Stay away from my part of Pa.

• Property taxes nearing levels of NY/NJ because most of them peckerheads brought all the crap with them, and "we needed to improve". How did we ever get along without such superior guidance?
• Goofball Govenor [D] re-elected and will add another 8 cents per gallon to the highest fuel tax in the nation.
• This week's low temp forecast is -11. We definitely have 4 seasons here. It is rarely warm and dry though.

Not all bad though, some of the best forests are in Pa. Heck, the name translates to " Penns Woods "

Sorry, but don't mean to insult NY/NJ residents at all. My part of the state is being inundated by a mindset that ruins our sleepy little towns that attracts them in the first place. Our property taxes have quadrupled in 15 years, it's sad to say that government workers are the largest employers in most counties (dairy farms used to be).
It's called urban creep, and starts with the suburbs.
It is still beautiful here, but like KD, I don't know if I can afford to retire here.
Maybe I'll move next to Ghost, or MoparedTN,- they won't mind if I rattle off a few 308 rounds.

I moved from Maryland to Pa. just to downsize from my last place. I didn't want to move to Pa. but I made a low ball offer on this place and they accepted. I'm calling it a temporary investment.

Man I really hate this liberal state and all the high taxes that you don't even see what they go towards. Hanover Borough just came up with a storm water tax and they are attaching it to the already outrageous water bill. Being on a fixed income like the rest of these residents isn't making it easy to survive.

I have my sites set on a different county other than this York county or moving South, Tennessee or the Carolinas.

Ive been coming to your area all my life. Parents, relatives lived there, grandparents. Aunt had a nice place in Mountain Home, uncle lived in Buck Hills. I remember the drive there in my grandfathers 52 Buick. It took hours. Its not the same anymore, still nice parts but its changed. Drugs and Section8. My sister in law presently lives in Pocono country place. When she bought the place it was really nice. Now? Need I say any more

I moved for work from my hometown of Minneapolis to Chicago - hated it mostly because if I couldn’t stay in the twin cities I wanted out of the Midwest to experience something totally different. I was just coming off of a corporate training program and didn’t have a choice. That was the deal when I took the job. Well I was only in Chitown for about 6 months when they asked me if I would be interested in moving to Colorado - HUGE YES! Lived there for nine years and loved every minute of it. Weather, hunting, fishing, people, cost of living - the whole nine yards. Would have never moved to xcept the company I was with shut down the division I was in and the choices became move to the east coast or the west coast - or back to Chicago. A lot of soul searching went into that whole process. Opted for CA. Still here 28 years later. Retired now and I remarried 14 years ago. The wife’s whole family immigrated here from Asia because we were here. I’d love to go back to CO but if I did it would be alone - she’s not moving. There are many things about CA I don’t like and have never liked. But I’m stuck. I love the lifestyle in CO and don’t like it in CA. But I’ve relearning to relike it because of don’t have a choice. KD if I were you I’d go to one of the Rocky Mountain states and love it all the way.

If I wasn't 65 years old already I would seriously consider moving to Texas. Been there many times but just last month the wife and I drove through the south western part of Texas...a HHUUUUGGGGEEEE state by he way........It was "hilly" and to me, resembled what Mike67 says is East Texas "hill country". Not nuch grass but miles and miles of what we would call Valley oak trees. Massive groves of them as far as the eye could see with wildlife all over the place. I saw so many deer just off the road in these "forests". We went to Austin for a gig the wife went to. Austin was nice but close in was VERY congested. I spent several temporary stays in Texas while in the Air Force in San Antonio and Wichita Falls (north part) and have been there in all seasons. The weather can be volatile at times but like you, being used to our awesome weather, I could get used to it just fine. I like the general atmosphere in rural Texas. Even the big cities are ok, just too crowded. The people were always great in my experience too.
Don't count Texas out until you visit!

A buddy of mine moved to Bandera. He emails me often, asking me to visit. I recently told him that I have been thinking of moving. He started in about how much he loves it there....then some of the emails had a few red flags. He wrote about how the state is slowly turning BLUE, how the lakes and rivers often have tweekers and bums living and camping nearby year round and how Austin has changed.

How’s Houston or Corpus Christi?

Houston has been turning blue for years now.....plus it's a major go to city for people from all over the world. I live in a burb about 30 minutes from downtown that's a blue collar area but it's getting crowded. Don't know much about Corpus....

Texas doesn't have an income tax but has a sales tax and varies a bit depending on the city you live in. Combined state/city sales tax for where I live is 8 1/4%.

Corpus is OK from what I can see. Houston suburbs are pretty nice. I'm just not crazy about the humidity.
Fourty years ago Austin was a really nice place. I don't think there are any true Austinites left. Only weird lgbtqxx....or whatever the hell they call themselves nowadays.
And Dallas, with it's Democratic leadership, sanctuary policies and leftist foreign influence is following in Austin's footsteps.
I'll never understand why people piss and moan about one place and then try to change the new place into what they just left!

Not to mention the crime. Don't think the % rate is going up but there's just so many more people here now. Use to be that there was always 2 or 3 vehicles in my driveway whether or not anyone was home but nowadays, they don't care. Now there's nothing in the driveway so no one knows if I'm here or not.

I know very little about Texas except that I LOVE the independent spirit.
We looked at Zillow real estate listings of properties in Texas over the weekend. It was not so good. I did see some areas of green but too many lacked trees. I didn't like the houses we saw either. I don't want to mention specifics for fear of offending members here that may like the types of places that we do not. We obviously are not ready to move today, it was just an exercise in what can be bought for certain amounts of money. The properties in Tennessee though.....Holeeeee Crap, there were some impressive places there!

Sounds like you guys are really serious about bolting when the time is right. I may have mentioned it earlier - not sure. But pretty my 90% of the people I know in the Golden State want to leave. The cost, taxes, liberal politics and congestion has made most of my friends fed up and ready to leave. I’m stuck becuase of my marriage and her family but if not for that I would be gone too. For all those same reasons including culture. I have to suck it up and not complain cause it doesn’t do any good. I have to make the best of it. I would plant in a Rocky Mountain State. Probably CO. Good luck in your hunt for the right place.

Our other area to consider was the Phoenix/Mesa area. The climate seems an improvement over the midwest but it seems to be another haven for the libtarted escaping CA. The COL seems to have skyrocketed there and they also have a fairly high income tax rate.
