63 Only

okay that's a crager intake with a 671 , twin fours and four webers on a twin fours offy , and the b block six pack . my 65 880 rag would run to 6k in second gear at 120 mph with that twin fours on my 130k lower end n 2.76 in the butt . the 671 is a hotrod motor with lp carbs and the sixpack is a barry grant setup for a 65 bel rag driver .

And much as I like GTO's - some say the first muscle car was the '64 GTO? A big engine stuffed in a mid-size car? Hmm, a 426 dual quad motor - in 1963?

First "muscle car"? Biggest, most powerful engine, with multiple carbs, stuffed in the lightest body?

1938 Buick Century. Multi carb roadmaster engine. 1957 Rambler Rebel also fits, except for multiple carbs. Fastest 1957 four door sedan. Or two door. (Only the feulie corvette was faster).

In February 1963 they announced the lightweight option. You could walk into your friendly neighborhood Plymouth or Dodge dealer and order a 3200 pound car with 425 horsepower and the salesman would say “thank you for your deposit, see you in six weeks”! The sales bulletin said they wanted the dealer to sell the cars to “Qualified Buyers” which, to the Factory, meant racers but to the dealer it meant whoever had the money! The steel Max Wedge cars were built on the regular assembly line but the lightweight cars were assembled on the weekends. Legend has it that the Marine Division built the engines and sent them to assemble as needed. Battery in the trunk for all max wedges was announced the same time the lightweight option was. I know of a car that was built the second week of March with the battery in the front, my car was built 4/19 with the battery in the trunk.

Probably just me, but I like the red one on the bottom. I was over wheelcovers and whitewalls fifty years ago, and a maxwedge car with those bicycle tires on the back just don't get it done.
That red '63 just looks mean! Nothing says, "Race me, I dare you." , like a '63 Dodge.

Max doesn't look like that anymore! A friend's Max looked like that. He told me that he punched it in Drive at about 70 and broke the tires loose!
