'69 charger r/t-se: Building my dream car

Hey Speedy - great job on the roof with the dyna-mat . . . The same company makes another product called dyna-liner, and it comes in 1/8", 1/4", and 1/2" thicknesses . . . it's also a sound barrier and a heat barrier, but it's a bunch lighter in weight. This stuff really works well too.

Here's how it looks installed in my 1966 Shoe-Box

View attachment 176806

It can actually work with dyna-liner and can be installed over top of it for additional heat/sound barrier improvements . . .

I think I installed the 1/4" stuff and I love it . . . I've got dyna-mat on the floor of the entire car - GREAT STUFF ! !

Just a heads up to the group in case someone want to check out another great product for cars . . .

That is some good looking work and ill bet it makes one BIG difference!

Great to see all your hard work paying off so nicely. Heck of a feeling when something comes out so nice and you can stand back thinking "I did that". It isn't a matter of going to UTI or having 30 years of working in a resto shop under your belt....It's about having the mindset that if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Keep up the good work!

Man Speedy, you have done a superb jon on this restoration. I really enjoy seeing all the work you do and inspires me to keep working on my old bird. I wish I had more input but I am learning so much from what you are doing. I really enjoy seeing the emails pop up everynight saying there is an update to your subscription. If i had more confidence in my wokr, I might have actually started a resto thread.

Wow thanks for all the compliments guys, feels great to be back at it and seeing progress made. I'm currently doing brain surgery backmasking my grille center section to paint the silver edge around the finned section. I tried this on one of the headlight doors a while back but had weird issues with the paint not wanting to stick, 2 failed attempts and a lot of wasted time probably had a bit to do with me stepping away from that project for a bit. But I gave it another shot last weekend with way better results: one wet coat of SEM adhesion promoter and probably 5 ish really light coats of silver with the door sitting out in the sun warming up, came out awesome

I also finished up the seam sealer on the interior and turned some attention to my brake calipers. I painted them a while back with the red duplicolor caliper paint but just wasn't feeling it. There's nothing else on the car that will be very flashy so I did some hunting around and found this VHT Engine Metallics high temp "black pearl," more of a dark gunmetal gray with a lot of metallic. It dried a little too flat for me though so I tried VHT's satin clear but that turned out to be more of a flat as well, so tonight I'll give some Duplicolor high temp clear a shot and see how I like it

This is best pic I could get of the "Black Pearl" with some quick krylon gloss clear thrown on it just as a test, think I'm liking it way more than the red

So I'll be working on finishing the last bit of painting on the grille and calipers, and supposedly my headliner should be here tomorrow so I'll have a bit of work coming up to get ready for that install. Definitely keeping busy haha

Great work as always Speedy. I hate it when you take a break too, but needs must lol. I am polishing trim at the moment so I know how that feels haha.
Thanks man, it feels good to be back haha and good luck with the trim! I was about to go off the reservation trying to get all that stuff straightened out and polished lol
Great job Speedy, your trim looks better than new. When you get around to sealing the drip rail there's a little trick I picked up, Acetone and a small soft brush works great to really smooth out the seam sealer. Keep on pluggin
Thanks for the tip Devin! I'll have to give that a try when I do my doorjambs
Nice progress Speedy. After all the hours spent welding in new metal and filling any imperfections with filler, I thought it was kind of cool to be able to just slop in the seam sealer and not have to worry about messing something up.
Thanks elk! But damn now you just reminded me of the lifetime of block-sanding in my near future.. :upside down:

Oh yeah I saw that stuff advertised on the little flyer in the box of dynamat I bought, good to know it works good and thanks for posting that! I was kinda worried this Xtreme stuff would be really heavy but it's not bad at all, could probably more than make up the weight difference switching to an aluminum water pump housing haha

Hey thanks Prop and that's for sure it definitely is one hell of a feeling, can't even imagine what it'll be like to lay my first black stripes down the road haha

Thanks man! I'm always glad to help anyone whenever I can, and that's awesome to hear! And I say start a buildthread anyway! I really didn't have much experience or knowledge at all when
I started this project but the thread has been a huge help with people posting encouragement, advice, or helping out whenever I hit a roadblock. I've been pretty much flying blind learning as I go, and we're all just here to help each other get our mopars back on the road

I'm looking forward to seeing what you choose and seeing the finial results on the brakes .. both colors look good to me. And that grill piece looks like show quality to me !!!

Great update man. Grill looks great! as do the brakes. I need to go back and paint mine too.

Speed your job came out real good on your grill parts, that sun and the heat helped you out pretty good man, everything looks great but these Charger grills you and so many are doing, its cool as it gets watching them turn out, to me looking at them better then new, yea im about that old and no i cant remember lol but with the newer paints and knowledge, it wouldn't surprise me as beautiful as they look!!

Well the center section is finally all backmasked ready to lay down some silver. Just gotta finish up taping the other headlight door and knock it all out. More slow tedious work out of the way with a little more to go haha

Also got my order from Classic, everything looks awesome! Headliner, package tray, windshield gasket and moulding clips, and a couple of this bad@ss sticker haha

20140326_161405.jpg

Unpacked the headliner and laid it out to start regaining it's shape. Soon as this this grille is back together I'll be going to work on the doorjambs and jambing the rear window shelf (like I did with the front) before Operation Headliner. Busy weekend ahead of me!

Agreed on the VHT Engine Metallics.... Really prefer it to the red
Thanks goon, and yeah maybe if they were some crazy 6 piston viper calipers I'd leave them red but I think these ones will come out pretty cool if I can get the clear right

Thanks man! Good to hear after all the hours that went into this grille, starting to feel like I'm repainting the Mona Lisa here haha
Great update man. Grill looks great! as do the brakes. I need to go back and paint mine too.
Thanks reboot, and just make sure they're really good and clean/degreased before painting. Even if they're new/refurb'd in the box like mine there's a chance they'll still be oily as all hell haha

Man, if it was a stock style '68/9 Charger hood I'd be all over it! I'm hoping I can pick up a fiberglass one second-hand cheaper than new. And yeah he might I'll give him a call today and pass the message along!

Thanks Ron! And I think you're right the warm weather and baking in the sun probably helped out a lot. Things have cooled back down to the 50's with rain and no end in sight so I might have to crank the heater in the shop and cook these last couple pieces in front of a spotlight or something first :thinker: keeping my fingers crossed! lol

You'll get it, the heat will surely help, And by the looks of things you do have a busy couple days coming up, Good luck with it all and i hope the headliner comes out real good, i get a bit jittery when it comes to putting them in but its all part of the process!

Caliper looks awesome, i might go that route as well. Cars coming along quickly, im sure i speak for many when i say, "i envy you".

Your moving right along, calipers, grill and everything else is looking great as usual.:wtg:

Thanks guys! I am a little nervous about the headliner but I think I've read so many threads and seen so many pics and videos that I'm probably about as prepared as I can get without actually getting into it yet. I'll make sure I take a bunch of pics either way it goes haha :icon_thumleft:

And I finally got word from my buddy Mike, looks like I'll be helping him put the dana 60 back under his hemi Roadrunner in the morning

Then back to work on Frankenstein and hopefully get it running better with Mike on Sunday. Looks like a pretty fun weekend incoming, I'll check back in tomorrow

Hey Speedy quick question for ya? How much Dynamat did you end up using on your car? And where all did you apply it? Looking to order some for my car and really not sure how much I'll need. Pretty sure Im gonna do roof, floor, truck and doors.

Hey speedy, I'm sure you have mentioned it before but what paint did you use for your grill? Was it SEM? Also what color codes etc for the black and silver?
cheers mate
