclaimer I haven't ever run one thou... ran allot of MSD stuff & had to have allot of MSD stuff go bad or fixed too

I'm debating whether or not to change at all now. I have a cheap billet distributor From 440 source. Not really any adjustment. I have 12 * initial with 38 total and 12 " vacuum. All in at 2500. Seems to work well as is. Should I change to one that is adjustable? I already have an MSD 6al in it.

Gotta agree with Budnicks on the troubles with the MSD boxes. I don't run it, was going to but all the dirt track guys around here have nothing but troubles with them. I'm running an orange box, figure it it takes a **** can get one at a parts store. Another reason I didn't go with the Firecore Ready to Run.
So your Firecore is the one that will plug into the Mopar orange box?
I had an old Mopar Performance dist, it had no adjustment for the mechanical advance and really didn't want to do the weld and grind method. Was thinking of an MSD but after reading about them your kind of limited on what you can limit your advance. At least that's how I understood them.
With the Firecore there is 2 screws to adjust, pretty simple.
I ended up with over 20 deg of initial, combination of lower compression and old MP 284/484 cam.
Do what you want but I think you'd be happy with the FC.

Thanks for the read, Reed.

I've never ever had a problem with an MSD box. They are in all 5 of my cars. just make sure they all have good dedicated grounds. I wouldn't use anything else.
but what do I know?
MSD pro billet distributors are great

Just for a heads up. My 11.0 blown Volare runs a 25 year old MSD 6T box with ald old MSD oil filled coil. The 9 second Belvedere runs a 440 source distributor and a used old MSD 7AL@ box. I ran 11.70 with the Volare with a junkyard Factory box. Just like the fuel pump hype. My coworker was track champ with his 9.70 Maverick, 460 tunnel ram with one Holley blue pump. Make sure it has enough total timing and you'll be fine.

I have had the MSD box on for 4 years. Track and on the street without ever having a problem. I think the car wants a little more initial timing, but I don't want to advance my total more than it is. Can I limit the total advance with the 440 source distributor ?

I never owned a cast crank motor so NO.
transking 10" came out of my 446 eagle crank ,eagle rods motor, went 11.08 from a 11.74 from just this converter swap.
TransKing from Galveston Texas?

I just found it funny... Figures he has to race you, in the finals, I just thought it was funny/apropos, he get like a 4 second handicap head start & SSR/Blue Dodge ran him down & dumped him at the end too... if you have a 12.38 dial in, running a much faster guy/car, you better be able to run the # that your dialed in at, in a bracket race, especially racing a much faster car...
Last time I raced in competition was in 93 and that was with my /6 66 Belvedere which ran consistent 19.66 (yeah I know....didn't do that on purpose) and went 7 rounds for the win. The final was against a 11.50 62 Chevy II and I treed him (.509/.880) plus he broke out. I was running the number every pass and he knew it but blew it on the line. When I got to the stripe, he wasn't very close so I nailed the brake just to make sure and crossed doing about 40. I love being chased lol

I ran a 10.60 car using a Direct Connection ignition using a cast iron mech tach drive dizzy. It worked fine.

YES, When Transking were the go to converter place. its an older one with no many runs on it.
This converter worked awesome in my 63 Plymouth when it was slow like BOBTILES car is now.lol

So, I decided to use the firecore distributor. I was bored on Saturday as the race was cancelled because of the weather. I recurved it and got it all dialed in. Took the car out on the street and it seemed much more responsive on takeoff. Took the car to test and tune today at Island and was only able to make two runs. The place was packed. The first run was ok, but I had a bunch of stuff in the trunk that I forgot about. When I took off, the tire, jack, tools, chairs and every thing else slammed against the back. I thought I broke something , so I hesitated for a moment and took off again. It ran a 12.54@ 112.74. My bad. The last run, I still had all the stuff in the trunk, but it was already pinned back so I didn't worry about it. I took off this time and spun the tires. I still made my best run yet with one of my worst 60 foot times. I ran 12.24@ 113.10 mph with a 2.017 60 ft. time. Next week a little less air pressure and less junk in the trunk. Sneaking up on 11's.
