Who has MOVED from their home state ? How difficult was it for you?

I was actually signed up to be an Airborne "Cannon Crewman" but was discharged before going to jump school in Ft Benning GA. Problems with My ears.....Medical disability discharge.

Bummer. You may have noticed Iwear hearing aids. Being around too many things that went boom. They probably saved you from being completely deaf

The Wife and I are still thinking about moving. A FBBO member wrote this:

"Just pulled the trigger on a place in Oklahoma. I think you will find some of the best overall values there. Winters ave daytime temp 50+ and no snow. Looked all over the mid south from Tennessee to east Texas. Figured no state income tax wouldn't be as important as low property taxes in our retirement years. VERY, VERY rural but I wouldn't rule out southeastern OK in your search."

I did not think of Oklahoma but I will. I was there in the Army in 1984. Fort Sill, Lawton OK. The army base did have a lot of trees. Trees and hills are important to me, I like that.
Come on out to Oklahoma KD. We'll be out there in the fall. It's pretty amazing how much house you can get for your money.

You would probably be happy in the Phoenix area . With your skills you will find employment . As I said earlier Arizona is slowly becoming eastern California , but it's still gun friendly and somewhat lower cost of living. Taxes keep increasing and quality of life is slowly decreasing here.
Not exactly "selling me" on AZ here...

The Wife has pulled up some ads of different properties in Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas. It is amazing what can be bought with California money. We are just a regular dual income couple without kids but we could greatly improve our standard of living by cashing out and moving.

That is ME in the blue robe.

This is NOT me but I appreciate the sentiment!

Not much different for me, moving from New York to New Jersey. Same dumbasses here as there were over there.

I'm still pondering these thoughts....
Today I got a email from a Mopar friend that used to live near me in Sacramento. He moved to Bandera, Texas several years ago and loves it there. He left CA because he wanted to live in a red state with traditional Country and religious values. He didn't say what he paid for his 5 acre spread. I've looked at properties online though. His place is in what Texans call their "Hill Country". The weather looks similar to here with higher humidity at times.
This whole thing remains both interesting and a bit scary! I've spent 96% of my life here!

Every California native friend that I have says they'd go in a heartbeat if they could. The all say how far downhill our state has gone. I tend to agree. I liked it a lot more 22 years ago than I do now.
And I don't want to sound like a California basher. Some great people here. Great weather, car culture, etc. I just can't take another minute of the traffic, crowds and expense.

Traffic and expense....
I've been working a job 107 miles from home. In the morning I can make it there in 1:30 to 1:40 minutes. Sounds like a lot but I've done worse. The afternoon drive home has been horrible though...Averaging 3 hours or more each day. Imagine spending 8 hours working and 5 hours commuting each day. THAT will motivate a man to look to a place more rural.

Agreed. We had the 12” Zenith B & W that I watched Twillight Zone on.

There’s no way I’d put up with that commute! I’m 5 minutes from the office and 4 hours from the furthest destination in my territory. Only go there a handful of times a year. We’re looking at warmer destinations. The only opportunities so far look to be in Mesa, AZ. Weather seems great there but I bet the cost of living is high. Oklahoma would be great but not sure I can find work there.

Stay away from my part of Pa.
  • Property taxes nearing levels of NY/NJ because most of them peckerheads brought all the crap with them, and "we needed to improve". How did we ever get along without such superior guidance?
  • Goofball Govenor [D] re-elected and will add another 8 cents per gallon to the highest fuel tax in the nation.
  • This week's low temp forecast is -11. We definitely have 4 seasons here. It is rarely warm and dry though.
Not all bad though, some of the best forests are in Pa. Heck, the name translates to " Penns Woods "

I think the key is developing passive income streams and living anywhere you like. Wish I was smart enough to do that!

FYI north and south Dakota have the least number of Californians relocating. If your looking for good political climate and minimal tax increases give those states a look.

"Stay away from my part of Pa."

Sorry, but don't mean to insult NY/NJ residents at all. My part of the state is being inundated by a mindset that ruins our sleepy little towns that attracts them in the first place. Our property taxes have quadrupled in 15 years, it's sad to say that government workers are the largest employers in most counties (dairy farms used to be).
It's called urban creep, and starts with the suburbs.
It is still beautiful here, but like KD, I don't know if I can afford to retire here.
Maybe I'll move next to Ghost, or MoparedTN,- they won't mind if I rattle off a few 308 rounds.

No snow for me.
Well, maybe a little but I do not like dealing with weather below 30 degrees. I can do it, I just don't like it. Some claim that you just bundle up and you will be fine. I just don't like wearing a lot of clothes, small cars, small rooms, etc. I feel closed in and it makes me very angry.

Holy Crap - that's too much of your life spent in traffic! You'll hate me, but here's my commute routine. I live 2 minutes drive from work. My daily driver is my Cummins powered Ram. I have to take a long round about drive for 15-20 minutes to get the engine up to operating temp and charge up the batteries to take good care of the truck. I put a high idle kit on it awhile back so now I can just crank up the idle in my driveway or the parking lot at work before I drive it home.

I hold no ill will. Construction is a moving target, the location always changes. The Bay area is where the bigger money is so that is where many companies compete for the work. I've been lucky the past two years because I've worked 4 sites within an hour.
