69 Coronet 440 project

Some music to battle a quarter skin to.

Well after fighting with the quarter all day I changed things up a bit. I cut out the section that just did not want to cooperate and welded in a new section.

Wah la it's now straight. When I cut this section out the quarter sprung so I obviously welded tension into it and that's probably why it didn't want to cooperate.

little grinding John and it will be as good as the rest! Better now then waiting and finding a problem...

Oh my is that bringing back some bad memories from my hood, weld it in cut it out, weld it in cut it out. Really glad to hear you showed it who the boss was and got it straight.

It's funny but patching in new metal seems to be the answer to most of the problems on Scar.

Thanks 7, Scar won't get the best of me and by the end I'm going to be quite the expert on Coronet restoration lol.

Nice progress man and nice job putting the hammer down on that uncooperative quarter. Looking back I probably should've saved myself some work and done full quarters on my car as well. But oh well, live and learn and like basketcase said if it was easy everyone would be doing it haha
jam on! :headbang:

Right now I'm still going, "Screw it I'll put on a whole quarter, No I'll keep going and fix what I have, Screw it I'm putting on a new quarter, no........". At some point I'll figure out what to do.

Just finished reading this entire thread. All I have to say is WOW!. You are doing one hell of a job on your scar. Keep up the great work and you will be new pappa proud before you know it!

Thanks for the complements jimmyd. Welcome to the board, you have anything you're working on or just looking for inspiration?

Thanks BigBlock61, Actually a little of both. I started a build on a 67' Coronet 440. It is a 318 auto on the column. I've posted a few pics as I'm just starting on it. I'll need inspiration and information as I move forward and I know this is the forum to get it.

Sometimes we can sit back awhile and then things click! I don't think your going to loose on this bud, you have overcome other hurdles so ill bet this one you beat to!

jimmyd Welcome to the Mopar madness!!! I hope you enjoy your 67 build, Its a lot of fun turning these back into the ride we want!

Nice work man! Good job jumping that hurdle. A bit of skim coat, bit of blocking and that headache is long forgotten.

Thanks Ron, I haven't worked on Scar for a few weeks now but that's only because of other responsibilities. Not working on the Coronet has given me a chance to figure out whats going on, and as I see it, I'm going to keep working on that quarter till I get it right or until I can afford a new quarter for it. I'm going to treat it like I did the tail light panel, "I've got nothing to loose by trying to fix it" and if that doesn't work I'll bite the bullet and replace it. This is my first time doing bodywork so I knew going into this, that mistakes would be made, and I could either complain about them or learn from them, and I do love to learn. :) Also with doing the quarter I was getting a little ahead of myself because I wanted to see better progress. With that in mind I'm going back to the floor and finishing what I started there first and then worry about the wheel wells and quarters. It's time to get back on track and get this done.

In between the rain today I did get out to work on Scar. (That name is really growing on me) I went back to finishing the floor pans before I continue on to the next.

I got the patches installed in the underseat pan and the pin holes welded up. Now I can install the left rear footwell. I'll start fitting it in tonight. :)

It's a little bit more than that but thanks Prop.

Like you I had to learn allot while I went since most of my previous repairs were just patching small spots. When I warped my hood I ended up cutting the weld back out to release to stress and then re-welded it being even more careful. The big headache to me is the welds from the MIG are so hard you can't hammer them down to reverse the shrinkage meaning you just have to be really careful and slow and pray you don't warp it to begin with. Good luck

You're pretty picky and do some impressive work so I'm sure you'll get it one way or the other.

Thanks for the kindness and now that you said it, I guess I am sort of picky haha. My biggest problem with welding right now is heat and learning how to slow down. It took me about an hour to weld the top joint on the quarter and it probably should have taken me all day, I've never been one for going slow. The other problem is, I want to make sure I get full penetration on the weld so I hold it a little too long. As you can read, I know what the problem is, I just need to learn how to fix it.

I read that Ace Frehley had a new album out or at least new to me. He covered Steve Millers the Joker and really made it his own, two thumbs up!

Hi all :hatwave: It's been awhile but the internet at my house was down. I finally got the floor and sides blasted. My compressor broke but my sons friend let me borrow his so I could finish up the rear seat area. I also finished welding in the floor. I still have to clean up some of the welds but other than that the floor is behind me. :)

I've been putting off the body work on the quarter cause it's just scary and I really need to get the compressor fixed first. Hopefully there will be more to come soon.

Nice job on the floor 61, little by little it's coming together.

so without being able to waist endless hours on the internet, how come the car isn't done?:grin::grin:
your work looks great!

Come on John, Your doing great man! I don't think i would worry about the quarter panel, looking at everything else! nope, I DO understand the air though, I fight it here all the time and afraid im going to need a new one, mine is super slow anyway but i can deal with that as long as it stays running but its been warning me lol, keep up the great work bud, you'll get it!!!
