Hey guys,
Looking for some advice. Was warming up my 65 coronet yesterday to charge the battery and when I came out to check on it there was steam spraying out of one spot on the radiator and the temp gauge was on the hot side. Assuming I have to replace the radiator and most likely the thermostat. Any other suggestions? Is it worth trying a bar leaks radiator sealer?

If the leak is in the tank, solder it. How old is the radiator? If the radiator is old I'd have it re-cored. In most cases just getting hot shouldn't cause a good radiator to fail.

Rick,
How would I know if the leak is in the tank? Fill with water and see if it leaks out from where I saw it leaking from last night?

take it to a radiator shop. they can find the leaks and repair or replace whats needed.

Bar's Leak is merely a "Fix A Flat" to get you home. I know some that have used it for years on old winter beaters, but I wouldn't pour it in my classic ride. :eusa_hand:

Thanks guys, I dropped it off at a radiator shop and I should have it back this week. I'll keep you posted. While i have the radiator out I figured I should check out the water pump and make sure it was in good shape. I have a pic and want to know if you guys think I should replace or just put on a new gasket.

trying to figure out how to post pics.....i've done it before..haha.

Since you asked...Now is the time to replace the pump, hoses (both radiator and heater), clamps, thermostat and coolant. Might even consider doing a flush of the system. Also, my preference is to buy the preformed hoses verses the 'universal' corrugated ones. If you do, make sure to add a spring inside the bottom hose. Have fun...

ColoradoDave, where can you find the preformed houses and heater houses? I looked at classic and didn't see any on there for a 65 with a 273. I'd prefer to do it all. Thermostat is already done, I ordered the water pump and hope to find the houses by this weekend.

Hi,
Sorry to take so long to get back. If you want to order them online go to rockauto.com
Upper preformed hose: GATES #21794 $6.91
Lower preformed hose: GATES #20386 $9.91

Otherwise, go to your local NAPA store. If they don't have them they certainly can get them in a day or two. Same for the internal anti-collapse spring for the bottom hose. NAPA or any Ford dealer. Your lower hose is 1 1/2" inside diameter. Another way is to make your own spring. Go to NAPA or any hard parts house and buy a stick of 3/32" stainless steel welding rod. Wind it around a 1 1/4" dowel or flashlight handle or something similar and then insert it into the lower hose. Thanks for the tip Zack (5.7hemi). Good luck to you.
BTW, NAPA should be your first 'go to' parts house. They will surprise you with what they can get for your car. Look for the 'old' guys...lol
