Youngsters know nothing about push starts?

If the battery is stone dead can a newer fuel injected vehicle even be push started?Guessing not.

no...still takes power to fire the injectors and run the ECU....most will shut down at 9v or less....if you can get it started, and providing the alt is working, it will run off the alternator.

No doubt, it's up to the parents, as is most things in life that young people should know. I made sure my son AND daughter both knew how to drive a stick. It was a very easy choice for them. They could drive a 1990 Volvo 240, 4 cylinder, 5 speed or, they could walk !!!!! The second two things I taught both of them after the basics of shifting was 1) how to slip the clutch on a hill so you don't roll back into the car stopped behind you and 2) how to push start the car if the battery died. Funny thing is it took my daughter about a half hour to learn it all. My son was still stalling the car on the second day. They both thank me all the time for "forcing" them to drive stick.

Like all problems with young people you have to blame the parents. My daughter 23 and son 21, both know how to push start cars trucks and motorcycles. BTW my daughter's kitty is named Mopar. For Christmas she gave my son and me Mopar tin signs. My son bought 2 projects home for the Christmas college break. A 1984 Celica GTS $400 and a 1988 Supra Turbo $1300. Why, because he wants to go fast and 4th gen Z28's are still too expensive for him. He loves to work on cars and thinks an ME degree can get him the cars he wants. Right now we have more cars than good batteries. He always switching batteries from one car to another.

I've started my 1997 Camaro SS with a roll start.

Mmmmmmmmm, supra. '88 is too old for my liking (no 2jz-gte) but I guess the 7mgte is ok. Re-torque the head to about 90lbs, the factory torque specs are way off and your son will go through headgaskets like crazy if you don't.

Push starting is something people should know how and when to do. However, there isnt many stick shift cars left, and even if it is a stick sometimes you cant push start it due to the clutch safery switch.

But worse yet, some kids dont know how to change a tire! or jump a car!!!

73 340 4spd Duster. I remember having to push start that a few times. Unfortunately for my friends, I was driving and there was more than a couple of times the car got moving and my friends were on the street rolling behind me. I think you were able to push start earlier automatics too. I think they had two pumps that made this possible. Am I right about that?

kids don't even want a stick shift car anymore. they are more work than they are used to

I think it was the pre-66 TorqueFlites.

Stick shifts are good theft prevention. When I taught my kids to drive a stick, I always made them learn how to pop the clutch to start, even in reverse. Taught them that if they knew how that worked, then they would be behind the wheel, not the bumper, with there friends pushing. A lot of parking lots have enough slope to get going.

Sadly I'm not surprised by this post.. I've had to teach my friends how to push start a car, and one time had to help one of them change a tire because they were trying to mount the spare backwards. I'm 21 and I gotta say most people my age probably don't even know how to change their oil.

And my Charger's an automatic for the time being while I finish restoring it, but the first major upgrade I plan on doing is a Passon 5 speed. I miss bangin gears!

Most of the kids think my car is an automatic, because there is no floor shifter, and they've never seen a 3 on the tree car . . . times have changed.

I had 64 & 65 Rambler Ambassadors and I could pop start each one of them even though they were auto transmissions when I had dead batteries. My friends would tell me I was lying when I told them I could pop start them, even made a few $ on bets that it could be done. Those were the good old days.

My 70 Saty ragtop was 3 on the tree. Loved that car !!!!

Yea, you could push start some of the old automatic cars with another vehicle but you had to get up around 30-35 mph for the trans to build up enough fluid pressure to turn over the engine. As you can imagine, this could be very dangerous. It's funny that they actually put instructions in the owners manual about push starting this way.

We had a old 1959 Dodge SW automatic that would not start at -35F so we towed it at about 35 MPH and she started

My two girl had to know how to change a tire and learned on a club cab long box 2500 with 4 speed so they could drive anything
and both carry and know how to use booster cables and roll start cars

No, no they cannot..... no juice to fire the injectors/run the fuel pump = no go.. tried push starting the wife's VW beetle w/ a dead battery and it wouldn't have it

I can remember shutting of my `72 Dodge pickup (360/ 727) while going down the hi-way and simply turning the key back to the on position and it would fire right off.

I don't know if the young man's Miata battery was completely drained, but the starter wouldn't so much as click when he hit the key. I believe it was a `95, and it lit right off when he popped the clutch in 2nd gear.

First car I ever drove on the street was a 68 dart 3 on the tree. I was a natural.

When I was in the Air Force our ramp truck was a Dodge 1/2 ton, slant6 with a three on the tree. The first week of driving it I broke the shift handle off the column trying to get some second gear rubber. Let's say I wasn't real popular at the motor pool.

Proof! A young motor head will try and get rubber in ANYTHING!!! Lol

I agree with you Hemi Rebel . . . I don't see the difficulty, and boy is it a load of fun to drive ! !

I'm enjoying it now on my Shoe Box while I'm rebuilding my Belvedere, but then the 3 on the tree goes to 5 on the floor ! ! ! ( maybe 6 on the floor ? ? )
