1968 Plymouth GTX

Stripes from the factory where blue. I am leaning toward white.
Blue stripes are rare, but white over QQ1...oh man. My knees get weak. :p

I’d be really tempted to mock up something in blue that is close to the color, then see what you think. I personally like white and blue but the blue stripes really sound interesting. Nice work! It’s really coming along well!

Trying to find the original blue stripe color online is challenging. Partly because the remnants of the last stripes on the car may be severely faded:

I'm not the greatest welder but I try.

They did the same thing on my rag top, I couldn’t believe the radio shop up the road did that and then covered it up with the door cards, and of course a nice set of rear interior panels got hacked too... you will have a beautiful car when done!

This is the horn button that came with the car:

It appears they were only in a limited number of GTXs as most I see are the larger vinyl buttons.
I have searched for a reproduction but none seem to match this look.
They are nearly all black like the one below, plus these have a side tab which mine doesn't:

Anybody make an accurate reproduction of my button?

Tell ya the truth, I don't think I've ever seen that button. Could it be left over from the 67 year? Maybe from the "finger cutter" recall steering wheel? IDK, just spitballing here...

I did a search for 1968 Plymouth GTX then browsed through the pictures. This was one of two pictures I found with the same horn button. The other picture was in a weird format that I couldn't save on my computer.

I took the horn button apart today to see what I am dealing with.
First, I had to grind off the retainer heads:

Next I gently pried the metal off.

The areas that looked black turned out to be clear. The chrome paint and grey backing material had flaked off in those spots.

I tried buffing the surface to see if I could remove some of the scratches. Turned out most were way too deep.

The problem with trying to mold a new one, is all the slotted indentations. That and trying to find a true Chrome paint to fill them with.

My '67 Valiant had the identical style, it was upgraded with a 200 series decor package in some areas. Perhaps someone doing a build from a preserved old lady car might have one that would work.

I have a February '68 issue of Car Life that featured a comparison between the Hemi convertible which was also a pace car, and a 440 hardtop. The hardtop had the same horn ring, and also had the speedometer with the three digit numerals.

I believe that this one is original to my 1968 Sport Satellite.

Found a decent horn button on eBay and grabbed it up for $30.

Looks like it should buff up pretty decent.

Got the driver's door painted and 3 coats of clear applied. Sitting in the sunshine to help cure the clear:
