Who has MOVED from their home state ? How difficult was it for you?

You're right, but ask him what it cost to license his car every year.
Back 3 years ago, I moved from Mo. to Tx. after 37 years in the state. I lived in the country, I have never lived in an urban setting anywhere.
Property taxes, vary by county. Prop tax on farmland is cheap, some counties sorta charge prop tax as per household, as the majority of tax is school tax. A rural county with more population can have lower prop taxes in general than one with few households. That said prop tax in the rural areas is very cheap. Cost of license vehicles is cheap. Antique tags were about $15 and that is a one time fee, good for life, no inspection required to get one.

While property tax is definitely a consideration, so is cost of living vs. income.

If your cost of living is low, but the local income level for what you do is also low, it’s no different than higher cost of living with higher income potential.

Here in Ohio, our cost of living isn’t crazy and our potential for good income is better than a lot of areas.

3 great seasons and one shitty one (I’m not a winter kind of guy).

I bought a boat engine a few years ago from a guy on Long Island. He does the exact same thing as I do for a living and belongs to his local union (same as mine).
We got to talking and they make 20% more per hour than we do in Cleveland. Sounds great until you look at the cost of living. His house was over 900,000. You could buy the same house in a suburb of Cleveland for around 200,000. When you peel the onion back, we have a much better deal here.

I just axed my son and he said his b-I-l just paid $50 for a fairly new Ranger.
Thats about what I paid for my 92 Dakota. Then add personal property tax on that. Then the high real estate tax.
AL and MS is cheaper by far.

You dont want to hear what I have to say....
First thing, wherever you move to do NOT tell them you are from Calfornia.. Most people do NOT want you in their state/city/county.... Remove anything that says California (including your car license plates) ....
I saw what Californians did to my home state of Oregon ongoing since the late 80's..... Talk about cant go back to Oregon because of housing costs?? Thanks Californians....
I am sure you will want to get personal with me, but this is not personal about you, just what MOST people think.
Read up on the Real estate signs in Portland that have the "NO Californian" emblems on them..
Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Holly weirdo's buying up thousands of Acres in Montana.... All of these areas do not want Californians.... I just read an article on how Austin texas is a Liberal nut job town now due to Californians taking over.. Don't get mad at me, read the article for yourself....
Bend Oregon... I skied there for 20 years ( Mt Batchelor)... 13 thousand people there laid back town... Now between it a Redmond there are over 200 thousand people ( 90% Californians) and any "workers" have to live 50 miles away to find affordable ( barely) living....
Florence Oregon... Neat little beach town.. The kids growing up there have to move immediatly after graduating from High School as they cannot afford to live there due to the Californians buying up all the business's and homes....
Don’t forget many, many people leaving CA are not from CA originally. They moved there for many reasons and are now trying to escape a place they don’t believe in. I don’t blame certain areas being resentful of what is being brought to their areas. I moved to CA because I had to for work - long story - in 1990. I stayed because of the vibrant business environment. Met the woman of my dreams who won’t leave CA so I’m stuck. But I’m not, and never will be from CA. I’m from MN and proud of it. Tried to buy an ocean front lot from an estate in Oregon and they wouldn’t sell to me because I was from CA. I had just moved here and felt bad about that. Not much I could do. It seems as though many of the best people are the ones that want to leave. Don’t reject people out of hand because they’re coming from CA. We’re not all bad

All depends whether retired (rich or poor) or working. Compared to rural Mo. cost of rural land here in SE Tx. is stupid high, utilities way higher, purchases in general are 25% higher, gas and food bout the same. Taxes here are higher. Tags are stupid high as is any cost related to auto titles. Wages here are definitely higher, but I am retired (poor).
People here find abundant work, especially IF they want to drive to Houston. So they are used to paying more for bout everything.
Rural Missouri is a conservative area, there are plenty of people there with $$$$, but even they are slow to threw it away!

Ding, ding, ding!!! Winner.
As a lot of you know, I just returned home to Oklahoma after living in California for 23 years. I worked in the film industry during that time and most of my years there were great.
Great friends, weather, year round drag racing, lots of other stuff to do. Beautiful part of the country.
One of the things that I find a lot of people are overlooking when complaining about people from California moving to their areas is that TONS of people are STILL flocking TO California.
And yes, I realize more are leaving than are coming in but there is still a huge amount of people migrating to California. It seemed like more than half the people on the film sets I worked on were from some other state and came there for work. Same can be said for the tech industry.
So while some of us may be annoyed with Californians invading their state, you have to realize that your state is exporting some folks to California as well.
And don't get me wrong, I am not defending California for its serious problems, I just wanted to chime in.
That being said, for me, moving back to rural Oklahoma was the best decision I've made in a long time. I miss my friends in California but am making new ones here and am not missing the:
gas prices
traffic
politicians
taxes
real estate prices
crowds
crime, etc. lol.
As I got older and got married, bought a house, etc. it just became too ridiculous for me, but to each his own. Some people love it there and I say good for them. Ill take the sticks of Delaware County Oklahoma though.....

This state has become a festering asshole with delusional people in charge.

Hmm.....Tennessee....

Sales Tax: 7% state levy. Localities can add up to 2.75%, with an average combined rate of 9.53%, according to the Tax Foundation. Groceries are taxed at 4% by the state, plus whatever local rate is in effect. Local taxes are limited, though: Only the first $1,600 of any item is taxable.

Income Tax Range: There's no state income tax, so salaries, wages, Social Security benefits, IRA distributions and pension income are not taxed. But Tennessee does have the Hall Tax, which taxes dividends and some interest at 2% for 2019. The first $1,250 in taxable income for individuals ($2,500 for joint filers) is exempt. The rate will drop to 1% in 2020, and then it will be phased out entirely after 2020.

Property Taxes: The median property tax rate for Tennessee homeowners is $727 per $100,000 of assessed home value.

Inheritance and Estate Taxes: There is no inheritance tax or estate tax.

For details on tax breaks for retirees and state taxes on other retirement income, see the complete guide to taxes on retirees in Tennessee.

Just closed on our house in Prescott Valley Arizona. About 6 more months before we get out of this **** state of Illinois!

As this world continues to get more screwed up, looking for the "right"place to live might take on more importance. Makaes a difference if some mob wants to burn and kill or just peacefully protest?
Take Houston for example. The recent BS about the Floyd character, NO riots in Houston, just peaceful protests and a week long fneral for their hero. LOL again..but it is a huge city I even hate small cities and the surronding populated areas, just bedroom communities, city chits living a little further out. Sorry If I call anyone chits!! LOL
IF KernDog hates humidity pay attention to how the humidity flows out of the gulf and where the wind actually blows!!!
Home is where the heart is ...or if not retired where you make the $$$$$$. There has always been places I would never consider living as $$ would not be as important as my sanity. People retire to where they WANT to live, not where they think they have to live.
Some people will never live more than 10mi from where they were raised. It is home no matter how crappy.
I sold what I had and moved my family in '79 at age 31, from S W Ga to Missouri. I had no jo to go to , but I had just bought 40 ac of pasture with a very old and pitiful farmhouse. I paid $26000 cash had $1000 left over 1 stud and 5 broodmares. I was young, maybe young and dumb, but I would do it all over again. Grit. Lived in Missouri for 37 years before I found my Texas wife that refuses to leave. ha

Each state has it's pro's and con's. You can't get away from taxes in one form or another and if you do, some service is usually missing. I have been to many states and I'm always happy to come home, Missouri!!

A view from my garage...

I can relate brother, California's "sunshine tax" is ridiculous. I left way back in 06 and haven't regretted it once. I do miss my yearly tee time at Torrey Pines though but we have courses up here in Utah that kinda makes you forget about all that (and green fees are better than half the price of Cali. courses) If you like to snow ski well this place has the greatest snow on earth. Snow so powdery that you can't even make a snow ball with it. That picture is of the canyon that gets you up to Snow Bird, about 30 minutes from the house.
Lived in Texas, California, New Mexico and now Utah. Moving ain't bad except for the moving part...lol
You never really appreciate how much stuff you have until you gotta move it.
I'm liking life in the Rockies, 4 seasons (more or less) although cost of living isn't California crazy but it's slowly getting there. All in all there are places to go where you don't have to work 2 jobs just to stay in the middle of the road like you do there.. Good luck KD you'll never miss it when you do leave.

About 80% of the people I talk to in our area of Prescott Valley are Cali refugees !
And some from Washington state. Very few from up north here.

Also talked to a few people from Phoenix area to get away from the heat.

When are you going to move?
It will be at least a year. After I officially retire, there is a list of home improvement jobs that I have to do to get top dollar for this place.

Good for you, alsant! My buddy from HS recently fled CA for AZ.

Some service is missing....
Well, I don't need an illegal immigrant legal defense fund.
I don't need a sidewalk feces cleanup crew.
I have no use for a drug needle exchange program.
I just need good roads, fair politics, police and fire response.

VERmont. The taxes may be high but the roads are great, the taxes keep out the riff raff, there's NO billboards, no sprawl, lots of little quiet towns, spectacular scenery, tons of things to do and see and people up here leave you the hell alone, and expect you to leave them alone. Your expected to fend for yourself, not cry to the city/county/state or Federal government every time you stub yer toe. If you need help, you can get help. If you want to help, you can, there's no church breathing down yer neck for money. Majority of Vermont is working farm land in and amongst mountains and rolling hills. The state is divided right up the middle by the Green Mountains. Lake Champlain empties South through the Champlain valley on the West side of the Greens with the Adirondacks on the other side of the valley. The East side of the Greens is more rocky and hilly with rec places like STOWE mountain ski area etc. Want quiet and peace, in a state that is second only to Montana in the lowest black population, then come on up. Republican governor.
